In town for a celebration of an exhibition by feminist artist Carolee Schneemann, Dodie Bellamy read from The Buddhist at the Henry Art Gallery on October 20th, 2011 and an excerpt was featured on SPLAB Presents for the week of October 31, 2011.

Brenda Hillman finished off the SPLAB 2011 Visiting Poets Series in fine fashion November 11 and 12 with a brilliant talk on Innovation and Activism in Poetry Friday the 11th (Veterans Day), a workshop that left at least one participant "buzzing all day" and a reading featuring her brilliant new work. One long-time stalwart of the local poetry scene said it was "the best reading I have ever seen her give."

Brenda Hillman Workshop

On September 24th 2011, poets gathered (at SPLAB) & in 450 cities around the world in an event called 100 Thousand Poets for Change. The event is designed to change how we see global community and work to cure symptoms of a world that, in Gary Snyder’s words, is “upside down.”

Seattle’s venue for 100 Thousand Poets for Change was SPLAB in Columbia City and the featured poet was Suquamish native Cedar Sigo. After growing up on the Port Madison Indian Reservation across the Sound from Seattle, he attended Naropa University on a scholarship and now lives in San Francisco. His new book is published by the famed City Lights and is entitled Stranger in Town. SPLAB Presents for the week of September 12. For the week of September 19th. Xi Chuan, peN

While in China for the 3rd Qinghai Lake International Poetry Festival this past August, I met one of the most renowned younger Chinese poets, Xi Chuan. He has a book coming out next year entitled Notes on the Mosquito, published in translation by New Directions. In Seattle recently to celebrate the release of an anthology of contemporary poetry from China, Push Open the Window (Copper Canyon Press) he talked about the opening in Chinese poetry after the Cultural Revolution. Johnny Moses

This week on SPLAB Presents, Paul Nelson has a bit of Johnny Moses from his new CD, produced at Jack Straw Productions. Johnny Moses is a Tulalip Native American raised in the remote Nuu-chah-nulth village of Ohiat on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Johnny, whose traditional name is Whis.stem.men.knee, was raised in the traditional native ways by his grandparents, and is a master storyteller, oral historian, traditional healer and respected spiritual leader. He has two new recordings, one of which is Snohomish Songs of Puget Sound.
