Catching Up On Cinema's "No Theme November" event month continues, this time with a review of Byron Haskin's The War of the Worlds (1953)!
Based on the H.G. Wells novel of the same name, the film is the first film version of the oft adapted sci-fi classic.
Boasting Academy Award winning visual effects and masterful sound design, the film is one of the most iconic of the "invaders from outer space" subgenre of the 1950's.

In this week's installment of Catching Up On Cinema's No Theme November event, Trevor is once against joined by his brother Matt in reviewing Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi action classic, Total Recall (1990)!
Headlined by a prime Arnold Schwarzenegger, the film is a wildly inventive tale that pulls double duty as both a simple blood and guts action thriller, and a thought provoking study in multi-layered narrative structures.
Boasting state of the art special and visual effects by ILM and Rob Bottin, as well as Verhoeven's trademark atmosphere of cerebral sleaze, the film is a truly spectacular experience that stands at or near the top of both Arnold and Verhoeven's respective filmographies.

In the final installment of "Kyle's Killer October", Kyle serves us a heaping mound of Danish arthouse in the form of Lars Von Trier's Antichrist (2009)!
Officially classified as "experimental psychological horror", the film represents a deliberate attempt on the part of the enigmatic filmmaker to create a true horror film.
Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe as a married couple that have recently lost their infant son, the film is a visceral and highly visual exploration of grief, pain and despair.
An intensely personal exploration of his own anxieties and depression, the film is deeply rich and allegorical, but only truly known to the writer-director himself.
CHAOS. REIGNS.

CAUTION: THIS PODCAST CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS FOR BEN WHEATLEY'S KILL LIST!
In this week's installment of Catching Up On Cinema's "Kyle's Killer October" event month, Brad from the Cinema Speak podcast stops by to review Ben Wheatley's Kill List (2011)!
A gripping and utterly unpredictable experience, the film is somehow at once a modern horror classic, and something not at all horror related as well.
Featuring the likes of Neil Maskell, Michael Smiley and MyAnna Buring, all of whom are partially credited with improvising portions of the script, Kill List is an entrancing and masterful horror film that is best experienced without any prior knowledge of it's nature and content.

It's once again time for some more Tales From the Shelf!
In this month's episode, Trevor is once again joined by Brad from the Cinema Speak podcast for what the duo are calling, "The Steelbook Showdown".
As the name implies, this episode of Tales From the Shelf sees Trevor and Brad sharing some stories about the steelbooks in their respective movie collections.
A niche collecting practice amid a somewhat niche collecting hobby, steelbook collecting tends to be reserved for hardcore, or hardcore adjacent collectors.

This week we celebrate the 100th episode of Catching Up On Cinema!
In the past 2 years we've had a ton of fun exploring reviewing movies that were a bit off the beaten path, but to celebrate this historic milestone for the show, we've decided to give ourselves a victory lap in the form of a review of the 90's sci-fi classic, Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)!
Directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the film is one of the most solidly constructed action movies in all of film history.
Boasting groundbreaking CGI effects work, and stellar performances from costar Linda Hamilton, newcomer Edward Furlong, and Robert Patrick as the menacing and iconic T-1000, the film also holds the distinction of being regarded as one of the best sequels of all time.
Regardless of film's countless accolades and critical acclaim, at the end of the day, T2 (the title most true fans know the film by) is film that is personally important to both Kyle and Trevor, and one that feels more than appropriate to serve as subject for our 100th episode.
Thanks for listening!
Here's to 100 more!

It's once time for Catching Up On Cinema's 2nd annual "Kyle's Killer October" event month!
This month, Kyle has selected a number of films that fall under the category of "unconventional horror."
First up this Killer October, is Jonathan Glazer's thought provoking sci-fi horror film, Under the Skin (2013).
Adapted from a novel of the same name, and starring Scarlett Johannsen as an alien hiding in plain sight in modern day Scotland, the film is a rich experience, both in terms of thematic content and aesthetic presentation.
Featuring lovely shot compositions, a truly unique and detailed soundscape, and powerful, borderline non-verbal acting performances, the film is a beautiful, if unnerving piece of modern horror history.
