  • October 22, 2020 – National Color Day | National Make A Dog’s Day

What Is The Best Way To Spoil Your Pooch?

Welcome to October 22, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a pop of color and rewarding our true blue friends.

The human eye can see nearly 7,000,000 different shades of color. It’s one of the first things we notice when we process visual information and as humans we have a primal response to different colors. For example, purple is rare in nature, so when we see it, the color registers as something special. That’s why we use it for royalty and elegant things. Green reminds us of nature and peaceful, soothing things. White is technically the absence of color, so it reminds us of simplicity, which is why companies like Apple use it for their products to feel sleek and easy to use. On National Color Day, don’t be afraid to show your true colors.  You may just change the world around you.

There are lots of days that celebrate our furry friends but this one is all about the most loyal. For the dogs who have stood by our side through thick and thin today is all about them. It doesn't take much to please our pups: an extra long walk or a special treat would do, and what dogs crave most is quality time with their owners. Pet stores stock everything you need to pamper your pooch at just about every price point. And if you haven’t had a dog in a while, there are nearly 3.3 million shelter dogs seeking a forever home. This could be the day that you make a dog's biggest dream come true. On National Make a Dog’s Day go the extra mile for the pets that have been by your side come rain or shine.

If you are a fan of all things pumpkin, congratulations!  You have arrived at the best time of the year.  But if you’re already on pumpkin spice overload you may want to save yourself for the ultimate flavor combination the season has to offer: pumpkin cheesecake.  This beauty can even upset all the dessert standbys on theThanksgiving table.  What a perfect day to perfect your own recipe ahead of the holiday rush.  By November you’ll be a cheesecake expert and even if the pumpkin spice madness has already peaked, folks will be drawn like moths to a flame to your heavenly creation!

The smooth richness of cream cheese marries with creamy, spiced pumpkin, topped with just sweetened whipped cream. Oh I am so glad that National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day arrived today!  Why wait to be grateful?

    Marco…Polo!

Legend has it that when the famous explorer Marco Polo visited China in the late 13th Century, he was served pasta by Kublai Khan. He loved the dish so much that he brought it back to Italy when he returned home. Great story, but it’s probably false.  The truth remains, however, that Italians love their pasta. In fact they eat an average of 75 pounds of pasta per person every year. The second largest consumer may surprise you; sitting  just across the Mediterranean - Tunisia. People around the world love pasta so much that it’s only fitting to celebrate for an entire month. So for National Pasta Month we all say Buon appetito!

  • October 20, 2020 – National Caramel Month | National Youth Confidence Day

Is There Really More Than One Way To Say The Word "Caramel?" How In The World Did This Turn Into A Sticky Situation?!

Welcome to October 20, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate sweet rewards and the power of building up our youth.

I’ve got a surprise for you Marlo.  I know you have been super healthy lately, but are you aware that it’s National Caramel Month?  For those who don’t know this is Marlo’s favorite flavor.  And it’s absolutely amazing on popcorn, his favorite food.  In fact what doesn’t taste better with a drizzle of buttery caramel?  That’s why it’s a good idea to have some on hand for a sweet flourish over your latte or a fantastic finish to your desserts.  Did we mention it’s also National Dessert Month? Everyone could use an extra dose of sweetness right about now. So stock up and celebrate with National Caramel Month.

Stevland Judkins Morris was born on May 13, 1950, and went blind shortly after because of his premature birth. Despite his disability, he had a passion for music and by the age of 10 he had taught himself how to play the harmonica, piano, organ, and drums. Stevland played during church services and his talent impressed one fellow parishioner so much that the man introduced him to a friend named Berry Gordy—the president of Motown records. Gordy took the boy under his wing and helped turn him into the star we know today as… Stevie Wonder. Sometimes all it takes to make a difference in a child’s life is a little encouragement. Not every kid will grow up to be famous, but they’ve got a better chance at success if you inspire them to be themselves. On National Youth Confidence Day, it’s a good day to be the adult you needed when you were a kid.

  • October 19, 2020 – National Seafood Bisque Day | International Gin And Tonic Day

"These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things," Said The Co-Host Of The National Daily.

Welcome to October 19, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the classically smooth and delicious.

If you are tuned into the foodie world at all then you will appreciate the term “mouth feel.” That’s anything that pleases the mouth beyond merely the taste buds and today we are celebrating something I find truly special: seafood bisque.  This rich, creamy mouth pleasing soup has been around for centuries and probably originated in France in the Bay of Biscay where seafood was plentiful.  But that’s not exactly how bisque got its name. For that we take a clue from how it's cooked.  First the seafood shells are sauteed with onions, celery and carrots then simmered in wine or broth with aromatic herbs.  This makes it “bis” “cuit” for twice cooked flavor  and by the time the seafood and cream are added an unparalleled flavor has developed.  On National Seafood Bisque Day make your mouth happy with this classic seafood concoction.

