  • June 14, 2020 – National Flag Day |National Strawberry Shortcake Day

    Transcript for June 14th

Welcome to June 14th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate the season’s best colors in red, white and blue.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

Most people believe that Betsy Ross created the American flag in 1777 and Old Glory’s design has changed 26 times since then. But one thing remains a constant: We Americans love our flag. It’s even the subject of our National Anthem. During the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, athletes from around the world pause in front of the host country’s head of state, and dip their nation’s flag in tribute. Only one country doesn’t dip their flag: The United States. On National Flag Day, unfurl the Stars and Stripes and put your American spirit on display in good old red, white and blue.

For most of the country, June is peak strawberry season and freshly picked strawberries may be among the most delicious things in the world. But anyone who’s bought a basket knows that they don’t stay fresh for long. So what do you do with all those perfect berries? Well, the ones you don’t eat right away can be made into desserts like strawberry shortcake. All it takes is strawberries, cake, and whipped cream to create this sublime dessert.  On National Strawberry Shortcake Day celebrate the simple perfection of the season’s best berry.

  • June 13, 2020 – National Kitchen Klutzes of America Day | National Weed Your Garden Day

    Transcript for June 13th

Welcome to June 13th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate klutzes and heroes around the house.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

Does bad luck seem to follow you around the kitchen?  You start out feeling like Bobby Flay or Rachel Ray only to feel like the biggest loser on an episode of “Nailed It”.  It may not be Friday but the 13th of June celebrates this tendency towards failing forward with a nod to the clumsiest cooks. And what a great lesson for those of us with kids.  Everyone has to start somewhere and laughing at yourself is a great way to take the pressure off. On National Kitchen Klutzes of America Day own your mistakes and proudly display your burnt cookies and pizzas.  All great chefs know that the road to perfection is paved with many “hockey pucks.”

And you can always feel like a superstar by getting ahead in the garden.  On National Weed Your Garden Day celebrate your ability to stop noxious weeds in their tracks.  You can even teach your kids the tricks of the trade by watering first for easier pulling and laying down mulch to deter those pesky weeds before they even take hold in the first place.  Gardening brings joy for the whole family and a great sense of satisfaction while getting outside for fresh air and sunshine.  You may be a klutz in the kitchen but it doesn’t take much to be a crime stopping hero on National Weed Your Garden Day.

  • June 12, 2020 – National Jerky Day | National Red Rose Day

    Transcript for June 12th

Welcome to June 12th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate a power packed snack and the deeper meaning of a favorite flower.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

Anna: A South American tribe called the Quechua preserved meat by drying and salting it. They’d cut the meat into strips and store them for dry seasons when food was scarce.

    Marlo: Borrrrring.

Anna: What? That’s really rude. You’re being a jerk.

Marlo: So? It’s National Jerk Day.

Anna: No it’s not. It’s National JERKY Day. That’s why I was talking about the Native Americans drying meat to preserve it. They invented jerky.

Marlo: Well, I’m sorry. I read it wrong. Honest mistake.

    Anna: Whatever… Jerky.

Marlo: ”A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Anna: That’s a quote from Romeo and Juliet and it’s not even about roses. She’s saying that she could marry Romeo if it weren’t for his last name. Their families hate one another and that means they can never be married.

Marlo: That makes sense. But if this quote isn’t about roses, why are we talking about it?

Anna: Because it’s National Red Rose Day and what else is there to say other than they’re beautiful flowers and they sell like hotcakes on Valentine’s Day?

Marlo: (pause)  Okay. That makes sense. Did you know that the colors of roses implies a certain meaning and that when you give them as a gift you should be aware of what they may be saying.

Anna: I did know that.  Red roses are meant for expressing love and romance.  So what color roses are for saying I’m sorry, I’m a jerk?

    Marlo: No idea.

  • June 11, 2020 – National Making Life Beautiful Day | National Corn on the Cob Day

    Transcript for June 11th

Welcome to June 11th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate the beautiful life and a Summer veggie you don’t want to miss.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

You’ve heard that beauty is only skin deep.  So why not celebrate the things that make life truly beautiful?  This is as simple as putting other people first, and happiness experts say that along with expressing gratitude, doing for others brings a deeper sense of satisfaction. The ripple effect is powerful when it comes to paying good will forward. On National Making Life Beautiful Day share what you have with someone else in need.  You never know how far a small act of kindness or an uplifting word can go in making life more beautiful for the world around you.

