Dr. Margie Scherk is one of the first veterinarians dedicated to cat medicine. As a board-certified feline practitioner, Margie is also known as the cat expert. We are lucky to chat with her about why cats do not want to go to the vet usually. Cats are solitary animals and do not like anything different from what they are used too. Imagine that you are stuffed in a little crate, put in a car, in waiting in a room full of dogs and that you are smelling lots of strange things. She talks about myths in cat nutrition and how nutrition has to be the cornerstone of veterinary medicine. ‘Food be thy medicine’, nutrition is important for all life stages of cats. The number one problem in cat nutrition is obesity as 60 percent of cats are overweight in the US. Being overweight shortens the cat’s life. Cats need to be healthy and lean! We have a special guest, Dr. Apryl Steele, who is a veterinarian and CEO of the Dumb Friends League, a big animal shelter in Denver, Colorado. She was in private practice for 17 years and now receives 22000 animals per year at the Dumb Friends League (ddfl.org). They have a Solutions spay-neuter clinic, where they spay, deworm and vaccinate cats for free. Last year they did 12000 spays and castrations. During the podcast, Apryl tells us what the advantages are of cat spays and neuters. Last but not least Apryl played a major role in the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP). Jessica works at the Ohio State University as a veterinary specialist in internal medicine with a special focus on cats with kidney disease. Jessica is interested in older cats and she tells us that they tend to collect diseases. Chronic kidney disease is very common and the older the cat is the more frequent it is. The cats with kidney disease urinate more, they may be drinking more and often are losing weight. Cats with kidney disease often do not want to eat and they tend to lose muscle quickly. Regular check-ups with your veterinarian can be helpful. Dr. Quimby gives some handy tips for cats that do not want to eat.
