  • July 4, 2020 – Independence Day | National Barbecued Spareribs Day

    Transcript from July 4th

Welcome to July 4th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate the spirit of freedom and picking up the spare.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

While most Americans gather to enjoy great food and fireworks and some form of party decked in out in red, white and blue, it’s interesting to know that this holiday has been celebrated in much the same way for nearly 250 years. The first anniversary of our adopting the Declaration of Independence included a 13-gun salute, one for each State of the Union, along with parades, fireworks, speeches and prayers.  The next year George Washington issued double rations of rum and Benjamin Franklin and John Adams hosted a party in Paris with fellow Americans. But the most unusual celebration included a mock-funeral for George the III, symbolizing the end of the monarch’s hold on America.  No matter how you celebrate Independence Day remember you are in good company and a long line of revelers who continue to believe in the Spirit of Freedom.

Today we also celebrate the food that makes grownups reach for a little kid cover up - the barbecued spare rib. While everyone has their own take on sauces and rubs, Kansas City, Missouri, is considered the BBQ capital of the world, with restaurants like Arthur Bryant’s and Jack Stack drawing visitors from around the globe. And if you can’t make it there, don’t stress.  Plenty of us boast our own secret sauce that makes wearing a bib worth all the “ribbing.” On National Barbecued Spareribs Day celebrate the freedom of the finger food that makes a beautiful mess.

  • July 3, 2020 – National Fried Clam Day | National Eat Your Beans Day

    Transcript for July 3rd

Welcome to July 3rd, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate he or she, who laughs last.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

On National Fried Clam Day we celebrate a Mom and Pop business with humble beginnings. For Chubby and Bessie Woodman it all started with a small concession stand on Main Street in Essex, Massachusetts.  They sold groceries, homemade potato chips and fresh-dug clams on weekends, and while business wasn’t great everything changed on July 3rd, 1916.  That day a local fisherman noticed the couple’s business was slow and joked that they should fry up some clams.  Chubby wasn’t amused, but he took up the dare and the very next day a 4th of July crowd went crazy for this new seafood sensation! A lifetime of success followed for the Woodmans, who laughed all the way to the bank.  On National Fried Clam Day celebrate the couple who made history and more than a few clams.

Beans, beans, musical fruit...  Okay, that’s not exactly scientific, but who doesn’t know that beans are an excellent source of fiber and minerals? And with nearly 40,000 varieties, there are endless ways to enjoy them.

Marlo: Did you say 40 Thousand?!

Anna: Yeah, but they aren’t all edible.

Marlo: I think they’re only edible when you bake them up.

Anna: So, you’re not a fan of hummus?

    Marlo: Well, that’s ok…

    Anna: How about edamame?

Marlo: Yeah, I see your point.

Anna: Refried, bean casserole, bean salad, lima beans...

    Marlo: Ah, payback.

Anna: ...chili beans, pork and beans, pinto beans...

  • July 2, 2020 – National Hot Dog Month | National Anisette Day

    Transcript for July 2nd

Welcome to July 2nd, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate the tried and true along with something completely different.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Coney Island, New York is home to Nathan’s, the world’s most famous hotdog place. It opened for business in 1916 and kicked off an event that still happens every year. Nathan’s July 4th hotdog eating contest draws a crowd from around the world and even features an old-time carnival barker, who announces each contestant as if they were prizefighters. The reigning champion is Joey Chestnut from Kentucky, who holds the world record for eating 74 hotdogs in just 10 minutes! During National Hot Dog Month celebrate this All-American favorite, and if anyone gives you grief for eating for more than one, just tell ‘em you’re training for Coney Island.

If you are a fan of black jelly beans you will love the flavor of today’s celebration National Anisette Day.  This licorice flavored liqueur gets its notable taste from aniseed and enjoys most of its popularity in Spain, Italy, Portugal, and France.  It is also a bit sweeter than most other liqueurs which makes sense given its history as a medical concoction.  Apparently, even the ancient Egyptians believed that a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down.  And if that’s not appealing to your taste in a cocktail, why not try it in coffee or cookies or cake.  National Anisette Day is a great excuse to celebrate trying something new!

