Does Your Car Have A Pet Name? Chances Are Good That You Take Better Care Of It If It Does!

Welcome to October 2, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate our favorite rides and communication that goes beyond words.

If you’ve ever named your car then you are not alone.  Movies and TV shows give cars top billing in everything from Herbie the Love Bug to Kit from Knight Rider and Smokey in Smokey and the Bandit.  But perhaps the most loved car in today’s world is Lightning McQueen from the movie Cars. An animated feature film that banks on our natural affinity to consider our car as something more human than machine is pure marketing genius. And if you’ve never given it much thought, maybe naming your car will inspire you to give it some extra TLC. On National Name Your Car Day consider man’s other best friend, and keep your engine purring.

By nature, we’re hardwired to transmit information to one another, even if we aren't speaking. From eye movement, hand gestures to crossing legs, everything communicates to the people around us. While these nonverbals can help us in everyday life, there are people who make a career out of reading body language. Espionage relies heavily on observing unconscious ticks as experts look for things as simple as scrunching one's nose or licking one's lips, which are tells that can give you away. One spy was caught simply because of the way he held a bouquet of flowers! You may not need to save the world, but you can become more skilled at what someone's thinking or feeling by the way they carry themselves on National Body Language Day.

  • October 1, 2020 – National Fire Pup Day | National Hair Day

What Does Your Do Say About You?

Welcome to October 1, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate being spotted and noticed for our “do.”

The Dalmation dog has a long history of being known as a fire pup.  This goes back to the early 1700s when fire trucks were actually horse drawn carriages.  The dogs were not only extremely agile they had a natural affinity with horses, and they were trained to run alongside the carriage. While other dogs are just as heroic, Dalmations have one more feature that makes them, well, easy to spot. On National Fire Pup Day we celebrate these canine wonders who continue to inspire fire safety and the boundless energy of their most famous job.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… there was a woman with perfect hair. Think about it. Who has more recognizable locks in the whole universe than Princess Leia? We all have bad hair days, but somehow she did not. Dashing around from battle to battle, her hairstyles were always impeccable and iconic. As soon as you see someone with buns on either side of their head, you immediately know whose hair they’re emulating. And here on earth, there are lots more ways to get yourself noticed. On National Hair Day, you may not create a trend setting style for generations of adoring fans, but you can always try something new.

  • September 30, 2020 – National Hot Mulled Cider Day | National Chewing Gum Day

Did You Know That Chewing Gum Has Been Around For 9000 Years? But Only William Wrigley Thought To Mail A Piece To Everyone In The Phone Book!

Welcome to September 30, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a Fall ritual and an old school way of freshening your breath.

Hey Marlo, Wassail!  It’s an old Norse expression that literally means “be you healthy." Wassailing was an old South English drinking ritual of warming cider with spices and other ingredients to ensure a good harvest of cider apples for the following year.  Now that’s thinking ahead. In ancient Roman times they mulled wine in the same way.  Now that sounds like a good excuse for a drinking game. There are lots of recipes for hot mulled cider that include orange peel, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.  Now that sounds like a recipe to chase away the cold.  On Hot Mulled Cider Day, brew up your own favorite recipe and drink to your health!

While chewing gum may seem like  a modern invention, it’s actually been around for 9,000 years. The ancient Aztecs chewed something called chicle although they had to follow certain rules. Children and unmarried women could chew it in public, but everyone else had to chew it at home. Chicle became the main ingredient in chewing gum in the mid 1800s, but it wasn't until the early 1900s that gum became popular. That's when William Wrigley Jr. launched an all-out campaign, mailing free samples of his gum to every person in the phonebook; a move that apparently paid off big. On National Chewing Gum Day, celebrate the freedom to chew wherever you please, though keeping it quiet is still appreciated.

  • September 29, 2020 – VFW Day | National Coffee Day

If You Are A Coffee Lover We Bet You Celebrate This Day All Year Round! What Is Your Favorite Cup Of Joe?

Welcome to September 29, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate Veterans of Foreign Wars and a world traveled bean.

The VFW was founded in 1914 by veterans of the Spanish American War and soldiers who had served in the Philippines. The group was created to secure benefits and medical treatment for sick and wounded veterans. At the time, soldiers returning home from duty had no Veterans Administration care or pensions. The VFW also enabled veterans to help each other transition from the battlefield to normal life. The organization’s motto is “No one does more for Veterans,” and it’s easy to see why. No one understands a soldier better than someone else who has served in the military. But the VFW helps more than vets. The individual VFW posts play big roles in their communities through fundraising and community service. On VFW Day, find out more about how you can honor the dead by helping the living.

