Today, HERLAND explores social relationships, love, and sexuality—and how fundamentally different Herland's values are from the outside (patriarchal) world the men come from.

This book was written in 1915, when women were largely viewed as domestic non-beings whose primary roles were marriage and motherhood. Yet Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote courageously about a world made better because women were in charge. It amazes me that 111 years later, we still haven’t fully caught up to her vision.

Dr. Livesey, Captain Smollett, Trelawney, Redruth, and Gray make a final, dangerous trip to shore in an overloaded jolly-boat. Israel Hands, acting as gunner for the pirates on the Hispaniola, fires the ship's long-nine cannon at them.

While the crew manages to sink their own boat to avoid further damage and wade ashore, they lose half their provisions and three of their five guns Despite the constant, ineffective bombardment from the pirates, Jim Hawkins returns, safely joining them in the stockade.