  • July 1, 2020 – National Postage Stamp Day | National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day

    Transcript for July 1st

Welcome to July 1st, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate uncommon tastes in hobbies and dessert.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

The United States issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847, although a letter could still be mailed without one.  It was up to the recipient to pay for delivery upon receipt and for some reason by 1855 prepaying for postage through stamps became mandatory.  Today collectors enjoy this snippet of history and the stories they tell of art and pop culture.  And if you think this “art collection” cant’ fetch a high price, consider the most expensive stamp ever sold at auction: the British Guiana One-Cent Magenta, which went for a mere 9.5 million dollars! On National Postage Stamp Day you might want to start collecting one of the most valuable pieces of paper by weight.

Ice cream is delicious, but if you’re like me you may find yourself making the same old choice.  On National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day it’s time to throw caution to the wind and try out something new. How about Curry Mint? Or Brown Butter Bacon? There are ice cream shops around the country that feature unusual flavors and companies like Ben and Jerry’s make specialty flavors that you can buy right at the grocery store. Step off the beaten path on National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day and try a new twist on your favorite dessert. After you decide between Cilantro Lime and Salty Popcorn, the choice between sugar or plain cone seems pretty easy.

  • June 30, 2020 – National Meteor Watch Day | National Social Media Day

Welcome to June 30th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate staying connected on and off the grid.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Imagine a time when you couldn’t simply log in to a website and see what your loved ones were doing. When it was near-impossible to stay in touch with a friend who moved to another country. Since the birth of social media, those days seem so far away. Sites like Facebook and LinkedIn have become such a part of people’s lives that most of us can’t imagine going through a day without visiting them. You can see photos of your college roommate’s vacation. You can share a story about your crazy day at work. The world is literally connected through these sites and apps. On National Social Media Day, reach out to an old friend and maybe make some new ones.

Before there were social media stars, people watched the actual stars in the night sky and on rare occasions, they were even rewarded with the spectacular display of a meteor shower.  On National Meteor Watch Day we celebrate the wonder of viewing space from the ground. If you think this won't capture your kid’s imagination, consider this little fact: there are millions of meteors that occur in Earth’s atmosphere every single day and it's the friction of these pebble sized rocks that creates the beautiful flare.  Check out a guide for optimal viewing and on National Meteor Watch Day consider how amazing it is that this light show happens every night for free.

  • June 29, 2020 – National Camera Day | National Waffle Iron Day

    Transcript for June 29th

Welcome to June 29th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate every day inventions that we take for granted.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

We all love to capture the moment and with devices as small as a pen or a smartphone, it's hard to imagine a time when we couldn't enjoy this fun pastime.  But a little over 200 years ago the only way to make a visual record was to paint it.  And even in 1816 the first photograph was neither simple nor practical to create.  The invention caught on thanks to George Eastman, who wasn’t the camera's inventor, but his improvements made the large and bulky apparatus more user friendly and on National Camera Day we can snap away to our hearts content thanks to this Father of Photography.

Waffles add that extra"something, something" to breakfast. We all know there’s nothing like a hot waffle off the iron covered in butter and warm maple syrup. So why don't we make them more often? Maybe you didn’t know, but there are so many great recipes you can create using your basic waffle iron. Like waffle shaped banana bread, or quesadillas or hot sandwiches. And if you’ve never pressed a glazed doughnut with a hot waffle iron you’re in for a whole new treat. John, don’t you have a recipe for leftover stuffing using the waffle iron?   Maybe if we’re lucky he’ll share the recipe. On National Waffle Iron Day, get out of the ordinary and cook up something special!

  • June 28, 2020 – National Paul Bunyan Day | National Insurance Awareness Day

    Transcript for June 28th

Welcome to June 28th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate tall tales and peace of mind.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

The lumberjack with the red plaid shirt and big blue ox first appeared in print in 1906.  But it wasn't until a 1914 ad campaign for a logging company that the stories of Paul Bunyan’s legend really took off.  These tales of exaggeration still stand and it's easy to see why.  Our imagination is fueled by the gentle giant who dragged his ax along behind him to carve the Grand Canyon and who wouldn't believe that The Great Lakes were formed as watering holes for Babe the big blue ox.  On National Paul Bunyon Day find a statue of this legend in your own neck of the woods and celebrate the grandeur of our country that is still larger than life.

    Timber!

