  • November 21, 2020 – National Stuffing Day | National Red Mitten Day

To Stuff Or Not To Stuff The Bird? That Is The Question.

Welcome to November 21st, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a satisfying side dish and pride in our neighbors.

Few things sum up the savory, Thanksgiving meal like a delicious turkey with stuffing.  And the good news for those who prefer to ditch the bird is that this side-dish doesn’t have to be stuffed to be stuffing. Though technically, it’s called dressing when you do.  On National Stuffing Day pause to consider the nostalgic appeal of those humble crusts of bread, onions, celery and herbs.  And if you’re looking for a new family favorite there are endless varieties to discover that include seasonal vegetables, dried fruits, grains and nuts.

Get ready for Canadian Olympic pride with National Red Mitten Day!  Hudson’s Bay company founded this day in 2017 to encourage support for Canadian athletes by wearing their red mittens. To date this iconic trend has raised more than 32 million dollars for the Canadian Olympic Foundation thanks to the generous donation from each mitten sale by the Hudson’s Bay company. The fundraiser began in 2010 when Canada hosted the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.  That year Canada received a record number of medals and a new symbol for Canadian Olympic pride was born.  Why invest in our competitors athletes you ask?  Because cheering on our neighbors with cheery, red mittens is just good sportsmanship.

  • November 20, 2020 – National Absurdity Day | National Child’s Day

This Day Makes Absolutely No Sense At All! So What Will You Get Up To?

Welcome to November 20th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate. ..

We celebrate the ridiculous, zany and off the wall things that folks are apt to get up to with National Absurdity Day.  Our history proves time and again that we love to do things that make absolutely no sense at all.  If you’ve been craving an excuse to cut loose, this day is your ticket to ride the crazy train.  Please use responsibly.  That’ll put marzipan in your pipe plate, bingo?

Today we celebrate the miracle known to parents everywhere as our children.  While not everyone becomes a parent, most of us have some effect on the children around us and today we focus on some important things to remember about early child development. From the time they are born babies spend 60 percent of their energy on brain development.  In fact the human brain grows so quickly that if the rest of a newborn's body grew at that rate it would weigh 170 pounds after only one month.  And while most parents understand their role as their child's first teacher, it's also important to see the bigger picture. Because all caregivers affect the development of a child and social interactions enhance the speed and accuracy of learning at all ages, it's important to remember that it takes a village. On National Child’s Day we honor our children and celebrate those who make a difference to them every day.

  • November 19, 2020 – National Play Monopoly Day | National Carbonated Beverage With Caffeine Day

What's Your Favorite Monopoly Game Piece?

Welcome to November 19th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate getting our “buzz” on with some friendly competition and some light hearted bubbles. More after the break.

Have you ever wondered why the playing pieces for Monopoly are so random? You can thank a bunch of kids for that. The classic board game Monopoly was invented in the 1930s by Charles Darrow and based on the properties and street names of Atlantic City, New Jersey. When it came to the playing pieces, he asked his nieces for help. And they picked through metal charms from a bracelet to create the bizarre collection that includes an iron, a race car, a thimble, and a top hat. Little would they know how many people would fight over the race car over the years. On National Play Monopoly Day, you may enjoy an overly competitive game, just don’t forget the spirit of fun!

Here in North America more than 90 percent of us enjoy caffeine every single day.  But not all of us enjoy tea or coffee. The rest of us can thank a German Chemist who first isolated caffeine from coffee beans in 1819.  Man made carbonation was first discovered by Joseph Priestly in an English brewery and folks began using it for medicinal tonics that later became known as sodas. Today this method of infusing water with carbon dioxide is more popular than ever thanks to the addition of caffeine.   On National Carbonated Beverage With Caffeine Day, we celebrate the satisfying combination that most of us could not do without.

  • November 18, 2020 – Mickey Mouse Birthday | National Vichyssoise Day

Before He Became A Cartoon Icon, This Mouse Was In Silent Movies. Do You Know What His First Line Was?

Welcome to November 18th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a mighty mouse and a cold classic. More after the break.

