  • Binge-watching: a new type of addiction?
Binge-watching means 'watching 2-6 episodes of a TV show in 1 sitting', and 61% Netflix users regularly engage in this type of spectatorship.
WELCOME back Professor Elia Margarita Cornelio Mari to discuss this relatively new behavioural phenomenon.
We talk about WHAT, HOW, and WHY people binge watch, uncovering how binge-watching relates to FOMO and moral panic.
We also explore the genuine negative side to binge-watching (feelings of guilt, shame, and regret) and predict whether this mode of viewing is here to stay...

  • Why do we communicate using emojis?
Emojis are digital images that are added to messages in electronic communication, and they are fast becoming their own language.
Dr Monica Riordan (Chatham University) joins me to discuss how emojis affect non-verbal communication.
We talk about how our culture shapes how we use emojis, how emojis relate to social change, and whether we should we use emojis at work.
So, if a picture is worth 1000 words... are emojis priceless?

In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Sanne Feenstra (University of Groningen) to discuss this widespread phenomenon.

  • Healing power of touch
Touch is arguably one of the more overlooked senses, and we only seem to pay attention to touch when we are robbed of it.
In this week's episode, I take a deep dive into the science, benefits, and impacts of touch with Professor Francis McGlone (Liverpool John Moores University)
We touch on a variety of topics, including:
    How touch impacts our development
Why we need to incorporate touch into conversation around loneliness
How to counter 'touch starvation' in the Covid-19 pandemic
Touch makes up an intrinsic part of the human experience: it's how we connect with others and form social bonds, and it's time we pay more attention to how this absence of touch - caused by social distancing and isolation - is impacting our lives.

    Disclaimer:
Not all types of touch are welcome and appropriate, and touch can be very threatening. In this episode, we do not discuss this, instead hoping to equip people with the knowledge of how appropriate touch can benefit their wellbeing. Helping people to understand touch means they can understand what is harmful, and regulate boundaries.

  • Female leadership in the pandemic
In light of International Women's Day, let's take a moment to celebrate competent female leadership this year!!
Tune in for a thoughtful conversation with Kristín Vala Ragnarsdóttir, sustainability scientist, activist, and Professor of Earth Sciences at the Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland.
We discuss Vala's recent publication - which she co-authored last year - on how female-led countries have managed the Covid-19 outbreak. Female-led countries had fewer deaths, were quicker to lock down, and female leaders tend to prioritise human health over economic outcome.
Reflecting on the theme of International Women's Day 2021 #choosetochallenge, we also discuss the challenges female leaders face, and how we can continue to build effective female leaders of today and tomorrow.
International Women’s Day is a day of focus, contemplation and celebration. I hope this episode provides opportunity to be in global solidarity with other women, as well as to honour and herald female leaders throughout history.

  • Cinema, touch, and the climate movement with Laura U. Marks
This week, I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with film scholar, author, and professor Laura. U Marks.
Laura is well-known in film studies for her work on affect theory and haptic visuality. She has inspired a generation of students to change the way they think about film. Her work has transformed film studies in a profound way.
In this episode, we talk about how films engage viewers through their bodies, discuss the relationship between spectatorship and power, and consider if we are increasingly drawn to haptic images because the pandemic has left us 'starved of touch'.
Laura, a leading voice in the climate movement - is also the founder of the 'Small File Media Festival', and we connect the climate crisis to issues around screening, film-making and production.
I am BEYOND excited to share this thoughtful conversation with you - hope you enjoy!
