Jesus has been called many different things by many different people. Prophet, priest, liar, and heretic just to name a few. Although much has been said about him, what do we really know about the Jesus of the bible? What does Jesus have to say for himself? During this Easter season we are going to look through the Gospel of John at the seven “I AM” statements Jesus made to see if we can get a peek at the man behind the movement.

I AM (Week 3) - The Gate
In our modern world most Amercians don’t have much contact with shepherds. Almost no one has had free range sheep in the last 100 years. During Jesus day it was very different. There were not fences or barns for sheep. They went where the grazing was good. Today we are looking at a statement Jesus made about being the gate or the sheep gate. What does he mean and what does it mean for us today? Join us as we dive into John 10:1-10.

SCRIPTURE: 
John 10:1-10
10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.
7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

I AM (Week 2) - The Light of the World
We know a bit about light and dark. Whether from books or movies the concept of light versus darkness is everywhere. Jesus uses this understanding to give us a glimpse at why he came into the world. Jesus says “I am the light of the world”. What does he mean and how does that impact us? Join us this week as we work this out.

SCRIPTURE: 
Genesis 1:1-5
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

Isaiah 60:1-3
“Arise, shine, for your light has come,
    and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.
2 See, darkness covers the earth
    and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you
    and his glory appears over you.
3 Nations will come to your light,
    and kings to the brightness of your dawn

John 8:12
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

First-century Christians considered Jesus a living king. He was their Lord. He was not merely Lord of their prayers and worship rituals. Jesus was Lord of how they lived their lives. His authority was a living authority and held sway over every facet of life, including their posture toward imperial authority. They understood, and we should understand, that while His kingdom was not of this world, it was for this world and intersected with every aspect of our world.

Jesus didn't leave it up to us to determine how to advance his Kingdom because His cause is unlike any other. Jesus didn’t come to rebrand, repeat, or retread something old. Just the opposite, He came for something brand new. If we are to live in God’s Kingdom, we have to get on Jesus' bandwagon not our own.  We have to put Jesus first and not our own desires. Jesus didn’t leave the building of His Kingdom up to us but, he includes us in the building of His Kingdom.

Fear is motivating. People can be more easily motivated by fear than by anything else. A culture war, by necessity, includes a stoking of fear. Fear of our rights being taken away, fear of our financial future, fear of the price of gas, fear of our very existence being changed by THEM. What if, instead of fear of THEM, we embraced others in the unity of God’s love for one another?

2020 was an unprecedented time in American history. Things were crazy. Lines were drawn and families split over political thoughts. As Americans, we have a deep desire to win. As Christians, sometimes that comes out and can cause harm. We can choose to exclude because we do not agree. Jesus had no such issue. How can we embrace instead of defeat? How can we lose everything and still be victorious?

Wholehearted Trust - (Week 3)
Trust is a difficult thing. It is easy to trust when things are going well but harder to trust when things are difficult. To be WHOLEHEARTED we need to trust God. How can we learn to trust? How can we truly live into the promise that God has in mind for us?

Jeremiah 29:10-11
10 This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Romans 5:6
6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.

Matthew 6:25-27
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

Wholehearted Purpose - (Week 2)
God was preparing for Jesus and redemption from the beginning.  The things that looked impossible for Israel to overcome ended up being crucial to God’s plan.  The diaspora, the failures, and the victories.  All of these pour into the redemption story and reveal something powerful.  God’s plans are for the victory of the Kingdom.  Sometimes we can become so focused on the moment that we miss being a part of the greater mission of the Kingdom of God.

SCRIPTURE: 
Jeremiah 29:11
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Romans 8:28-30
28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[i] have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

Romans 8:31a-34
31A If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Wholehearted Love - (Week 1)

New years can inspire new commitments.  We can be inspired to try to change bad habits and embrace new things. What would it look like if one of the things we changed was that we embraced Jesus wholeHEARTedly? When asked, Jesus reveals the most important law and that truth is still meaningful to each of us today. Jesus desires for us to be wholehearted in our love of God and neighbor.  Join us as we seek to find a new way forward this year. where we let God have control.

SCRIPTURE: 

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Mark 12:28-34

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.