Summer has so many great things about it: vacations, beaches, sunglasses, ice cream, corn on the cob. Yes, I said corn. Okay maybe it’s not the first thing you think of when I say Summertime, but corn is a huge part of this season’s meals. Clambakes and barbecues wouldn’t be complete without it. Most of the year, our only options are frozen or canned corn, which pale in comparison to the sun ripened, sweetness of fresh corn on the cob. On National Corn on the Cob Day, get some of this limited-time only vegetable and enjoy the season’s best flavor you can eat with your hands.

  • June 10, 2020 – National Iced Tea Day | National Egg Roll Day

Welcome to June 10th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate things done the good old American way.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

This common, everyday drink was so popular that at one point in history it changed the world economy, created an empire, and helped spark a revolution. That beverage of course is tea, and in the 1700s, the demand was so great, that the English began importing more than 3,000 tons. While their trade fleets brought wealth and power to the British Empire it also brought the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution. Today with the conflict long over, we leave tea drinking to the Brits, and celebrate freedom on this side of the pond with tea that is iced, which no self respecting Brit would be caught dead drinking.  Find a spot in the shade, kick up your feet, and enjoy a summertime favorite while you celebrate National Iced Tea Day.

Iced tea is a distinctly American invention, but surprisingly, so are egg rolls. They were created in New York City in the early 1930s, but it’s not clear who the inventor was since two different chefs claimed responsibility. Also, there is no egg in the recipe for an egg roll, so no one has any clue where the name came from. Quite the mysterious story for a food that comes free with an order of Beef and Broccoli, don’t you think? On National Egg Roll Day, treat yourself to some Chinese takeout and savor that delicious side kick to your entree.

    Anna: mmm fortune cookies.

Marlo: No, I mean the egg roll.  Don’t you listen to me, Anna?

  • June 9, 2020 – National Donald Duck Day | National DJ Month

    Transcript for June 9th

Welcome to June 9th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate colorful characters.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Marlo: Anna, name a cartoon character who wears a little sailor outfit and you can’t understand a word he says.

    Anna: Jack Sparrow.

Marlo: That’s Johnny Depp. He’s not a cartoon duck!

Anna: Oh. Did you say that? I guess I missed it.

Marlo: The answer was Donald Duck, as in Hi Everybody—It’s National Donald Duck Day. I can’t believe you didn’t get that. He’s only the most popular Disney character other than Mickey. He’s been in 190 movies! People love his temper tantrums!

Anna: You’re the one having the temper tantrum, Marlo. Sorry if I ruffled your feathers. [Quack quack sound]

John: Hey everyone. Seems like a good time to jump in and tell you that it’s National DJ Month. In June, these victors of vinyl get their time in the spotlight. For… 30… whole… days.

Anna: John, where did that come from?

John: I’m working on a new character for voiceovers.

Anna: Oh okay. Are you going to be a DJ at weddings and use that voice too?

John: No, but I can use it here if you need me to.

Anna: Let me get back to you on that, Casey Kasem.

  • June 8, 2020 – National Best Friends Day | National Name Your Poison Day

    Transcript for June 8th

Welcome to June 8th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate in our own special way with the people who’ve got our back.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

You’ve heard the expression “name your poison.”  It usually comes from the bartender and refers to the question of “What’ll you have?”  But did you ever stop and think that it’s not just about alcohol?  The expression comes from having to make a decision between options that are not necessarily good.  On National Name Your Poison Day choose wisely.  It’s good to have a friend by your side who can help you weigh all the options.

And thankful it’s National Best Friends Day, Anna.  By the way, you don’t have to choose between good or bad options, cause best friends make life better no matter what you get up to.

Anna: So how are you celebrating Best Friends Day, Marlo?

    Marlo: Oh, probably golfing!

Anna: Hmmm, that sounds like poison to me.  My best friends like hanging out and we actually celebrated a friend’s birthday in her driveway in lawn chairs spaced 6 feet apart.  It was the first year I didn’t have to bake a cake too, because the birthday girl celebrated with gourmet popsicles.

