September 10, 2019 The Alien Masterclass - Part 1: Alien (1979)
In celebration of Catching Up On Cinema's 1st year anniversary of programming, Kyle and Trevor take it upon themselves to revisit the show format that kicked off the entire series: The Masterclass!
Seeing as the Predator franchise served as the inaugural Masterclass episode, it only seems fitting that we follow things up with a deep dive into the closely related Alien franchise!

It's the 50th episode of Catching Up On Cinema!
In celebration of this major milestone, Kyle and Trevor decide to revisit a film franchise that was important to both of them in their respective youths, Stephen Sommer's The Mummy Returns (2001)!
While not "good" in the traditional sense, the film is very much a product of it's time and has the distinction of being a very cozy and immensely rewatchable experience.

In the final episode of "Anime August," Trevor reviews the critically acclaimed psychological thriller, Perfect Blue (1997)!
The directorial debut of famed animator Satoshi Kon, the film is notable for it's elaborate editing and rich thematic content.
Please note, the original recording of this episode, featuring both Trevor and Kyle in the standard conversational format, was unfortunately lost due to a hard drive error.
As a result, Trevor was forced to re-record the episode without Kyle, making this the first (and hopefully last) instance of a "solo" episode in the show's history.

Set in the Muromachi era of feudal Japan, the film is an aesthetic wonder, featuring luscious background paintings and lovingly detailed, hand-drawn animation throughout the entirety of it's (considerable) 134 minute run time.

A farcical tale about 2 young men striving to make it big in the anime industry, the 2-part OVA (original video animation) is a unique, multi-layered meta commentary on the medium and culture.
Featuring live-action documentary interviews with a variety of "otaku" (broad definition: nerdy fanatics) the anime is a strong introduction to and examination of the world of anime and manga.

In this final installment of Catching Up On Cinema's "Movies About Making Movies" month, Kyle and Trevor take a look at The Shark is Still Working (2012), Erik Hollander's heartfelt documentary about the making and legacy of Steven Spielberg's legendary blockbuster film, Jaws (1975).
While the documentary is a little fluffy, and perhaps more of a tribute to rather than a true documentary of the making of Jaws, Kyle and Trevor manage to get a good conversation out of it, often going on random tangents and sharing anecdotes that are largely unrelated to the film.
