  • May 25, 2020 – Memorial Day | National Wine Day

Welcome to May 25th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate life, liberty and the pursuit of vino.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Memorial Day honors the men and women who have died during military conflict and has been kept in various forms in the United States since the end of the Civil War. It was first observed on May 30, 1868 as Decoration Day with volunteers decorating the graves of some 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried at Arlington National Cemetery alone.  Across the country, humble tributes occurred and a laurel wreath was placed upon the head of a Lincoln statue at City Hall in Washington D.C.  Today we pay tribute to those whose sacrifice affords us our freedom and we mark the beginning of Summer and our own celebration of life.

Hey Marlo, speaking of celebration, I hear you’ve tried all the wines?  Is that true?

Marlo: Yep, I have tried both red and white.

You don’t have to be a connoisseur to enjoy celebrating National Wine Day, and while you may find it appealing to sniff, swish, gargle and spit fine wines at a fancy tasting, it’s completely appropriate to just drink the stuff too.  Do you have a favorite wine, Marlo?

  • May 24, 2020 – Brother’s Day | National Scavenger Hunt Day

    Transcript for May 24th

Welcome to May 24th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate putting a new twist on the things that drive us crazy.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

A guy who teases you mercilessly one minute and then acts like your best friend the next is what we’d call a jerk…Unless they’re related to you, in which case we call them brothers. Today we celebrate the gents who tore up our comic book collections or poured an entire bottle of perfume on our mattresses. They also picked us up after we crashed our bikes and taught us how to throw a baseball. All in all, they’re not so bad, and we’re lucky to have them in our corner. On Brother’s Day, thank your brothers for being them and then remind them of the time they cut your pigtails off and that payback is still on its way…someday.

The kids have been home from school for over a month and you’re probably all going stir crazy. If you need something to keep them occupied while you suffer through your latest video conference call, try a scavenger hunt. Put together a list of odd items and send them on their way. If you’re feeling really ambitious, you can come up with riddles to describe the items the kids are looking for—it’s a real-life treasure hunt! Maybe there’s a prize at the end, but if nothing else, you’ll get some time to think straight today on National Scavenger Hunt Day. And maybe you can join the fun once Nancy from Accounting gets done asking questions on that endless conference call.

  • May 23, 2020 – National Lucky Penny Day | National Taffy Day

    Transcript for May 23rd

Welcome to May 23rd, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate luck in all it’s many forms.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

The United States first issued a one-cent coin in 1787 which was designed by none other than Benjamin Franklin.  On one side, it read “Mind Your Business” and the other “We Are One.” While today’s pennies don’t have much street value, finding one on the street is still a symbol of luck that could affect the outcome of your day.  If you abide by this superstition then pick up a penny showing “heads.”  And if it shows “tails” flip the coin to heads and leave it for the next person.  I’m not sure if this is what Ben Franklin had in mind but on National Lucky Penny Day we celebrate the

choice to pick up a little luck throughout our day.

And it appears that luck is in the eye of the beholder.  Consider the “happy accident” of salt water taffy for example. In 1883, David Bradley of Atlantic City, New Jersey walked into work to find that his entire supply of taffy had been covered in ocean water when a storm flooded his shop. When a girl walked in that morning and asked to buy taffy, Bradley joked that he only had “salt water taffy.”  The girl tasted a piece, loved it, and ran down to the beach to tell all her friends about it. And with that, salt water taffy became a mainstay at candy stores and gift shops everywhere. On National Taffy Day, celebrate the sticky situations turned sweet and thank your lucky stars for that big storm.

  • May 22, 2020 – National Road Trip Day | National Solitaire Day

    Transcript for May 22nd

Welcome to May 22nd, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate going the distance or staying put.  Let’s join Anna Devere for more on today’s celebrations.

Hey Marlo, did you know it’s National Road Trip Day? Yep the Friday before Memorial Day is officially road trip day and did you know there are two kinds of road trippers: the tourist and the pilot. The tourist likes to take their time, choosing backroads, and lots of breaks for snacks and sightseeing, whereas the pilot is on a mission to get to their destination efficiently with as few breaks as possible.  So which one are you?

However you like to travel, be sure to get there safely. This year a more “outdoors focused trip” may be the safest plan.  Pilot Flying J travel centers are the founders of National Road Trip Day and they recommend downloading their app for planning a route with plenty fuel, food and travel necessities along your route.  Give your car a routine tune up and hit the road for a great outdoors adventure.

The World Video Game Hall of Fame has honored games such as Pac Man, Super Mario Brothers, and Halo. But one game in the Hall of Fame may surprise you: Solitaire. This game made its debut in 1990 and since then has been played by about half a billion people worldwide. It’s also number 3 on the list of most frequently used Microsoft programs. Anyone who’s ever worked in an office can tell you how happy they are that Solitaire exists. Otherwise, how would we make it through conference calls? National Solitaire Day is the perfect opportunity to play a few hands, though it probably won’t feel as fun if you’re not goofing off at your desk while the boss is sitting in the next cube over.

  • May 20, 2020 – National Rescue Dog Day | National Be A Millionaire Day

    Transcript for May 20th

Welcome to May 20th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate underprivileged dogs and Marlo’s Millionaire moment.  Join us both after the break.

Rescue dogs hold the potential of being far more than man’s best friend. For those in need of assistance, a well trained rescue dog can enable their independence. These canines have often overcome serious obstacles themselves, and with proper training, many become a reliable source of therapeutic comfort and companionship.  Marlo, do you know how many shelter dogs are here in the US?

