In this week's episode of Catching Up On Cinema's Anime August event month, Trevor and Kyle sit down for a casual, if not meandering review of Masami Obari's Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture (1994)!

The concluding (and only feature length) chapter of a short lived anime series, the film largely serves as a promotional tool for the SNK fighting game series of the same name, as well as that of a platform for gratuitous fanservice.

A treasure hunt/chase story in the same vein as Avengers: Infinity War or any of the Indiana Jones films, the film is by no means a lazy effort, boasting a gorgeous soundtrack by Toshihiko Sahashi, and ambitous cinematography on the part of first (and only) time feature director Obari.

It's once again time for Anime August here at Catching Up On Cinema!

This week, Trevor forces Kyle to sit through Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000)!

With character designs by Yoshitaka Amano, and featuring fluid, gorgeously rendered animation and background paintings, the film is a Gothic sci-fi actioner that unfortunately suffers from poor pacing and a bloated runtime.

Undeniably stunning in terms of production design and action choreography, the film's technical brilliance is unfortunately only allowed to be appreciated in fits and spurts, making for a frustrating, and somewhat tepid experience.

In the final episode of Catching Up On Cinema's Catching Up On Black & White month, Kyle and Trevor review J. Lee Thompson's, Cape Fear (1962)!

Starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, the film is a gripping thriller with sharp writing and expertly crafted tension and atmosphere.

Over the course of the review, both Kyle and Trevor make numerous references to the Martin Scorsese remake, to the point that this episode effectively doubles as a compare and contrast of the 2 films.

In this week's installment of Catching Up On Cinema's, Catching Up On Black & White event, Kyle and Trevor review James Whales', The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)!

Often heralded as Whales' masterpiece, and a standout among the first cycle of Universal horror films, the movie is a lively and campy classic of horror cinema.

Starring Boris Karloff as the monster, and Elsa Lanchester as the titular bride, the films' true MVP is Ernest Thesiger as the conniving and reptilian Dr. Pretorious.

Wonderfully shot and lit, with lavish production design and sets, the film deserves special note as being not a only a sequel that betters it's predecessor, but a sequel that represents a massive leap forward in nearly every regard.

Written, directed, and edited by Smith (who is also featured in the cast as Silent Bob), the film is an American cultural artifact of the young adult culture and existential angst of the 1990's.

Shot on a shoestring budget, and able performed by an energetic cast of pseudo actors, the film is by no means high art, but is nevertheless quite valuable as a piece of indie film history.

The first major starring role of superstar Errol Flynn and his frequent co-star Olivia de Havilland, the film is a snappy and energetic adventure that continues to entertain in spite of it's age.

Boasting ambitious effects work and handsome production design, the film serves as a rare example of a classic Hollywood film that really does have a little something for everyone.

In the final episode of Catching Up On Cinema's 'Preciating Peter Weller month, Kyle and Trevor sit down to review David Cronenberg's bizarre masterpiece, Naked Lunch (1991)!

Adapted from the literary works and life of Beat Generation author William S. Burroughs, the film is a strange and occasionally barely comprehensible journey into the drug addled fever dreams of a troubled man in troubled times.

Confidently directed by Cronenberg (who also wrote the film), the movie contains many of the images and set pieces one would expect from the master of "body horror", however the film's challenging and dreamlike editing style may it's most noteworthy characteristic.

Fearlessly acted by a cast of notables including the likes of Judy Davis, Ian Holm, and Roy Scheider, the film is certainly not everyone's cup of tea, however it very much earns it's place among the Criterion collection.