    Marlo: Gourmet popsicles?  Like what?

Anna: I had pineapple-lime with chili.

Marlo: Whew, sounds like poison to me.

  • June 7, 2020 – National VCR Day | National Chocolate Ice Cream Day

    Transcript for June 7th

Welcome to June 7th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate life on the couch.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Marlo: Before there was Netflix, there was “Let’s go to Blockbuster grab some junk food and pig out on the couch.” In 2020, you can find just about any movie or show right on your TV, but where’s the fun in that? Walking around a giant rental store for hours only to find that all the good movies were rented was half the fun, wasn’t it?

    Anna: No. It really wasn’t.

Marlo: Dust off those VHS cassettes and watch ET for the millionth time—it’s National VCR Day and remember: Be Kind, Rewind.

And if you’re gonna watch mindless TV on the couch, who wouldn’t choose to eat ice cream. So the question is - vanilla or chocolate?

    Marlo: VANILLA!

Anna: Most people are fans of one or the other, both rarely both. Vanilla is good and all, but chocolate is so much… yummier. There are dozens of varieties of chocolate ice cream. And you never hear of anyone mixing in vanilla. (Marlo protests)

Anna: Nope! It’s National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, treat yourself to the good stuff and feel free to give those vanilla cone people a dirty look.

  • June 6, 2020 – National Yo-Yo Day | National Trails Day Day

    Transcript for June 6th

Welcome to June 6th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate the perfect way to get away from it all.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

You may be surprised to learn that yo-yo's have been around since Ancient Greece. There is pottery depicting a boy playing with this toy, and in 18th Century France, the aristocracy found yo-yo's very fashionable. But not all cultures thought of yo-yo's as toys or accessories. In the Philippines, hunters used them as weapons, hiding in trees and dropping the yo-yo onto their prey. Suffice to say that our modern day yo-yo's are pretty silly by comparison. On National Yo-Yo Day, celebrate classic toys that help you forget life’s ups and downs.

Another good way to look on the bright side is to get outside and enjoy a trail!  Not just for hiking, trails provide a beautiful backdrop for geocaching, birdwatching, access to canoeing and biking and any amount of exercise in between.  Although, I will be scouting the next location for National Hike with A Geek Day.

    Anna: When is that?

Marlo: You’ll just have to look at my calendar.

Anna: Really, you can’t just tell me?

Marlo: It’s called technology, Anna.  You should try it!

Anna: I’m celebrating getting away from technology on National Trails Day.  And not sure why hiking with a geek is so special.

    Marlo: Oh you’ll see!

Anna: Today is also D-Day and our Producer John McClain has a special message for us.

John: The night of June 5th, 1944 Flight Officer Thomas McGrath slowed his unarmored C47 transport and began dropping paratroopers into Normandy, beginning the Allied invasion of Europe. He served throughout the war, was awarded for bravery multiple times and returned to his home, another citizen soldier serving his country bravely on that day of days.

  • June 5, 2020 – National Moonshine Day | National Doughnut Day

    Transcript for June 5th

Welcome to June 5th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate the foods we love that break all the rules.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

During the 1920s, alcohol was illegal thanks to Prohibition. In big cities up North like New York and Chicago, gangsters smuggled in booze from other countries. But in the South crafty folks distilled their own alcohol, known as moonshine. When the product was ready, moonshiners would drive it into town in cars with souped up engines designed to outrun the cops. And when Prohibition ended, those really fast cars competed in races, that evolved into what we know as…NASCAR. On National Moonshine Day raise a legal glass to fast cars and potent potables, just don’t plan on mixing the two.

Doughnuts aren’t illegal—they're awesome. And perfect for breakfast. Okay, maybe it’s not a very healthy breakfast, but it goes so well with a cup of coffee that it’s hard to find any reason not to celebrate them. Back in 1917 our United States infantrymen even cooked them up in their helmets.  And the Salvation Army Lassies brought them all the way to the front lines to give the guys some comfort from home.  We love doughnuts, you love doughnuts, Homer Simpson loves doughnuts. How many you choose to eat is your responsibility. National Doughnut Day!  Woo Hoo!
