Villanelle: I know. It surprised me too.

This short dialogue at the beginning of Killing Eve (season 2) made us think: what preconceptions of female violence do we often hold?

Female violence - whether it is verbal, political or physical, whether it is enacted at an individual or collective level - has wide implications in society. So, in this episode we are reflecting on how female violence been treated throughout culture, in the court systems AND in the media.

Whether it is mediatisation of crime, sensationalist coverage of shoot outs, or the femme fatale stereotype, there's something about female violence on screen which sparks public interest, and evokes a perverse fascination.

Obviously, when TV and cinema are showing violence on screen, they aren't advocating it. BUT, does this constant stream of violent visuals cause a loss of sensitivity to violent culture?

Tune in for an intense episode where we unpack the representation of female violence on screen, discuss whether female directors manage to successfully subvert the femme fatale stereotype, and grapple with the ethics of our cultural obsession with watching violence.

MEMES! Incredibly varied and ever changing, there's just too many to name.

But, what's so funny about a meme? What message does a meme impart which a good old fashioned text message just can't communicate? Are memes part of a short-sighted Internet culture soon to die out?

In this episode, we explore the origin of the meme (yes - before it took on digital dimensions) and its immense power to transcend linguistic and national barriers. You've unconsciously bonded with a stranger over a meme about a homework left unfinished, you've tagged your friend in which breakfast item they are, or you've participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge: whatever it is, you're probably more entangled in meme culture than you like to believe.

In this episode, I will be looking closely at this label CREATIVE (why do we assign it to some people and not to others??) and at the research behind what makes someone more creative.