Today we give a shout out to the world’s most popular cartoon character: Mickey Mouse. Almost everyone knows Walt Disney’s loveable rodent, but here are a few facts about Mickey that you might not have heard: His original name was Mortimer, but Disney’s wife made him change it. His first appearance was in the 1928 silent cartoon, Steamboat Willie. Mickey didn’t speak until the following year’s animated feature The Carnival Kid, in which he worked as a food vendor. His first words were “Hot dog! Hot dog!” He was the first animated character to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978. Today we celebrate the birthday of this little mouse who’s made a big impact

Though some like it hot, most people know the soup Vichyssoise is best served cold.  Here in the States this French classic was first served at the Ritz Carlton by chef Louis Diat in the Summer of 1917. The chef was inspired to recreate the potato and leek soup of his childhood in France.  But how did the French come to love cold soup anyway?  Some believe that the tradition began with King Louis the XV who was so afraid of being poisoned that he had many servants taste his soup first.  By the time it was approved for his consumption, the soup was cold and that is how King Louis came to prefer it.  On National Vichyssoise Day we invite you to rediscover this culinary classic.

  • November 17, 2020 – National Baklava Day | National Homemade Bread Day

What's The Secret To Baking Bread At Home? Perhaps It's Time You Learned.

Welcome to November 17th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate classic comfort foods from around the globe.

Not many foods can be both light and rich at the same time, but baklava holds that distinction. Baklava is made of sheets of phyllo dough layered with honey, sugar, cinnamon, and pistachios. Oh, and butter. Lots of butter. This heavenly dessert got its start way back in the Assyrian Empire around 8th Century BC, when it was made with unleavened bread instead of phyllo. The version we know of was invented during the Ottoman Empire and made its way to Greece, the country it’s most associated with. On National Baklava Day, celebrate this classic rich dessert that’s a sweet bite of history.

Who doesn’t love the warm, comforting aroma of freshly baked bread?  Today we celebrate the tradition of making it at home.  This day was established in the 1980s by the The Homemade Bread Committee from Ann Arbor, Michigan.  The celebration is all about family and friends slowing down, exchanging recipes, and enjoying the process of baking and breaking bread together. Perhaps you’ve already learned how satisfying this tradition can be, and if not, it's time to find an expert and learn those well kept secrets that have been around since the dawn of time.  One thing is for sure: National Homemade Bread Day will bring joy to any home willing to fire up the oven.

  • November 16, 2020 – National Fast Food Day | National Button Day

What's Your Favorite Fast Food Meal?

Welcome to November 16th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate food that’s served fast and a hobby that fills up more than time.

Fast food has its origins in Kansas. In 1921, E.W. Ingram opened a restaurant that you might have heard of—White Castle. They served the same small square burgers as they do today. And the burgers were shaped that way so that more would fit on the grill. When White Castle opened, burgers were thought of as a food only slightly about table scraps for dogs. In order to dispel that notion, Ingram set up the kitchen so that people could see their food being prepared. His “take out” food began selling burgers by the sack, which is now a hallmark of fast food restaurants. On National Fast Food Day, indulge in some of your guilty pleasures, and enjoy the convenience of this “fast meal.”

If you remember Mom or Grandma saving buttons from old clothes, then perhaps you’ll appreciate the charm of this organized hobby.  But for Dalton Stevens of South Carolina, buttons became a way to beat insomnia. Dalton spent his sleepless nights sewing buttons on a denim jacket for nearly three years. When he had completely covered it with 16,333 buttons, the jacket weighed over 16 pounds!  Word got out and people began mailing him buttons which he used to cover shoes, doors and even a commode. In 1990 the Guinness World Records certified that “The Button King” owned the world’s largest collection: 439,900 of them without any duplicates. On National Button Day, we celebrate these tiny treasures and the many uses they serve.

  • November 15, 2020 – National Bundt Day | National Philanthropy Day

This Pan Was Made By Request And Later Rose To Fame With A Famous Bake Off!

Welcome to November 15th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate traditional cakes and gifted givers.

    H. David Dalquist was the first inventor to cast the aluminum pan known as the bundt.  In 1950 he created the pan in his Minnesota based Nordic Ware company for a local women’s group who wanted to bake a traditional kugelhopf or ring-shaped cake.  Naming the pan for the German word for bond, Dalquist added the ‘t’ to the end of “bund” and patented the pan in a stroke of foresight genius. In 1966 the pan was used to create the “Tunnel of Fudge” cake in a Pillsbury bake off that inspired bakers everywhere!  Over 200,000 orders for the pan streamed in and over 60 million have been sold to date.  On National Bundt Day celebrate the bond of baking with your own family!

