  • November 11, 2020 – Veterans Day | National Sundae Day

    What's Your Favorite Sundae?

Welcome to November 11th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate ice cream bliss and our enduring love for Veterans.

When food critics list the best ice cream sundaes in America, one nearly always gets mentioned: the Bumpity Bliss sundae at Sanders Fine Chocolates in Rochester, Michigan. The base of this one-of-a-kind dessert is a Bumpy Cake—chocolate cake with two “bumps” of vanilla buttercream placed on top, then covered with fudge frosting. The cake is then topped with ice cream and hot fudge—chocolatey heaven. And lest you think that Sanders is a one-trick pony, they also invented the ice cream float back in the early 1900s. On National Sundae Day celebrate in style with a banana split, classic hot fudge, or something more adventurous.

Veterans Day always falls on November 11th to coincide with the ending of World War I.  Originally known as Armistice Day for the treaty that was signed on the 11th day of the 11th month in the 11th hour, this day has also been approved to be a day dedicated to the cause of world peace.  While Memorial Day commemorates all those who lost their lives in service to their country and Armed Forces Day honors those in active duty, Veterans Day encompasses all United States military veterans and does not change according to where it falls on the day of the week.  It’s a reminder of our admiration for those willing to pay the ultimate price in protection of our freedom.

  • November 10, 2020 – National Vanilla Cupcake Day | Marine Corps Birthday

Have You Heard Of The Special Cake Cutting Ceremony For The Marine Corps Birthday?

Welcome to November 10th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the sweet life and the military branch that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War.

These days everyone could use a little sweetness.  And what is sweeter than a personal sized vanilla cake with some buttercream and sprinkles? In fact the bakery known as Sprinkles tapped a trend that has continued to this day with their Los Angeles bakery that opened in 2005.  The first recipe for cupcakes appeared in 1796 in Amelia Simmons’ “American Cookery,” and little did she know that chef Candace Nelson would eventually open a cupcake ATM in 2012 and 31 Sprinkles bakeries from coast to coast.  On National Vanilla Cupcake Day it has never been easier to celebrate the sweet life.

After a few defeats at the hands of British forces, George Washington had requested troops that could fight on both land and sea. On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to create two Battalions of Marines to serve with the Continental Army and these men changed the course of the Revolutionary War. Their first major test came when they landed on hostile shores in the Bahamas and captured New Providence Island. As a result, Captain Samuel Nicholas became the first commissioned officer in the Continental Marines and is celebrated as the Marines first commandant. On the Marine Corps Birthday we celebrate those who are always loyal to each other, their country and their traditions.

  • November 9, 2020 – National Scrapple Day | National Roasting Month

Have You Ever Tried Scrapple For Breakfast? If Not Today Is The Day To Try Something New!

Welcome to November 9th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate adventures in the kitchen.

If you’re not from Philadelphia, you’ve likely never heard of Scrapple. This regional favorite was brought to Philly by German immigrants where it was popular with rural communities. Farmers butchered their hogs, and used most of the meat for sausages or bacon, but all of the remaining pig parts were made into scrapple. The traditional version was made only with meat, but American immigrants combined it with cornmeal or buckwheat, and formed it into a loaf. The loaf is sliced and fried, and typically served as a breakfast side dish. It’s National Scrapple Day, so why not try something different for breakfast. Go on, I dare you!

If cooking the Thanksgiving Meal is already stressing you out, one thing should ease your mind: roasting the turkey is the easiest part.  And if you're still not convinced, we are  giving you all month to practice as November is National Roasting Month.  This low and slow cooking method brings out flavor in meats and even vegetables and since it all goes together in one pan, you can prepare a delicious meal fast and let the oven do all the work. Start with meat or veggies and some simple seasonings such as parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Add salt and a layer of tin foil and your meal will be fork  tender in only a few hours.  The best part of roasting is the way your kitchen smells and the hardy meals will call your family to the table all on their own.  During National Roasting Month try this easy way to add coziness to your kitchen.

  • November 8, 2020 – National Cappuccino Day | National STEM/STEAM Day

What Puts The Steam In Your Day? If You're A Grownup It's Likely This Espresso Drink. But For The Kid In All Of Us Technology Really Revs Things Up!

Welcome to November 8th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate technology and all the ways it inspires us every day!

