How should an art organization work if it intends to not only talk about, but also practice the commons? How do its front end (presentation) and back end (organization and mode of working) relate? From this starting point, we aim to learn to see the art organization, with its capabilities and resources, as a commons, and discuss its “unlearning” practice and trajectories.

In We Are the Time Machines: Time and Tools for Commoning, de tentoonstelling die momenteel bij Casco te zien is, zijn instrumenten [tools] te vinden die voortkomen uit het project Site for Unlearning: Art Organization (2014-heden), een samenwerking tussen kunstenaar Annette Krauss en het Casco-team. De instrumenten resulteren uit verschillende oefeningen waarin het ontleren van productiviteit centraal staat. Specifiek kijken we naar hoe we als team en instituut de relatie tussen business en busyness kunnen ontleren, om tot een werkvorm te komen waarin de commons centraal staan. Tijdens het Forum zullen we het project introduceren en bevragen we wat wij denken dat kunst is. Casco dient hierbij als concreet voorbeeld.

Nora Sternfeld, curator, onderwijzer en Professor Curating and Mediating Art aan de Aalto Universiteit, zal haar onderzoek naar kritisch management in het curatoriële veld presenteren, een collectief project dat zij in 2014 co-initieerde. Ondanks het grote succes van kritische artistieke en curatoriële projecten, viel het Sternfeld op dat die kritiek zich niet wijdt aan de praktijk van institutionele productie. Zij pleit daarom voor “the productivity of thinking critique and praxis together”.

Andrea Phillips, kunsttheoreticus, PARSE Professor of Art en Hoofd Onderzoek aan de Valand Academy, Universiteit van Göteborg heeft veel geschreven over mogelijke vormen van politieke, architecturale, en sociale organisatie in het artistieke en curatoriële veld. Ze stelt dat het dagelijks management binnen kunstinstellingen belangrijker is dan het aandragen van inhoudelijke kritiek alleen en onderstreept het belang van artistieke praktijken die zich in de zogenaamde “imperial periphery” situeren.

Even if we are living in a society where capitalism seems to dominate, another form of economy of community well-being and non-monetary interaction is already being practiced: “community economy.” Coupled with the proposal to replace the current waged-based society with “universal basic income,” this forum delves into these two alternative and more equal models of economic organization.

Utrecht-based research collective (Un)usual Business, which was founded as a collaboration between Casco and Kritische Studenten Utrecht (KSU) in 2013, takes Gibson-Graham’s ideas as a starting point and a reference for the research they conduct on the political potential of existing community economies in Utrecht. Not only will they present the work they have been doing, including their journal Utrecht Meent Het and How To Get Together series, but they will also assess their own organizational structure and modus operandi as a possible model that goes against the grain of hegemonic economic logic.