The British Empire spanned the globe in the mid 1800s and one of its most valuable colonies was in India. England was able to conquer so much of the world because of its powerful army and navy. But one thing its military couldn’t fight was malaria. The disease had long been eradicated in Europe, but in India’s tropical climate, malaria was still a health concern. The Brits stationed in India learned that quinine powder could help treat and prevent the disease. However, the taste was so bitter that no one wanted to take it. Then someone had the idea to mix it with soda water and sugar to make it more palatable, creating what became known as “tonic water.” Soon, colonists began mixing this tonic with a British favorite—gin—and the famous cocktail was born. On International Gin and Tonic Day, enjoy a classic libation that still goes down as smooth as British ingenuity.

  • October 18, 2020 – National Chocolate Cupcake Day | National No Beard Day

Who Knew That Shaving Your Beard Could Save Your Life?

Welcome to October 18, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a special dessert and bracing your face to conquer the world.

Hey Marlo, guess what today is? National Chocolate Cup Cake Day?  Right.  What a perfect celebration food! Who wouldn’t love a delicious, bite sized chocolate cake?  With or without frosting these gooey morsels can satisfy any chocolate lover who might be celebrating, oh, I don’t know a special occasion… Yep!  100 percent agree. Cupcakes have been around since the late 18th century when they were baked in individual ramekins or small coffee and tea cups and called patty cakes or fairy cakes.  On National Chocolate Cupcake Day bake up a batch for your own celebration, even if it's a party of one.  Happy Birthday, Anna.  Oh you remembered!

Alexander the Great is considered one of the most powerful rulers in human history. But legend has it that he also helped to popularize a custom that lives on to this day—men shaving their faces. In 331 B.C., Alexander lost a key battle in which he witnessed Persian soldiers grabbing his men by their beards and holding them in place in order to stab the men with spears. Before they fought the Persian army again, he ordered his troops to shave their beards. His army won the next battle and he went on to conquer the Persian Empire and control the largest empire in the world. You may find yourself grumbling as you’re shaving and getting ready for work today on National No Beard Day. But just think—nicking yourself with that razor isn’t as bad as getting poked with a spear.

  • October 17, 2020 – National Mulligan Day | Spinach Lovers Month

Have You Ever Wished For A Do-Over In Life? Today Is Your Lucky Day!

Welcome to October 17, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate second chances and a superfood do over.

A mulligan is a do over or chance to hit the reset button.  In golf it’s a term that means taking a second shot if things don’t go according to plan.  No one is exactly sure which Mulligan gave us this term whether it was David Mulligan from Canada, John “Buddy” Mulligan from New Jersey or Thomas Mulligan from Ireland. All three were passionate about the game of golf and all three knew the value of blowing off a bad shot.  If you feel like taking a mulligan from this entire year, start today.  It’s never too late to reframe your thinking with a fresh perspective and the good news is this: there are still a few months to explore doing just that. On National Mulligan Day tee up a new outlook and give yourself a well-deserved break.

October is Spinach Lovers Month and when I think of spinach, I think of Popeye. When he ate a can of spinach, he practically turned into a superhero because of all the vitamins in it. Popeye cartoons made the vegetable so popular in the 1930s that sales shot up 33%. But here’s the interesting part: The reason everyone thought spinach was such a superfood was because of a misplaced decimal. A scientific study told everyone that there were 35 milligrams of iron per serving, but it’s actually only 3.5. That doesn’t mean spinach isn’t good for you, but it does mean you’re not going to develop super strength just because you eat some. I guess that scientists needed a mulligan too.

  • October 16, 2020 – National Dictionary Day | National Sports Day

This Rebel Of Words Took 27 Years To Complete His Best Known Work. But He Didn't Stop There!

Welcome to October 16, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate rebels with a cause and a healthy expression of our competitive spirit.

American Noah Webster is best known for publishing A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language in 1806.  His belief that the English spelling rules were unnecessarily complicated, led him to compile the American English spellings, which we take for granted today until we run across words such as “color” with an extra ‘u’ or center with an ‘re’ ending.  This task took 27 years to complete and required Webster to learn twenty-six languages, including Old English, German, Greek, Latin, Italian, Spanish, French, Hebrew, Arabic, and Sanskrit. He also added American words such as “skunk” and “squash” that did not appear in British dictionaries. And he argued with the great minds of the day about the idea of climate change and his fierce opposition to slavery. On National Dictionary Day we celebrate the spirit of going against the grain with an original rebel of words.