It’s not hard to imagine that the cappuccino we enjoy virtually everywhere today developed first in Italy.  The espresso drink made with steamed milk and topped with milk froth first appeared in Italian coffee houses in the early 1900s.  What may surprise you is that before then they were called kapuziner after the Capuchin monks who wore beige hooded robes that resemble the drink.  The Viennese kapuziner was made with whipped cream and cinnamon or chocolate shavings and appeared as early as the 1700s.  I owe a personal debt of gratitude to whoever decided to mix coffee with cream and on National Cappuccino Day I’m celebrating the genius who made it possible to make them in my own kitchen!

Science and technology are critical to our future. That’s why STEM and STEAM education have become increasingly popular. For those of you who don't know the terms, STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The A was added to incorporate Art for a more well rounded curriculum. Young children are curious by nature, so introducing them to science and technology early in life can make a huge difference in their development. Even if your child doesn't focus on a career in any of these fields, STEM and STEAM education can set them on a path towards success. On National STEM/STEAM Day, take time to inspire the little people in your life because they are the ones who will shape our future.

  • November 7, 2020 – National Play Outside Day | National Bison Day

It's Time To Head Outside and Play. And If You Happen To See Our National Mammal, Speak Softly!

Welcome to November 7th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate playing outside and a national mammal.

Hey Marlo, It’s National Play Outside Day and you’re actually here in Vegas. Does that mean you’re gonna go take a hike? Okay, I know you don’t like to be tracked down on the weekends, but no matter where you live, there’s no excuse to stay inside on the first Saturday of November.  Come rain or shine there are plenty of outdoor activities that are great for dusting off those mental cobwebs and taking a break from screen time.  Get outside, breathe some fresh air and if you throw in some playtime with family even better.  If we were in your neck of the woods we may even spot the other thing we are celebrating today, eh Marlo?

The majestic bison can weigh in at nearly 2000 pounds making it the largest land mammal in North America.  According to Native American legend, there was a great famine long ago and the chief of the Lakota tribe sent out scouts to hunt for food. They encountered the White Bison Calf Woman, who taught them religious rituals and told them that when she returned, harmony would be restored to the world. As she left, herds of bison surrounded the camps and the animal became an important part of tribal culture. Though the bison was nearly extinct by the late 1800s, today it can be found in all 50 states. In 2016, it was declared America’s National Mammal and on National Bison Day we celebrate this essential part of our nation's history.

  • November 6, 2020 – National Jersey Friday | National Nachos Day

What Goes On Your Perfect Stack Of Nachos?

Welcome to November 6th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the true colors of sports fandom and the origin of a perfect snack.

When it comes to sports uniforms clothes really do make the person. Try to imagine your favorite athlete in their rival team’s uniform. Probably gets you a little hot under the collar, right? Jerseys are a huge part of sports fandom, where people put their allegiances on display for the world to see and let their opponents know where they stand…even if it’s all in good fun. Although… Michigan fans would rather be covered in ants than be seen wearing ANYTHING with the words Ohio State on it. If you’ve got a favorite player, National Jersey Friday is the day to celebrate by wearing their number and letting the world see your true colors.

Ignacio Nacho Anaya was the host of The Victory Club in the early 1940s.  When the chef of the restaurant turned up missing one night, Ignacio hurried to the kitchen to whip up something for his favorite guests and  nachos have been a favorite snack ever since.  Though they started with humble chips, cheese and jalapenos, today’s recipes are inspired by almost every culture and cuisine. Not only can nachos feed a crowd, they can be a meal in themselves when piled high with any kind of protein and sauce. Try your favorite leftovers with melted cheese over chips and you are sure to make your culinary mark. On National Nachos Day celebrate this lightning fast meal that is always a crowd pleaser.

  • November 5, 2020 – National Doughnut Day | National Love Your Red Hair Day

Have You Noticed There's More Than One Doughnut Day? And Given That They Bring Folks Together, A Little Extra Celebration Seems Just Fine!

Welcome to November 5th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a bonus doughnut day and a recessive gene worth celebrating.

Hey Marlo, I know you didn’t plan this but today is another National Doughnut Day. And I’m not gonna look a gift carb in the mouth. Apparently people around the world love their doughnuts.  Take the folks at the Jewish Life Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, who landed in the Guinness Book of World records for tallest stack of donuts. As part of their 2018 Hanukkah celebration, they created a pyramid-shaped tower of a whopping 3,100 doughnuts, which involved a team of structural engineers, an architect and a crew of volunteers who worked in shifts for nearly 8 hours! The doughnuts were given to soup kitchens and homeless shelters throughout the city. Doughnuts always seem to inspire the spirit of giving.  Yeah, I think we need two days of celebrating that.