Coffee lovers rejoice today, although most of them celebrate all year round. While fans go to great lengths for their morning cup, the brewing of coffee began in the 15th century, when Sufi monks prepared it in much the same way.  The drink caused a buzz with traders in this region, who brought coffee back to their native Ethiopia. A legend also tells of Baba Budan smuggling coffee seeds out of the Middle East by strapping them to his chest. His seedlings took root in India.  Today most coffee is grown in Brazil though production takes place in over 50 countries worldwide.  This variety is the spice of life for true connoisseurs, who know that flavor is enhanced by everything from soil to elevation.  On National Coffee Day enjoy a good cup of joe and savor the history of a world traveled bean.

  • September 28, 2020 – National Piano Month | National Good Neighbor Day

These Days We Could All Use A Good Neighbor. How Do You Make A Difference In Your Neck Of The Woods?

Welcome to September 28, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate tickling the ivories and the folks on the porch next door.

Before the piano arrived on the scene, the most popular keyboard instrument was the harpsichord. It made beautiful music, but its volume could not be varied while playing. Composers and musicians wanted an instrument with the ability for more controlled expression. This led Bartolomeo Cristofori to create an instrument that allowed musicians to alter volume and tone with the force of one’s fingers. He called it the piano. Well, technically he didn’t name it the “piano.” The original name was much longer. We’ll spare you the Italian name, but it translates to “soft and loud keyboard instrument.” In September, we celebrate National Piano Month, and thank Mr. Cristofori for an instrument that has given us some of the most beautiful songs ever written, in every genre from Classical to Rock. We also give a special shoutout to whoever decided to shorten the name.

In the early 1970s, National Good Neighbor Day was created by Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana.  What began as an effort to build goodwill in our communities, became a Presidential Proclamation in 1978, when Jimmy Carter said: “As our Nation struggles to build friendship among the peoples of this world, we are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. For most of us, this sense of community is nurtured and expressed in our neighborhoods where we give each other an opportunity to share and feel part of a larger family…” On National Good Neighbor Day celebrate the spirit of friendship that has far reaching consequences.

  • September 27, 2020 – National Scarf Day | National Chocolate Milk Day

No Matter What The Weather Is Like In Your Neck Of The Woods, A Scarf Has Got You Covered!

Welcome to September 27, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate things that comfort the body and the soul.

Scarves are a wonderful way to dress up any outfit.  They can also brighten up the gloom of fall and winter as they cozy up to our necks and keep us warm. The first scarves depicted in fashion are found in ancient Egypt, where Queen Nefertiti wore a tightly woven scarf beneath her conical headdress.  Military ranks were often marked with scarves of varying value from expensive silk to lowly cotton.  But our love for scarves as a fashion statement can be traced to the house of Hermes in the 19th century. Making use of the beautiful patterned fabrics from China and India, Hermes designed the first ready-to-wear graphic silk scarf in 1837. When it caught the eye of Queen Victoria and became a part of her iconic look, scarves were quickly embraced in Europe and America as the essence of chic.  On National Scarf Day, enjoy the big impact of a small strip of fabric whether it's chic or more like a piece of your favorite comfy blanket.

While hot chocolate has been around in one form or another for thousands of years, it’s believed that chocolate milk came from 17th century Jamaica.  Sir Hans Sloane, an Irish botanist was given a post here, to serve an English Duke.  While mixing with the locals, he discovered a drink made of cocoa and water, that he described as nauseating. By adding milk instead of water he created a much smoother concoction that he later brought to apothecaries in Europe, where they used it as a medicine.  And while chocolate milk may not exactly be a health food, on National Chocolate Milk Day we remind you that some foods feed your body, while others feed your soul.

  • September 26, 2020 – National Ghost Hunting Day | National Pancake Day

Do You Believe In Ghosts? How About A Good Breakfast? Check Out How We Are Celebrating Both!

Welcome to September 26, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate spooky pursuits and a thousand year old breakfast.

Who you gonna call? The Warrens. Let me explain... As a child, Ed Warren grew up in a haunted house. His future wife Lorraine realized that she had clairvoyant abilities. When they married, the two became world-renowned paranormal investigators, helping people with hauntings and supernatural phenomena. Among their most famous cases were Annabelle, a possessed doll, and their investigation of The Amityville Horror. They became so well-known that Ed even became recognized by the Catholic Church as a demonologist. The Warrens’ story has inspired amateur ghost hunters around the world to seek out haunted houses, searching for signs of spiritual activity. You may not be a believer but on National Ghost Hunting Day, there’s a whole lot of videos online that may just change your mind.

