  • October 12, 2020 – National Kick Butt Day | National Farmer’s Day

Have You Been Waiting All Year To Kick Some Butt? This Day Was Made Just For You!

Welcome to October 12, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate kicking butt in our homes and in the field.

If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines of life not achieving much of anything these days you’re not alone. Maybe it’s time for good pep talk and whether you need more focus or self confidence consider this day your wakeup call. Start writing that novel. Call that client you’ve been avoiding. Get off the couch and get to the gym. You’re never going to reach that goal until you start moving toward it! As the saying goes: The only place ‘success’ comes before ‘work’ is in the dictionary. On National Kick Butt Day, do just that. Hey folks, this is your butt calling, time to kick me into high gear.

Farmer’s Day has been celebrated since the mid 1800s and it's easy to see why.  These folks contribute to more than just the food on our table. From early on in history, farmers set the example for hard work and their products affect many industries from manufacturing to transportation.  For proof you can look to a host of products from leather goods to textiles and even ethanol in our gas tanks. These days it's more important than ever to support your local farmers by purchasing from markets and visiting restaurants that take pride in their farm to table menus.   On National Farmer’s Day, take time to appreciate a way of life that sustains us all.

  • October 11, 2020 – General Pulaski Memorial Day | National Roller Skating Month

Do You Still Have A Pair Of Roller Skates? If So You Could Be Skating Through The Whole Month!

Welcome to October 11, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate brave exits and entrances.

Many brave Americans fought in the Revolutionary War, but the colonists didn’t fight alone. Other European nations who were not fond of the British were willing to lend a helping hand. One of the most prominent was Polish General Casimir Pulaski. After being exiled from his homeland where he had fought against the invading Russian army, Pulaski made his way to Paris, where he met Benjamin Franklin, who recruited him for the war against Great Britain. In America, he became one of George Washington’s most valuable field commanders, winning key battles for the Continental Army. While trying to liberate Savannah, Georgia, he was fatally wounded, but not before saving hundreds of troops. On General Pulaski Memorial Day, we celebrate this brave hero who sacrificed his life to help start a country that wasn’t even his own.

In the mid 1700s, when inventor John Joseph Merlin rolled his way into a lavish London party wearing his newly invented roller skates, he literally crashed the party.  Sustaining only minor injuries, this guy really knew how to make an entrance. Since then roller skates have become a favorite pastime as we cruise to our favorite tunes in roller rinks and glide down sidewalks with the wind in our hair.  And while roller blades have taken their design place, nothing can compare to a brand new pair of roller skates and skate parties under the disco ball.  On National Roller Skating Month enjoy living the dream that John Joseph Merlin could only imagine.

  • October 10, 2020 – National Angel Food Cake Day | National Chess Day

Can A Competitive Pastime Inspire World Peace? At The Height Of The Cold War This Moment Will Certainly Be Remembered For It's Unifying Spirit!

Welcome to October 10, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate moments of heaven on earth and world peace.

Miracles by their very nature are mysterious and so is the origin of the angel food cake.  It is believed that in 1883 a recipe from India was gifted to a family that operated a quiet, picturesque boarding house along the Hudson River. The owner was a skilled cake maker who took her friend’s recipe and perfected it in secret, often baking only one cake at a time behind closed doors.  The lighter than air results became the favorite dessert of First Lady Lucy Webb Hayes, who was delighted by this curious confection from the East.  On National Angel Food Cake, enjoy the not so illusive cake which can be purchased in almost any store.  Though if you’re baking one at home, you may want to pray for a miracle.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union seemed to be invincible…at the game of chess. For decades, every single world championship was won by a Soviet player. When an American named Bobby Fischer made it to the championships in 1972, the whole world was watching to see what would happen. Fischer lost the first two matches to the reigning champ Boris Spassky and it looked like the streak would continue for the Soviets. Then Fischer staged one of the greatest comebacks in the history of competitive chess. His performance was so impressive that the crowd broke out into applause after his win. Even Spassky stood up and applauded. On National Chess Day, celebrate the ultimate game of strategy that can bring the world together.

  • October 9, 2020 – National Moldy Cheese Day | National Leif Erikson Day

Who In The World Thought To Try Mold On Cheese For The First Time?!

Welcome to October 9, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate explorers that prove that fortune favors the bold, even if you’ve never heard of them.

Hey Marlo, what do you think of when I say “Moldy Cheese?” Exactly! John? Chris? Ok, so it's unanimous: in the case of moldy cheese beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.  If those deep blue veins of penicillium sound more like medicine than mouth watering cheese you are not alone. Not everyone appreciates the nutty, saltiness of a well aged cheese. It’s believed that the first blue cheese known as Gorgonzola was discovered by accident in 879 AD.  That sounds plausible right?  But who was the brave soul that saw mold on cheese and decided to try it anyway?  This is proof that whatever doesn’t kill you could be delicious. On National Moldy Cheese Day savor the boldness of a Roquefort, Stilton or Brie, and maybe carry some breath mints for the sake of the wimps in your life.

