Nutrition specialist and most compassionate veterinarian, Dr. Julie Churchill, is a guest at the Cat Café PC. Julie is specialized in veterinary nutrition for cats. She talks about myths in cat nutrition and how nutrition has to be the cornerstone of veterinary medicine. ‘Food be thy medicine’, nutrition is important for all life stages of cats. The number one problem in cat nutrition is obesity as 60 percent of cats are overweight in the US. Being overweight shortens the cat’s life. Cats need to be healthy and lean! We also discuss home-made foods, grain-free and raw diets.

In the tenth episode of the @catcafepodcast, Dr. Susan and Dr. Jolle explain how you can become a cat doctor or a cat surgeon. Dr. Susan is a famous cat doctor and went through many years of training to become who she is. She has 2 cat-only clinics in Ottowa, Canada. Dr. Jolle is a specialized surgeon, with a big heart for cats. He spent many, many years studying and is now boarded in veterinary surgery in both Europe and the United States. It is a fun episode with lots of background on your favorite podcast hosts.

We have a special guest, Dr. Apryl Steele, who is a veterinarian and CEO of the Dumb Friends League, a big animal shelter in Denver, Colorado. She was in private practice for 17 years and now receives 22000 animals per year at the Dumb Friends League (ddfl.org). They have a Solutions spay-neuter clinic, where they spay, deworm and vaccinate cats for free. Last year they did 12000 spays and castrations. During the podcast, Apryl tells us what the advantages are of cat spays and neuters. Last but not least Apryl played a major role in the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP). AAFP has a great program called Cat-Friendly Practice (catfriendly.com) with lots of great tips of cat owners.

The Cat Cafe Podcast is back with the amazing Dr. Jessica Quimby. Jessica works at the Ohio State University as a veterinary specialist in internal medicine with a special focus on cats with kidney disease. Jessica is interested in older cats and she tells us that they tend to collect diseases. Chronic kidney disease is very common and the older the cat is the more frequent it is. The cats with kidney disease urinate more, they may be drinking more and often are losing weight. Cats with kidney disease often do not want to eat and they tend to lose muscle quickly. Regular check-ups with your veterinarian can be helpful. Dr. Quimby gives some handy tips for cats that do not want to eat.

Dr. Susan and Dr. Jolle work their way through the 3M square feet of the Consumer Electronics Show 2020 and give you the highlights that will and may affect your cats well being. From automated litter boxes, cat robots, automated feeding stations, and exercise wheels there was lots to report on. The awesome cat owner cat cafe podcast is hosting Dr. Mike Lappin, a famous internal medicine specialist in infectious diseases of cats. He represents the One Health Committee of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association. Mike has a message: People are better and healthier with cats. Anything we can do to be happy will improve our life and having pets make you healthier! We also talk about what you can catch from a cat and how you can prevent that. However, if your cat is healthy and you do your deworming regularly and we control fleas and ticks, the odds that you get sick from the cat is almost zero. Mike also gives some good tips on how to stay healthy. On a funny note, when Mike gets sad, he gets a cat. He has now only five.

In our next catcafepodcast, we host Dr. Nicole Ehrhart, an amazing veterinary surgical oncologist. We are talking about cat cancer and the most common warning signs you, as a cat owner, need to look for. Cancer is common in the older cat and cats are masters of disguise. Nicole tells us what she does in her daily veterinary practice and her academic hospital really looks like a human hospital. Treating cancer is a team sport so she works closely with lots of other specialists. But she stresses the fact that the owner is part of that team too. We need to make informed decisions for a patient that can’t decide for themselves. Luckily, there are lots of options in cancer therapy and discussing these options with the cat owner is of extreme importance. In her patients, quality of life is the most important goal. What a great episode!

We are so excited to host our first guest on the Cat Cafe Podcast, Dr. Ann Hohenhaus. Dr. Ann is a tumor specialist at the Animal Medical Center in NYC. We talk about the AMC and about feral cats in New York City. Ann deals with a lot of senior cats and we highlight the top 5 diseases in the senior or older cat. Her number one tip is to regularly go to your veterinarian. Ann fosters kittens and teaches them early on to like to sleep in a carrier, so they do not mind being transported in them. We also talk about simple things that may not be normal in cats, like vomiting. Last but not least we talk about lumps and bumps. What do you need to do when you find one?

Our cats are loosely domesticated and are supposed to eat multiple times a day. In nature, they hunt small rodents and that takes almost all day and a lot of effort.
