While a life of adventure has traditionally been reserved for the rich and the sponsored, to the dirtbag, it's a birthright for the masses. Partly a celebration of an underappreciated subculture of hiker trash, ski bums, and vagabonds, and partly a "how to" guide for adventure on the cheap, The Dirtbag's Guide to Life is the first solid attempt to define an outdoor movement that has taken root in backpacker hostels, long trails, and climbing crags around the world.
Distilling personal wisdom and practical lessons from dozens of the world’s most dedicated dirtbags, Boldly Went's first print publication is for anyone who dreams of hitchhiking trips through Patagonia and summers spent trail running in Montana, but who can’t be bothered by mainstream frivolities like expensive clothes and basic hygiene.
The guide confronts some of the biggest personal and practical problems for people living the dirtbag dream - financing adventure, building a career path that is flexible enough to accommodate your passions, navigating challenges with relationships and responsibilities, and maintaining a sense of meaning when you decide to center your existence on life outside. In the process, it gets to the heart of why outdoor culture matters as a way of life that rebuilds a sense of humanity and connection in an increasingly fractured and technologized world.

Emory Wanger is the host of The By Land Podcast. I found his podcast from an article in the Washington Trails Magazine - https://www.wta.org/news/magazine/features/outdoor-podcasts-to-inspire
Emory grew up day hiking with his dad, who ran a kids camp and he was therefor always outside. One of there horse rides as a youth, he crossed paths with some folks who were thru hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. He has since hiked the entire trail.
After he exited his career in the military, he dedicated some time helping soldiers find the outdoors. This same program was eventually the catalyst to his own thru hike.
His podcast came after his PCT hike and is a blend of hiking, outdoors and hunting. I hesitate to label his show because one just never knows what amazing guest Emory will have on next!
We talk about some episodes of his show-
Episode 46 Running 500 Miles In 10 Days With Christof Teuscher- https://byland.co/podcast/episode-46-running-500-miles-in-10-days-with-christof-teuscher
Episode 62 Thru Riding With Gillian Larson- https://byland.co/podcast/2017/12/5/ti0wu5t37kf1vt3wqlk1oqd8n48yvf-nn9ph
Emory is married and they now have a baby girl! They have decided to make the outdoors a part of their family no matter what season it is. He talks about exposing her to all the elements so that she will be used to it. One of his episodes was about hiking with kids to prep for his coming child, learning through his guests on the how to’s- https://byland.co/podcast/episode-50-one-family-6-kids-and-2000-miles
His podcast with John Z was the episode Emory said he learned some things from the most. Here is the episode- https://byland.co/podcast/episode-25-how-to-hike-50-miles-in-a-day-with-john-z

Heather holds the overall self-supported Fastest Known Time (FKTs) on the Pacific Crest Trail (2013) hiking it in 60 days, 17 hours, 12 minutes, breaking the previous men’s record by four days and becoming the first woman to hold the overall record.
Her book Thirst, is all about this feat! We talk about some of the events she wrote, leaving much to be read by you.
She also holds the women’s self-supported FKTs on the Appalachian Trail (2015) with a time of 54 days, 7 hours, 48 minutes and the Arizona Trail (2016), which she completed in 19 days, 17 hours, 9 minutes.
We talk about her Calendar Year Triple Crown she completed in 2018. On November 8, 2018 on a southern point along the Continental Divide Trail in Grants, New Mexico Heather Anderson, known as “Anish” on the trail, became the first women to complete a Calendar Year “Triple Crown”of thru hiking completing the Appalachian Trail (AT), Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), and Continental Divide Trail (CDT), a combined distance of 7,900 miles with a vertical gain of more than one million feet, in a single year. In the process she set a female Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the route, hiking it in 251 days, 20 hours, 10 minutes and became the only female “Triple Triple Crowner” having competed all three trails three times since 2003.

Elaine Bissonho is known as Brazil nut on the trail. She grew up in Brazil and currently lives in Bend, Oregon. She became the third female to earn her double triple crown from ALDHA West this past Fall at the Gathering, putting her in the ranks with Anish and Yogi.
We talk about her 2018 hike on the PCT when she hiked from Mexico to Canada in 66 days. She pushed herself, knowing that Anish had done it in 60 days. Brazil Nut took three showers on this thru hike and a bunch of cold plunges in various lakes along the route.
She talks about her fears on trail. How she handles them and what are her fears.
A friend in Boston encouraged her to go on her first hike. “I don’t hike!” was Brazil Nut’s first response. Crazy to think that. They ended up hiking in New Hampshire and she went on many hikes in that area afterward. The White Mountains were her first love.
Stretching is very important for Brazil Nut. She would use her elbows to work on her legs and she tries to keep her feet lubed up. She uses three different types of socks which she changes out during the day along with a healthy dose of vaseline.
She is hoping to do the Arizona Trail, Great Divide Trail and the Pacific Northwest Trail this year.

Candice Burt wears many hats in the world of Ultrarunning. She is a runner herself, she directs and holds multiple races every year and now she has started a podcast called Humans of Ultrarunning.
We talk about the trails near her home in Leavenworth, WA. One of her favorite spots, the Enchantments, is only 13 miles away. Hiking, running and skiing are easy to do in her hometown.
Her three 200 mile ultra marathons are known as the triple crown of 200’s. The Tahoe 200, the Bigfoot 200 and the Moab 240 Endurance Run.
I paused to note Candice had just raced the Hurt 100 ultra marathon in Hawaii about a week before our conversation. She brings up her goal to get the supported FKT on the 800 mile long Arizona Trail this year.
Humans of Ultrarunning 12 or 13 great episodes. We mention Courtney Dauwalter from episode one, Gene Dykes from her most recent episode and her bonus show about Candice’s own solo/unsupported FKT on the Wonderland Trail.
I also asked Candice about women’s strength in long distance running and hiking and what are her fears when out alone.

Ras and Kathy of Team Ultrapedestrian were back on the podcast to talk about their book 98 Days of Wind. Their attempt to yo-yo the Grand Enchantment Trail ended amidst a forest fire, extreme heat and health issues.
Despite not completing their attempt, I couldn’t help but talk about their positive outlook on life and even on the hike itself. It rings through the book as a positive motivation! I compared the book to a modern day diary, using social media posts as a part of their daily journaling.
