Watch Word for 2022 “Christian courage is holding on an hour longer as we watch for the return of Christ.” Courage is like a muscle. The more we exercise it, the stronger it gets. I sometimes worry that our collective courage is growing weaker from disuse. We don't demand it from our leaders, and our leaders don't demand it from us. The courage deficit is both our problem and our fault. As a result, too many leaders in the public and private sectors lack the courage necessary to honor their obligations to others and to uphold the essential values of leadership. Our Scripture text is 1 Peter 5:1-4. Here we see that “elder,” “overseer,” and “pastor” are used interchangeably to depict church leadership, and that leadership is plural.

We have resumed our series on the church with a topical sermon on the “one another” texts of the New Testament.

Galatians 5:13 - You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love.  

Romans 12:10 - Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.  

Galatians 6:2 - Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.  

Ephesians 4:25 - Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.    

Colossians 3:16 - Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.  

Romans 15:14 - I myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with knowledge and competent to instruct one another.  

John 13:34-35 - “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (35) By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”  

Hebrews 10:24-25 - And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, (25) not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

When you were dead in your sins . . . God made you alive with Christ. (Colossians 2:13) 

He forgave us all our sins. (Colossians 2:13)
