I had a whole thing that I wanted to write about the start of spring training and emotion and life and so much stuff to go with this episode, but I couldn’t put it together how I wanted, so it’s not happening. Let it be said that I’m so happy to be back podding with this group (I know we’ve had a couple of other episodes along the way, but the last time Addy was on this podcast feed was The Fuckin’ Emma Stone Game.
And that brings us to the replacement content for the thing I didn’t write, as Emma Stone is out and Kate Upton is in, as we discussed on the show. That’s right, it’s time to talk about nudes.
Specifically, Gary Carter, whose 1986 Ivory soap commercial appeared in my YouTube scroll…
That’s a really good commercial! They did a nice job cutting the highlights, the supporting actor looks kinda like Tim Teufel, and Carter was a natural for ads with his effusive demeaor.
But it was something else that struck me. That bathroom tile.
That bathroom tile is so familiar. Why is that bathroom tile so familiar? Where have I seen that bathroom tile, to the extent that I don’t remember that bathroom, but am struck with instant nostalgia?
Zest, like Ivory, is (or was) a Proctor & Gamble product. Did P&G have a shower studio for its ads? How many famous people got in their duhnahduhnahs in that space? Is it still there? Is this the world’s most famous bathroom? Ah, well, Iron Head asked questions better than I do. —JS

I’m Down was recorded on June 14, 1965. That night, in Cincinnati, Ed Kranepool drew a leadoff walk in the second inning… Charley Smith reached first base on a strikeout and wild pitch in the fourth (and was erased on a Kranepool double play ball)… and those were the only baserunners that the Mets got in 10 innings against Jim Maloney, while striking out 17 times in those 10 innings.
Thing is, Frank Lary kept the Reds off the scoreboard, if not the bases, for eight innings, and Larry Bearnarth kept the double shutout going until Johnny Lewis homered off Maloney to lead off the 11th. The Mets got a second hit from Roy McMillan in the inning, but Jesse Gonder bounced into another DP. Bearnarth worked around a Frank Robinson single in the bottom of the 11th to close it out, and the Mets had themselves an absolutely bizarre win in front of a crowd of less than 6,000 people at Crosley Field.
Later that year, Maloney threw another 10-inning no-hitter at Wrigley Field, only that time, the Reds managed to get him a run in extras.
Happy Presidents Day, a holiday that isn’t really celebrated in any way other than a lot of folks having the day off, and school vacations. A fresh Willets Pod episode is coming your way tomorrow with Addy, Chrystal, Colleen, and Jesse. And we’re getting a bunch of content ready to go, including some stuff to go with these We Can Pod It Out posts. (Again, the show is great and I love it and love having it set our pace every day at noon… it just feels weird to me, personally, sending everyone an email that just has a podcast, cover art, and a video, having spent so long as a purveyor of written words.) —Jesse

James can’t believe he put a shirt on for this. We’re not going to become a video podcast anytime soon, but in the future, we’ll do a better job of communicating the show’s vibe in advance.
And maybe introduce the guests beforehand. Maybe. But also, none of us had ever spoken to each other before except Keelin and Jesse (editor’s note: just say it’s me — also the person writing this editor’s note, let’s get out of this before it gets too meta).
