Just a decade ago, only so many people believed that eSports or Gaming as a whole would even be viable going forward. Just a few years later, the industry has grown so exponentially that it surpassed the billion-dollar mark in 2019. From its humble rise during the days of Atari to multimillion-dollar esport tournaments being held now, the global gaming industry attracted fans, players, investors, sponsors, and even governing bodies, and is shaping up to be a behemoth. Globally, time spent on mobile devices has officially surpassed time spent on television, with users spending eight minutes more per day on their mobile devices. By 2021, this figure had risen to more than 30 minutes. Over 380 million people watch esports worldwide both online and in person. Just for context, the industry has a larger audience than Netflix, Hulu, Espn and Disney+ combined. The 1 billion dollar mark it crossed in 2019, became 180 billion the very next year. Many investors are looking at the industry as a new investment opportunity and are establishing new esport teams to compete in official tournaments. With this staggering growth rate, it is with absolute certainty one can say that e-sports is going to be a dominant part of the internet in the coming decade with its potentially just being unveiled. So with that in mind, it also poses a few key questions. In today’s episode, we will talk about the size of the e-Sport industry in terms of investment, revenue generation, and major costs while also throwing some light on the risks and concerns associated with the same.
