It is common to start the Christian life simply believing. Looking only at Jesus. Then as we go on to look within ourselves at our own human effort. Following conditions and requirements to get somewhere with God or get something from God. That drift is what Paul is countering.

The gospel is not just about a legal thing, a not guilty verdict. It’s the doorway into a Spirit filled, Spirit led, Spirit sustained, Spirit empowered life. There’s a beautiful experiential dimension.

The heart is a complex thing. We can agree with the truth, sing about the truth, even teach the truth — and still, when fear creeps in, reach for rules instead of trusting the gospel that God loves me.

We often think legalism is just insecurity between us and God. Galatians 2 shows that our relationships with people reveal places where the gospel is believed but not yet fully trusted.