Ouch. Well, this seems like as good a time as any to celebrate National Insurance Awareness Day. It’s something you think you’ll never need until there’s an accident. Then it’s all too apparent why we buy insurance to protect ourselves. Today is a great day to check your policies and review what your coverages are. It may sound tedious but you never know when a mythical giant lumberjack might be knocking over trees in your neighborhood!

  • June 27, 2020 – National Sunglasses Day | National Ice Cream Cake Day

    Transcript for June 27th

Welcome to June 27th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate keeping your cool.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Sure sunglasses are useful, and thanks to the Vision Council we know they are important in protecting our eyes from harmful uv rays.  But there’s a reason this day is so popular: sunglasses are the very essence of chic. The easiest way to accessorize and make a fashion statement. One look at Tom Cruise in Ray-Ban Wayfarers tells you why we still copy their style today.  You don't have to be a pilot, to turn heads in a pair of gold-rimmed aviators.  And if rose colored glasses express your point of view then go ahead show your style on National Sunglasses Day.

On Memorial Day weekend of 1929, Tom Carvel was driving his ice cream truck when he got a flat tire. He pulled into the parking lot of a local shop and watched helplessly as his frozen goods began to melt. Making the best of things, Carvel tried to sell the slightly melted ice cream to passersby and low and behold the softer texture was a huge hit! That day as he sold out his entire stock the idea for a soft-serve machine was hatched and it wasn’t long before he opened a permanent store. The name Carvel became synonymous with two things: “soft-serve” and “ice cream cakes,” which, if you grew up in New Yorker, you’ll remember as Fudgy the Whale. On National Ice Cream Cake Day celebrate the winning combination of our two favorite desserts and thank goodness for flat tires.

  • June 26th, 2020 – National Coconut Day | National Take Your Dog To Work Day

    Transcript for June 26th Day

Welcome to June 26th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate feeling like a nut and shaking things up at work.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Sometimes referred to as The Tree of Life, the coconut has been used by many cultures for centuries in everything from cosmetics to biofuel.  The earliest plants were found in India in the first century AD and the name “coconut” comes from the Spanish and Portuguese word coco meaning skull or head.  Today this flavor is a hometown favorite in cream pies and custards, though people scratched their “coco” about how to import coconuts in the early 1800s.  Thankfully, the French cracked this code by drying the meat and the rest as they say is history!  On National Coconut Day celebrate a nut that’s got us covered from head to toe in tropical goodness.

If your work day was disrupted for the past few months, you’re not alone.  And no one enjoyed the shakeup more than our dogs: because their favorite person—You—was around 24-7. These lovable interns were happy to show You the benefit of including playtime, treats, and tummy rubs to your regular work routine. Now if you have to return to an office, your pooch is probably a bit down in the dumps, but today they’re in luck! On National Take Your Dog to Work Day you and your favorite companion can celebrate once again. Who knows—maybe they’ve learned to do your job and You can take a nap under the desk.

  • June 25, 2020 – National Bomb Pop Day |National Leon Day

    Transcript for June 25th

Welcome to June 25th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate chilling out and getting a jump on the frosty season.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

One of the coolest ways to beat the heat is by celebrating National Bomb Pop Day!  This treat got its start in 1955, in the days when the music of the ice cream truck sent kids scrambling to find some change.  The red, white and blue popsicle was an instant hit during an all time high in our national pride. And it didn't hurt that the first frozen rocket arrived in the heat of July.  For that we can thank DS (Doc) Abernathy and James Merritt of Kansas City, Missouri.  The pair were on a road trip when they thought up the trio of cherry, white lemon and blue raspberry that still makes the kid in us happy!

On National Bomb Pop Day chill out with this iconic blast from the past.

Anna: We’re almost at the midpoint of the year and today is halfway to Christmas, or as it’s sometimes known: Noel. It’s National Leon Day.

Marlo: Leon? I don’t get it.

Anna: Leon is Noel spelled backwards.

    Marlo: Ohhhh.

Anna: It’s the perfect time to start planning for the holiday, especially if you are the crafty type. Why wait til the last minute when you can get a head start on the festivities? That doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying your summer. It means you have more time to get your ducks in a row. So hang by the pool, take some time for lampin’ in the Hamptons, and know that you’re way ahead of the game today on National Leon Day.
