Today’s Gospel is the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. Father Ed Broom reminds us that there has never been more difficult times in the history of the world than today. One of the common themes of the Old Testament is to call the people back to the love of God – they lost their first love, such that they fell in love with idols. There are many more idols today than in the time of Moses. Father Ed Broom defines what an idol is and discusses some of the modern idols in our lives. Jesus says in Revelation 2:4 – “This I have against you, that you have lost your first love.”

Father Ed Broom gives a biographical sketch of this extraordinary Saint – Bishop, Doctor of the Church, Founder of the Redemptorists – Saint Alphonsus Maria de’ Ligouri (1696-1787). Father Ed Broom speaks of efficacious ways our hearts and souls can become that fertile soil for the Word of God to sprout, blossom, and flourish.