Today we celebrate a 30,000 year old breakfast food, the pancake.  That’s right, the Stone Age folks were eating pancakes and scientists even found pancakes in the stomach of Otzi the Iceman, who dates back 5,300 years!   You would think after all this time we would be tired of one food, but pancakes are loved around the world.  Most cultures have some variation, although not all of them are for breakfast.  You have probably heard of hot cakes or johnnycakes, but they're also called crepes, latkes and blinis.  You get the picture. Even Shakespeare wrote about pancakes. On National Pancake Day enjoy them any way you please.  Flat and delicious or stacked mile high, everyone loves a flapjack.

  • September 25, 2020 – National One-Hit Wonder Day | National Comic Book Day

    What's Your Favorite One-Hit Wonder?

Welcome to September 25, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate heroes both sung and unsung.

The phenomenon known as a one-hit wonder may sound sad for the bands who produced these iconic flashes in the pan, but consider this: songs that make us burst out singing or dancing when they come on the radio, or that stick in our head long after the event or the memory which we tie them to has faded have brought joy to millions around the globe for decades.  That’s a pretty significant impact. If you ask Antonio Romero Mange how it felt to hit number one in 1993 with Macarena, his own words say it all: "We have no words to thank everyone...we're just two guys from a small town, from very humble families, who lost our parents very young, we've worked so hard, and to see ourselves here?" We agree Antonio - amazing! On National One-Hit Wonder Day consider the lifelong impact of one humble song that keeps us bumping throughout the ages.

Every comic book fan knows Stan Lee. But you may not have heard of his partner, Jack Kirby. Together the pair created Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and The X-Men. Stan was the writer, and Jack was the artist. He had been working in comics years before the two teamed up, creating his most famous character as World War II broke out. Have you ever seen the comic book cover where Captain America is punching Hitler in the face? Jack drew that. And shortly after, he was drafted by the Army and assigned as a scout because he was able to quickly draw reconnaissance maps. After returning to the United States, Jack met Stan Lee and the rest is history. On National Comic Book Day, read some comic books or learn about the men and women behind the heroes, because sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

  • September 24, 2020 – National Punctuation Day | National Cherries Jubilee Day

What Dessert Sets Your Heart On Fire?

Welcome to September 24, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate perfect endings to sentences and a meal.

    Anna: Good morning, Marlo?

Marlo: I don’t understand. Why are you asking me?

Anna: I’m just reading the script!

Marlo: I have no idea what’s going on right now.

John: Uh, Anna, I think the punctuation is all messed up on the scripts.

Anna: Ohhhh. That’s why I sounded like a crazy person.

Marlo: You mean as opposed to every other time?

Anna: Haha. Hilarious, Marlo. Well, today is National Punctuation Day and I think that shows how big a deal it is to use proper punctuation.

    Marlo: Period.

    John: Without question.

    Anna: Ugh.

Nothing says celebration like the word jubilee, but just how did this word get attached to the flaming cherry dessert?  For that story we look to renowned chef and dessert maker Auguste Escoffier.  In honor of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee event, the chef combined her love of cherries with a simple syrup and warm brandy which he lit on fire for a dramatic finish.  Escoffier had a knack for making the ladies feel special and designed the dessert Peach Melba for Nellie Melba and a macaroon for Sarah Bernhardt bearing her name. On National Cherries Jubilee Day, you don't have to light things on fire to celebrate someone.  But knowing the way to their heart with dessert works every time.

  • September 23, 2020 – National Checkers Day And Dogs in Politics Day | National Great American Pot Pie Day

You May Have Heard Of Checkers The Presidential Pooch, But Can You Name Some Of The Stranger White House Pets?

Welcome to September 23, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate presidential pooches and great American pie.

In 1952, Richard Nixon ran as Dwight Eisenhower’s Vice President and was accused of illegally receiving money and gifts. He told his critics that if they found that he’d done anything wrong he would return everything except for one thing—a black and white Cocker Spaniel named Checkers. Even politicians have a soft spot for animals. Many presidents have had dogs or cats while in the White House, but there were also some truly strange pets. Herbert Hoover owned an opossum. Calvin Coolidge had a pet raccoon that he walked on a leash. And Theodore Roosevelt had snakes, dogs, cats, a badger, birds, guinea pigs, and even a pony. On National Checkers Day And Dogs In Politics Day, we celebrate presidential pooches, and remember that there aren’t just people living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

While pot pies have been around since ancient Rome, today we celebrate our love of this perfect comfort food that we find truly American.  Almost every culture has a recipe for two baked crusts with a savory filling, but many of these don't exist in our culture today, and thankfully so.  It may seem crazy that anyone would enjoy a live bird that bursts out of a pie crust at the dinner table, but this Roman tradition still existed in 16th century England, which is exactly why we beat a hasty retreat to the New World.  All kidding aside, we take pride in our rich heritage of hearty stews baked into flaky crust that make many Americans nostalgic.  On National Great American Pot Pie Day  enjoy this delicious national treasure.
