Some technologists fall into the typical stereotype of being a button pusher. This is due to lack of proper training, education and learning bad habits from experienced CT technologists. This week's episode I talk about some examples of how this can creep up on you as a new CT technologist during your training and what you can do to not become a button pusher.
Topics discussed in this episode:
Example 1: You are unsure why some exams are done the way they are, just told to push this button and this button, select this exam, etc.
Example 2: You ask questions because you are unsure of something and the answer is: "that's the way we've always done it."
Example 3: Experienced technologists feel intimidated when you know more than them, I share a story about an incident that happened 10 years ago with a fellow technologist.

This week's episode, I continue talking about becoming the GO-TO CT TECH with excelling in the common CT exams we do daily and how to execute them correctly. I give you some tips on what you can do today to execute your CT exams correctly.
Topics discussed in this episode:
Patient Positioning: Setting up the patient-supine prone, head first feet first, proper centering along the Z-axis, laser light, Zero the table.

Protocol Selection: Head WO, PE Chest, A/P With, CTA Head and Neck, Stroke Protocol, Facial Bones, C-spine.

Exam Set up: Lines or Box, Starting and Ending Points, Centering the Box/Lines, amount of contrast to be given, timing for exam.

Exam Review and Completion: After patient is scanned, reviewing of images to be sure all anatomy is covered, look for any motion, repeat of certain areas if patient moved, proper contrast enhancement.

Understanding the layout of the CT scanner and operator console is crucial.

Know the location of buttons, how to select protocols, initiate exposure, tilt the gantry, and manipulate the table.

Mastery of these basics streamlines the scanning process and ensures efficient operation.
Strategy 2: Optimize Scan Parameters:
Dive into the significance of parameters such as pitch, mA, rotation time, and slice thickness.

Learn how these variables impact image quality, radiation dose, and scan duration.

This week's episode, I talk about how new CT technologists can learn the basics without the expensive of paying for a CT program, the realities of the CT programs out there, and how I help them through my courses and coaching program.
Topics discussed in this episode:
When starting out in CT, some facilities will have you go through a CT program and clinicals on your own time to learn CT.

The training is often unpaid, and there is a a complex list of 125 exams that need to be completed in order to sit for the CT registry.

The reality of CT Programs: there aren't many of them, they are expensive, and you have to find your own clinical site. The curriculum is focused mainly on the physics of CT instead of the basics that every beginner CT tech needs

The clinical site is where techs get most of their training and hands-on training to learn the modality.

New CT techs would benefit if CT departments had a checklist to guide new techs when learning the CT basics.

It is the tech's responsibility to invest themselves to be the best technologist they can become.

April 09, 2024EP. 26 Where the HELL Do I Even START!? Become a CT Expert
This week's episode, I talk about how being a new CT technologist can be overwhelming and 5 tips to lead you into becoming a CT expert.
Topics discussed in this episode:
Being a new technologist is very overwhelming and can be scary.

Maybe your first time looking at a CT machine and you think where so I even start?

Most departments pair you up with a senior tech that may be experienced and some may not be.
They will assess your skill set if any, to see what you know, and to get an idea of where you need help in your training

Carry a small notebook with you, take lots of notes and ask a ton of questions because you can't remember everything!

Look around the scan room, figure out where all the supplies are, how to load the injector, what the buttons on the machine do, etc.

Get familiar at the CT console with protocols, how to select the correct one, how to set up the scan, how to properly center your patient to get an optimal scan and the correct dose is calculated.

Get comfortable with flushing all your IVs before injecting contrast media, this is an important step that should not be skipped!
