22 min - EP. 38 Be Seen as a Professional: Why Advocacy and Our Voice Matters
This week, I talk about the recent buzz about the Office of Management and Budget with them reviewing the Standard Occupation Classifications for Professions from 2018 and possible revisions for 2028. Public comments were encouraged and the deadline was August 12. Topics that were for possible review: "addition of new detailed occupations or occupational groups including specifically care workers with possible changes to major, minor and broad occupation groups." This is huge for the radiology community as we should be seen and classified as professionals. I also discuss why advocating for this change is important and why our voice matters.

15 min - EP. 37 The World of CT: The Role of a CT Technologist
On this week's episode, I dive into the role we as CT technologists and the importance of that role. I give some points on the demand of our modality, how necessary communication and collaboration is and the future of CT with AI integration.
Topics discussed in the episode:
- Overview of The CT Tech's Role: operating the scanner, injector, reviewing orderings, verifying labs, allergies, prior exams, etc. preparing patients for the scan, patient centering, getting a quality exam, proper patient care.
- Modality is in high demand, we see many patients during all shifts and 90% of radiology exams are CT.
- Important role in diagnosing medical conditions.
- Skills and Qualifications: 2 years of x-ray school and be a registered radiologic technologist to begin working in CT.
- Some techs may take a CT program through a college to be registry eligible. Some techs are able to cross-train on-the-job paid or unpaid.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail is needed in CT.
- Continuing education is important to keep up with the latest trends and advancements.
- Day in the life of a CT tech: not all cases are simple, we deal with complex cases, i.e. contracted patients, peds patients, AMS, unresponsive patients, trauma, ICU, etc.
- There are opportunities to grow into another modality, management, education or traveler.
- The Future of CT: AI integration, spectral CT, new applications and trends being introduced. The ability to adapt.

20 min - EP. 36 The "July Effect" The Incoming of New Residents
This week's episode I discuss the "July Effect" this phenomenon that occurs every July where we see a new group of residents and the high volume of ordering CTs mostly in the emergency departments.
This can be frustrating for patients and CT departments as patients can receive unnecessary exams, overexposure due to additional exams ordered requiring multiple trips to the CT department.
Communication is very important between the residents and the technologists for the sake of the patient.
5 ways we can help residents utilize CT appropriately:
1. Review of patient history and prior imaging: this can help in unnecessary CT exams. This can be challenging when patients are poor historians, unconscious, trauma, etc.
2. Communication with Radiologists: this is important as it takes the technologist out of playing the middle man. Radiologists can provide input on the correct imaging based on the patient's clinical history.
3. Use of Alternative Imaging Modalities: The use of ultrasound or MRI can provide better imaging based on the patient's clinical history if appropriate.
4. Protocol-Driven Methods: Having clear protocols and guidelines for different clinical scenarios have help residents order accurate CT exams.
5. Decision Support Tools: encourage the use of Image Wisely imaging exams criteria tool that can give them guidance on best imaging practices.

Some technologists fall into the typical stereotype of being a button pusher. This is due to lack of proper training, education and learning bad habits from experienced CT technologists. This week's episode I talk about some examples of how this can creep up on you as a new CT technologist during your training and what you can do to not become a button pusher.
Topics discussed in this episode:
Example 1: You are unsure why some exams are done the way they are, just told to push this button and this button, select this exam, etc.
Example 2: You ask questions because you are unsure of something and the answer is: "that's the way we've always done it."
Example 3: Experienced technologists feel intimidated when you know more than them, I share a story about an incident that happened 10 years ago with a fellow technologist.