For the record I also did not create National Love Your Red Hair Day. The genetic trait that causes red hair is found in only two percent of the population, so those of us with natural red have no trouble standing out. If you have both red hair and blue eyes then you are in a 1 percent category and chances are you are also left handed. And while redheads have a reputation for being feisty and stubborn we are also natural born leaders.  This may have more to do with getting picked on or singled out in life and learning quickly to defend ourselves.  Which seems to have worked well for Prince Harry, Carol Burnett, Ron Howard and Lucille Ball.  On National Love Your Red Hair Day celebrate this unique trait and the bonus of standing out in a crowd.

  • November 4, 2020 – National Stress Awareness Day | National Candy Day

What Is Your Favorite Way To Unwind and Relax?

Welcome to November 4th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate taking a breath and a candy that went to war.

Okay, I’ll admit it: “I’m Stressed!”  And maybe it’s no accident that National Stress Awareness Day falls on the Wednesday after election Tuesday.  No matter how you voted yesterday, the lead up to this week has been stressful and because stress is the number one indicator of how long or how short your life will be, it’s time to take a serious look at what’s been eating you.  Like seriously!  Today is the day to take a walk, have a bath, call a friend, get a massage or simply take a breath.  It’s that important to get a game plan for how you will outwit stress in your life.

They say that necessity is the mother of invention and in the case of M&Ms candy, this phrase is certainly true.  It turns out that the best selling candy in the world was created in 1941 and during World War II, M&Ms were exclusively sold to the military. Their small size and candy coating made them the perfect candy for military rations: they were easy to transport and the candy coating prevented the chocolate from melting. When soldiers returned home, they were hooked and wanted more, so the Mars Company made them available to the general public. Soon other companies made a knockoff version and Mars had to mark its candy coated chocolates with the trademark M that we still see today. On National Candy Day, treat yourself to something to make your day a little sweeter.

  • November 3, 2020 – National Sandwich Day |National Gratitude Month

If You Had A Sandwich Named After You, What Would Be On It?

Welcome to November 3rd, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate star-struck sandwiches and the magic of gratitude.

If you’re famous, it’s a rare honor for a restaurant to name a sandwich after you. Especially if the sandwich is good. For example: The Leonardo DiCaprio sandwich from Lioni’s in New York is: Roast beef, American Cheese, mozzarella, bruschetta, stuffed peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, fried eggplant, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. The Adam Sandler sandwich from The Stage deli is: salmon, lettuce, sturgeon, onion, and tomato. And, of course, the Elvis Presley: Peanut butter, banana, and bacon.  Ok Marlo, if you had a sandwich what would it be? Marlo: Sharp cheddar cheese, slices of apple and raisins. Anna: that sounds delicious! If you’re a star in your own kitchen celebrate National Sandwich Day with your own celebrity creation.

Most people agree that the Thanksgiving meal is one they look forward to all year. And while the tradition of what's on the menu may vary from home to home, the secret ingredient that makes every meal delicious is  gratitude.  Perhaps you've noticed how counting your blessings makes everything in life appear sweeter, even when it's hard to see the silver lining.  When life goes off course try keeping an attitude of gratitude. It's not an essential cooking ingredient, but it is one of life's best kept secrets.  During National Gratitude Month, we invite you to watch as the things you're grateful for begin to multiply.

  • November 2, 2020 – National Deviled Egg Day |Movember

If You Think Taxes Are Outrageous Today, Be Glad There Is No Tax On Beards. Find Out What Started The Mustache Rage.

Welcome to November 2nd, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate kicking things up a notch and going over the top with our “mo’s”.

While lots of foods fall in and out of favor it appears that deviled eggs have a long history of success.  Even the Ancient Romans liked boiled eggs with spicy sauce as the opening act of their meal. And while the 13th century Spaniards began smashing the yolks as a filling, the term “deviling” didn’t appear until the 18th century.  This is when a little heat became associated with the devil.  I’m not sure if this was reverse psychology or someone’s version of a double dog dare, but a little paprika is hardly a walk on the dark side.  Today, folks bring this classic hors d'oeuvre back in vogue by adding wasabi or southwestern zest and a general devil may care attitude with heat level.  On National Deviled Egg Day celebrate by kicking up the spice any way you like it.

During the late 1800s, Peter the Great imposed a beard tax on his citizens. That's right! Men were charged an annual fee if they chose to grow out their whiskers.  This meant that peasants were charged every time they entered cities. Those who paid were allowed to keep their chin hair, but most men shaved to avoid the tax. As a result, extravagant mustaches became all the rage and were often paired with excessive sideburns. If you notice the men in your life sporting mustaches this month, it's because November is Movember, a time to raise awareness for men's health issues. And the only money changing hands is for charity, not for taxes.