We all know that America was discovered in 1492, right? Not true. The Viking Leif Erikson sailed across the Atlantic and found a new continent that he named Vinland. The settlement was in today’s Newfoundland. Unlike Columbus, he and his men only stayed for a few years then moved back to Europe. For centuries, no one knew that this had even happened until archaeologists uncovered an abandoned Norse village in Canada. Columbus gets the spotlight, but it was the Vikings who actually planted their flag in North America first. On National Leif Erikson Day, we celebrate this brave explorer who paved the way for others to discover more of the world.

  • October 8, 2020 – National Pierogi Day | National Fluffernutter Day

Leave It To Chris To Find A Good Pierogi Story...

Welcome to October 8, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate legendary dumplings and sandwiches that make history. More after the break from guest host, Chris Cecot.

On July 23, 2014, one of Pittsburgh’s most beloved athletes came out of retirement. The legendary Potato Pete. One of the great thrills of any Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game is the world famous Great Pierogi Race, but on this fateful day, it looked as if the race would have to be cancelled when Cheese Chester broke his foot. When Pete stepped out onto the field  to take his place the crowd went wild. The race was on. For the next several weeks, Pete filled in for the ailing Chester and won 16 races in a row. But the celebration was short-lived. After being caught for cheating, Pete was kicked out of the competition and is currently locked in a freezer. Sad times indeed. On National Pierogi Day, race to the store and try some of these delicious Polish dumplings.

The history of the Fluffernutter sandwich may seem like pure fluff, but today we sort out the sticky dilemma of who created it first. The story began with the great, great, great grandchildren of Paul Revere: Emma and Armory Curtis of Melrose, MA.  In the early 1900s Amory cooked up  a sticky spread they called Snowflake Marshmallow Creme, and while other companies made similar products, Emma had a flash of marketing genius.  She created the recipe for a peanut butter and marshmallow cream sandwich that was published in the paper, and by 1915 Snowflake was selling nationwide.  During World War I, while meat was being rationed the sandwich was used as a source of protein, and became known as the Liberty Sandwich. On National Fluffernutter Day try a bite of history, that's more than just a little fluff.

  • October 7, 2020 – National LED Light Day | National Chocolate Covered Pretzel Day

How Can Something So Simple Have Been Around For Almost 500 Years?

Welcome to October 7, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the small and simple inventions that have a big impact.

The Nobel Prize in Physics was won on October 7, 2014 for developing blue light emitting diodes.  What’s so significant about that you ask? Apparently, the shorter wavelength of the color blue was the trickiest one to reproduce but with it the white LED light was born.  Today we take for granted the brightness of this bulb which is used to save energy and to create a more consistent light that is comforting to our eyes and more appealing to our emotions. Add to that the longer lasting bulbs for less waste and fewer carbon emissions and it's easy to see why this discovery is a clear winner!  On National LED Light Day we celebrate the big impact of small waves.

Pretzels have been around since the 6th Century, when they were invented by a Catholic monk, but it took over 900 years before someone gave them an upgrade. In 1544, a pretzel baker named Herr Franz Joseph Leibniz from Hamburg, Germany, went to the chocolatier next door and they combined their products. And so was born the chocolate covered pretzel. Bummer for the guy who made the chocolate since his name seems to have been lost to history. But we do know that decades later, Max Rumpolt published a recipe for this treat. Even without a recipe it seems pretty simple: Take a pretzel. Dip it in chocolate. The end. But what do I know? On National Chocolate Covered Pretzel Day you can celebrate by making your own simply satisfying treats!

  • October 6, 2020 – National Coaches Day | National Mad Hatter Day

Who Is Your Favorite Coach Of All Time? It's All About Celebrating The People Who Make A Difference!

Welcome to October 6, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the role models who help us be our best and give us permission to go a little batty.

As coach of the Green Bay Packers, Vince Lombardi won the NFL championship 5 out of 7 years, including the first two Super Bowls. His coaching style not only transformed his team, but also the entire coaching profession. Every day, coaches around the world encourage people to be the best that they can be, whether it's our sports career or even personal growth. These men and women lead people to strive for more both mentally and physically. On National Coaches Day we celebrate these leaders, both amateur and professional, who guide us through good times and bad and teach us to keep trying no matter the outcome. As Coach Lombardi said:  It’s not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.

