  • “Madrid with Syria” awareness day (ARABIC)
Representatives of the organizations Cascos Blancos (White Helmets), Sham el Jair and the Association of Support for the Syrian People (AAPS) gave testimonials on the situation in the country.
Along with Amer Hijazi, president of the AAPS, testimonials were given by Raed Alsaleh, the director of Cascos Blancos; Ahmad Youssef, a volunteer for Cascos Blancos; Halil Resuloglu, president of the Syrian NGO Sham el Jair; Mohamad Alskaf, manager of humanitarian aid for Sham el Jair, and Ignacio Álvarez Ossorio, a professor of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Alicante and the Middle East and Maghreb Coordinator for Fundación Alternativas. The event was presented by Karim Hauser, who is responsible for Governability at Casa Árabe.
The Association of Support for the Syrian People (AAPS) is the only Spanish NGO that sends humanitarian aid on a regular basis to the interior of Syria, and it works with the cooperation of other NGOs and associations in the field so that the sending of humanitarian aid will be effective and reach those who need it most.
Two of these associations are Cascos Blancos (nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016) and Sham El Jair, both formed by Syrian civilians. The people who volunteer for these organizations have been capable of demonstrating society’s humanity in the midst of this cruel conflict. This is why the AAPS would like to help Spanish society hear their testimony, so as to increase the visibility of their work and increase awareness about the situation which the Syrian civilian population is enduring inside the country.

Ministerial Round Table Discussion organized by Casa Árabe and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as part of the FITUR International Tourism Fair of 2017.
In conjunction with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Casa Árabe organized the fifth edition of a ministerial round table discussion on the prospects for tourism in the Middle East and North Africa, within the framework of the FITUR International Tourism Fair of 2017 in Madrid. As in other years, this gathering included the presence of Tourism Ministers from some of the most important countries which receive tourism in the region. The objective of the event is to offer a space for debate to analyze current trends and short-term prospects for tourism in the region within the current scenario of geopolitical upheaval, challenges at different levels in the field of security and persistent uncertainty about the global economic outlook. The round table discussion reviewed the different possible strategies to improve tourism’s resilience against external shocks, speeding up and consolidating the industry’s recovery while strengthening its contribution to economic growth and sustainable, inclusive development in these countries.

  • Gender, minorities and refugees in Iraq (ARABIC)
Pascale Warda, Iraq’s former Minister of Immigration and Refugees, gave this conference in Madrid.
Since the first Gulf War, there have been various waves of refugees and internally displaced persons in Iraq. They now amount to nearly 3.5 million, of which 2.5 million came about in 2014 alone. Iraqi sources estimate that over 4 million people have lost their homes and have become internally displaced, including the unregistered internally displaced. Moreover, since June 2014, thousands of people belonging to minority groups have been murdered, maimed or kidnapped, including an unknown number of women and girls forced into marriage or sexual slavery. These abuses continue and seem to be part of a conscious attempt to eradicate Iraq’s religious and ethnic diversity. These violations are not only being committed by the Jihadists in Daesh.
    Given by:
Pascale Warda, Iraq’s former Minister of Immigration and Refugees. Including the intervention of Ana Gil, a journalist and author of the book “Una rosa en Irak” (“A Rose in Iraq”). The event was presented by Karim Hauser, who is responsible for the Governance Area at Casa Árabe.

Sinceramente, me costó descubrirlo.

  • Humanitarian crisis in the region of Iraqi Kurdistan
The media constantly speak about the operation in Mosul, the war against Daesh (or ISIS, after its acronym in English), but they often leave out the humanitarian consequences. The war has led to the forced displacement of millions of people in Iraq and Syria since 2014. Arab, Christian and Yazidi families have been persecuted, threatened and massacred. Most of those saved have found refuge in the region of Iraqi Kurdistan. There are more than 2 million displaced people, and the number of victims continues to grow each day. The camps are overflowing with people. International humanitarian aid is insufficient and does not even cover the basic needs.