Organized sports were introduced to the world at the first Olympic Games in Ancient Greece. The first events were based on training for war and hunting—races, wrestling, jumping, and javelin throwing. And that’s a good thing. Because it became a way for people to prove who was better and hash out differences without hurting one another with weapons. Sports are cathartic and bring people together. You can see it at most amateur and professional sporting events: Athletes scream and yell and try to beat their opponents, but when the game is over, they congratulate one another. They laugh. They shake hands and hug. Because in the end we’re all human and that’s what counts. On National Sports Day, celebrate the spirit of friendly competition!

  • October 15, 2020 – National Shawarma Day | National I Love Lucy Day

After A Long Day Of Fighting Crime What Tastes Better Than Shwarma?

Welcome to October 15, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate food that’s fit for a superhero and love at first sight. More after the break from guest host, Chris Cecot.

At the end of The Avengers, after the heroes had defeated Loki and his army in the Battle of New York, they were pretty beaten up. They’d saved the world, but they were exhausted and hungry. So Tony Stark took the team out to lunch—to get shawarma. He didn’t know what it was, but he wanted some. Shawarma is a Turkish dish made from thinly sliced meats stacked on vertical spits. Then the seasoned meats slowly rotate next to a heat source. The layers keep the meat tender and juicy and they’re shaved off for each serving and served on a pita with hummus, tahini, pickles, and vegetables. Sometimes the meat is lamb, sometimes it’s chicken, but it’s always delicious. National Shawarma Day is a perfect time to get yourself one of these scrumptious Middle Eastern favorites. Hey—if it’s good enough for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it’s good enough for you.

If your life ever feels like an episode of Job Switching, where Lucy has to beat the conveyor belt of candy by hiding them in her mouth, then chances are you've already fallen in love with Lucy.  This iconic television show first aired on October 15th, 1951 and audiences were in love at first sight.  That’s because the show featuring Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley was a program of firsts, including the first to be performed before a live studio audience.  In four of its six seasons, I Love Lucy was the most-watched TV show in the United States and to this day it still lands on TIME Magazine's list of top 100 shows. On National I Love Lucy Day, catch up on your favorite episodes and be grateful you don't have to learn the lesson of Job Switching.

  • October 14, 2020 – National Fossil Day | National Dessert Day

What Is The Strangest Fossil Ever Named? Today We Dig Up A Few Along With The Most Expensive Dessert.

Welcome to October 14, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate weird names and wild desserts.

The discovery of fossils is an ongoing treasure hunt and their discovery both inspires and informs us.  They often reveal missing links between our modern world and life on earth billions of years ago.  The best way to preserve this link is by naming them something that will stick in our minds instead of boring old Latin names that get left on a shelf.  Here are some of the more memorable. The fossil of a 15 million year old snake with giant teeth: Montypythonoides riversleighensis.  And how about the extinct moth named Carmenelectra shechisme.  Okay that guy was just dreaming.  On National Fossil Day dig up some cool facts of your own about the weird science that continues to teach us from the dust.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most expensive dessert in the world is The Frrrozen Haute Chocolate ice cream sundae from the restaurant Serendipity 3. This frozen dessert is made with a blend of the 14 priciest cocoas and 23-karat gold flakes.  It's served in a goblet lined with edible gold. But wait—there's more!  If you order this confection, you get to keep the goblet, the tennis bracelet that's wrapped around the base, and the gold spoon! And all for the low, low—I mean ridiculous price of $25,000! In case you're wondering, the previous record for the most expensive dessert was a mere $1,000. Talk about inflation! On National Dessert Day treat yourself to something delicious and don't be afraid to go over the top!

  • October 13, 2020 – National Train Your Brain Day | Navy Birthday

How Do You Get Your Brain In Shape?

Welcome to October 13, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate getting pumped and the birthday of a fighting spirit!

Today’s celebration is about pumping you up!  No, I’m not talking about your muscles girly man, I’m talking about that under used super organ between your ears. It’s estimated that we only use a small fraction of the true potential of our brains and if you need more motivation think about this. Everything you see in the world around you was created in someone’s head.  That means the 3 pounds of gray matter you now own was responsible for taking us out of the stone age into the age of computers and rockets.  So how much heavy lifting are you doing these days?  On National Train Your Brain Day get cracking! Even if it's only lifting a pencil to your favorite puzzle.

On October 13th, 1775, the Second Continental Congress formally established what became the United States Navy. The most famous of the American captains from that era, or any era, was John Paul Jones. In 1779, he engaged the 44-gun Royal Navy frigate Serapis. His ship was burning and sinking, but Jones refused to surrender to the British and uttered one of the most famous quotes ever: “I have not yet begun to fight.” And, it turns out, he hadn't. Three hours after he made this declaration, the British ship surrendered to him and Jones took command. Today is the Navy's Birthday and we celebrate the men and women who carry on Captain Jones’s fighting spirit to this day.