In the middle of Alice's trip through Wonderland, she stopped for a tea party hosted by the Hatter. Yes, that's right. The character's name isn't the Mad Hatter, though that's how we all know him. The phrase mad as a hatter was  popular at the time and since the character was a bit crazy, the name stuck. As for the phrase itself, hat makers in the 1800s used mercury to manufacture felt hats. Prolonged exposure to this chemical led to mercury poisoning, which caused irritability, memory loss, and slurred speech…all of which applied to the fictional host of the tea party in Wonderland. On National Mad Hatter Day, bust out some silly hats and have yourself a spot of tea.

  • October 5, 2020 – National Get Funky Day | National Do Something Nice Day

How Do You Express Your Inner Funkadelic?

Welcome to October 5, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the best way to improve your day from getting funky to being nice.

Funk is a musical genre known for its rhythm and bass, but the word funk literally means “bad odor.” So why would anyone pick such a stinky name for such fun music? Because when musicians wanted their bandmates to really get groovy, they’d say “Put some stank on it!” Funk is the kind of music that can make even the biggest wallflowers get out on the dance floor. So when someone tells you to get funky, they’re not telling you to stop taking showers, they want you to have fun! On National Get Funky Day do something to make yourself happy: wear some cool clothes and definitely crank up some funky tunes by bands like Parliament Funkadelic. Get your groove on!

You may not be aware of how your choices add up, but doing something nice can have a far reaching ripple effect.  For inspiration, consider the story of a young man from South Carolina with big dreams and humble beginnings.  Though he never aspired to be a superhero, young Chadwick Boseman had a talent for acting. When that talent led him to a chance at attending Oxford University, the only obstacle was the immense tuition. Enter Denzel Washington.  Though the two had never met, the benefactor paid for Chads tuition and his acting career began. That career ended much too soon, but left a legacy of outstanding performances as some of history's greatest role models. On National Do Something Nice Day celebrate the ripple effect that even a small act of kindness can create.

  • October 4, 2020 – National Vodka Day | National Taco Day

Did You Know That The First Tacos Were Actually Explosive?

Welcome to October 4, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate and a little water and a small bite with an explosive start.

When you think of vodka you probably think of it as Russian drink.  And that’s because of its slavic pronunciation of the diminutive for “voda” meaning “little water.”  While it appeared in Poland and Russia in the late 14th century the origins likely trace to the liquor known as aqua vitae or water of life.  According to a legend, around 1430, a monk named Isidore from a monastery inside the Moscow Kremlin made a recipe of the first Russian vodka. His creation became known as the "bread wine” or “burning wine” and the drink still lives up to its name with more than 30 percent alcohol content.  On National Vodka Day, celebrate with your own favorite cocktail though you may want to cut this “little water” with a little “something something.”

One of America’s most popular foods got its start in Mexican silver mines. In the 1700s, miners South of the border would roll gunpowder in pieces of paper and insert them into the rock, as an inexpensive alternative to dynamite. They called these small charges tacos. So when the workers started bringing their lunches—meats and cheeses rolled in tortillas— they referred to them by the same name they used for the explosive charges. The taco came to the United States when Mexican immigrants arrived to work on the railroad or in the mines. Since then, the food has become a favorite and though it may be spicy, it's not nearly as explosive as it was in the beginning. National Taco Day doesn't fall on a Tuesday this year, but now you have an excuse to enjoy tacos two times this week!

  • October 3, 2020 – National Boyfriend Day | National Techies Day

Is Your Boyfriend A Techie? If So You Can Celebrate Two Days In One!

Welcome to October 3, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate all things tech and sing “Let’s Hear it For the Boy.”

When you’re in head over heels in love, there’s a childlike giddiness that comes along with the feeling. Maybe that’s why most people, no matter their age, refer to their significant others as boyfriends or girlfriends. Today we celebrate one half of that equation: our Boyfriends. When they’re at their best, they can be your perfect complement. They share adventures with you, give you a shoulder to cry on, and they make you laugh when you’re having a bad day. Maybe your boyfriend will even curl up on the couch with you and watch The Notebook for the 75th time without complaining. Okay, maybe that last one is a stretch. On National Boyfriend Day, do something that is just for them and maybe tomorrow they will join you for The Notebook.

Today is one of my favorite celebrations, National Techies Day!  As the founder of National Day Calendar and the Guru of Geek this day is my perfect mashup.  It's all about inspiring the next generation of students to embrace a career in tech and these days, almost every field you can imagine is affected by great advances in technology.  According to a report by the Economic Institute in California, for every high-tech job, four more jobs are created. That's a lot of economic boost driven by one industry. No matter what drives you, it's a good time to invest in learning something new about the ways that technology is affecting your area of expertise.  On National Techies Day boost your IQ for tech and don't be afraid to embrace your inner geek.