Giving back to the community is important and no one did that quite like Andrew Carnegie. As a child, he and his family emigrated to the United States from Scotland and he got a job as a bobbin boy at a cotton mill. Decades later, he became a railroad and steel tycoon who had amassed one of the largest fortunes of all time. Adjusting for inflation, he was worth over $350 billion. Wanting to leave the world a better place, Andrew set up pensions for his employees, gave donations that built universities, museums, and nearly 3,000 public libraries. On National Philanthropy Day, we celebrate the successful men and women who make a difference by helping others.

  • November 14, 2020 – National Pickle Day | National Family PJ Day

    Who Makes The Best Pickles?

Welcome to November 14th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate pucker power and a day in your PJs.

One of the oldest methods of preserving food is pickling. This process involves placing vegetables or fruits in a sealed container with brine or vinegar. The fermentation that takes place changes the flavor and texture of the food, creating pickles, though technically only pickled cucumbers are referred to as “pickles.” Everything else has the word “pickled” before its name. So why do only cucumbers get this honor? Well, for starters, it’s one of the best parts of going to a deli. No corned beef or pastrami sandwich would be complete without one. On National Pickle Day, get your pucker on anyway you please.

Nothing makes us feel cozier than spending the day in our pajamas. That's why we love holidays that invite the whole family to enjoy this feeling together. But why wait for the hustle and bustle of the season when any day of the week will do.  At least that's the rationale behind National Family PJ Day.  A day spent in our jammies means we prioritize things like board games, brunch and extra time curled up together watching movies or reading books. This day is all the better because there are no expectations or traditions beyond hanging out together and keeping it casual. And if you're into matching jammies you might as well snap a few holiday photos so you can check that off your list.  Hey, you just started a trend and you're barely out of bed!

  • November 13, 2020 – World Kindness Day |Dear Santa Letter Week

Did You Know That Santa Has Real Helpers? Find Out What Happens To All Those Letters.

Welcome to November 13th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate changing the world with empathy and compassion.

The World Kindness Movement began in 1997 in Tokyo, Japan and today includes over 28 countries around the globe.  Projects include photo contests that capture moments of goodwill and generosity along with those that mirror the sustainable development goals outlined by the United Nations.  But you don’t have to be a formal member to inspire those around you.  There are far reaching consequences to simple acts of kindness that you can initiate in your everyday life.  On World Kindness Day celebrate making a difference where you stand and having the courage to inspire, engage and influence others with positivity and compassion.

Every year, children fill mail boxes with hundreds of thousands of letters addressed to Santa. Since Santa is pretty busy getting things ready for Christmas Eve, the United States Postal Service created a way to send responses to these kids: Operation Santa. While most letters ask for gifts, some ask for help for the kids or their families. Operation Santa passes these letters along to charities and organizations that send gifts in Santa's place. During Dear Santa Letter Week, spend time helping your kids write their own wish lists. And if you're able to help your local charities, rest assured that the folks at Operation Santa will be helping to make a child's wishes come true.

  • November 12, 2020 – National Chicken Soup For The Soul Day | National French Dip Day

Are You Ready For An American Throw Down? Who Makes The Best French Dip Sandwich?

Welcome to November 12th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate comfort food for the body and soul.

Some of the most inspiring stories come from everyday people just like us. That’s what inspired motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hanson to write the book Chicken Soup for the Soul, a collection of true stories they’d heard from people who’d attended their talks. The book was such a success that they published one after another. Their recipe for success was simple: stories about overcoming obstacles are more impactful coming from the people with real experiences. On National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day, nourish yourself with something that enriches your heart or share your story with someone in need.

The French Dip sandwich is not actually French but its origins present a good old American throw down.  Two Los Angeles restaurants take the credit for inventing the sandwich: Coles and Philippes.  Both feature thinly sliced beef on crusty French bread that is slathered with spicy mustard and dipped in au jus sauce. And that's where the stories become different.  Coles claims its French Dip appeared in 1908 when a sympathetic chef who gave his customer with sore gums a side of meat juice to soften the bread of his sandwich.  The much more palatable story comes from Philippes where the sandwich was apparently dropped in a pan with meat drippings and the lucky customer raved of its intense flavor. If this friendly competition makes your mouth water, celebrate National French Dip Day any way you please.