Marlo: I actually do know that—There are over 3 million dogs in shelters. Anna: That is exactly right. With so many dogs looking for homes, National Rescue Dog Day is the perfect opportunity to find a forever friend. Today is also National Be a Millionaire Day and Marlo, I’ll give you a million dollars if you can answer this question.

Marlo: Okay! Go ahead and ask.

Anna: If you stacked a million $1 bills, how tall would it be?

Marlo: Uh… I’m going to phone a friend.

Anna: Wait! You can’t… [phone rings, is answered by Chris (or John)]

    Chris: Hello?

Marlo: Hey Chris! I need your help answering a trivia question.

Chris: Is this the thing about the height of million bucks? I can’t help you, Marlo. I wrote the question and that’s cheating.

Marlo: I’ll split the prize with you.

Chris: 358 feet – about the height of a 35 story building!

    Marlo: Woohoo!

  • May 21, 2020 – National Strawberries and Cream Day | National Memo Day

    Transcript for May 21st

Welcome to May 21st, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate a few of my favorite things.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

If I say “berry,” what’s the first one to come to mind? (Marlo answers) See I knew that about you. And did you know they are packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants? So just for you Marlo it’s National Strawberries and Cream Day and I’m giving you permission to top a healthy bowl of strawberries with a dollop of whipped cream.

    Marlo: What’s a dollop?

Anna: Just get a can Marlo, it’s ok.

Anna: Marlo, are you there? I thought it was your turn.

Marlo: I thought it was you.

Anna: It’s you. I sent you an email about it last week.

Marlo: I uh…didn’t get the memo.

Anna: Really? Marlo, are you kidding me? It’s literally National Memo Day today. Your timing on this couldn’t be any worse.

Marlo: Or maybe it’s perfect timing so that we could talk about it today!

Anna: Okay. Whatever you say. Maybe we’ll get this one right next year.

Marlo: Sounds good. Send me a memo to remind me.

  • May 19, 2020 – National Devil’s Food Cake Day | National May Ray Day

    Transcript for May 19th

Welcome to May 19th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate having your cake and catching some rays.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

No one is quite sure where the name “Devil’s Food Cake” came from.  They are lighter and moister than other chocolate cakes and if that’s a sin then call me beyond redemption because I wouldn’t have my cake any other way.  One of the first recipe’s for this roguish delight appeared in the 1898 edition of the Hagerstown Exponent of Hagerstown, Indiana. Maybe it’s the boiling water in the list of ingredients or the way women swooned over the results, but someone back then thought the whole thing controversial. On National Devil’s Food Cake Day celebrate being naughty with a treat that doesn’t actually make you sell your soul.

Marlo: You can call me Ray, or you can call me Jay, or you can call…

Anna: Marlo, what is that?  I’ve heard that before.

Marlo: You can call me Faye, or you can call me..,

Anna: No, I mean, isn’t that a comedy bit by what’s his name.

Marlo: I don’t know what you’re talking about.  It’s National May Ray Day,

so I am heading outside to catch some sun rays.

Anna: So I’m supposed to call you Ray today?

    Marlo: (pause) Sure.

Anna: Hey, Ray.  What’s coming up tomorrow?

  • May 18, 2020 – National No Dirty Dishes Day |National Cheese Souffle Day

    Transcript for May 18th

Welcome to May 18th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate “practice makes perfect” in the kitchen.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Plates and bowls have been around since ancient times. And if you’re like us, your kitchen sink probably looks like dirty dishes have been piling up since the Stone Age. We’ve all been spending a lot of time at home lately and probably cooking meals a lot more than usual. And that means more dishes to do. So. Many. Dishes. Today is the day to make a clean start. Literally. It’s National No Dirty Dishes Day and there’s no better time to dive in and clean those plates and bowls and glasses. You can get to work on starting a new pile tomorrow.

In French, the word “Souffle” means “breath.” In English, it means “why are these things so hard to bake?” Souffles are among the most difficult recipes to master, probably because there are so many ways they can fail: you whip the egg whites too much, you open the oven too soon, you make a loud noise…probably if you breathe too loudly. And maybe this challenge seems pointless, unless you consider what a rockstar you’ll be at your next dinner party if you pull off the perfect souffle.  No one has to know how many tries it took for you to get it right.  On National Cheese Souffle Day get cracking on the road to success and like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day you’ll be an “overnight” sensation..

  • May 17, 2020 – National Cherry Cobbler Day | Take Your Parents to the Playground Day

    Transcript for May 17th

Welcome to May 17th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate mixing things up, in the kitchen and on the playground.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

They say that necessity is the mother of invention and in the case of the cherry cobbler that “need” was for a pudding.  I’m talking about British settlers in the American colonies who were longing for a taste of home but couldn’t bake their traditional suet pudding with the rudimentary ovens and lack of ingredients found in the New World.  This episode of “Dessert Impossible” played out nicely when they stewed up some cherries and topped it with biscuit dough instead, and I don’t know about you Marlo, but I would celebrate National Cherry Cobbler Day over “suet pudding” day anytime!?

No contest there!  And if you are looking to mix things up, why not celebrate Take Your Parents to the Playground Day?  If you enjoyed the classic role reversal movie, “Freaky Friday”, where a parent and child switched roles for a day, you’ll love letting the kids take you to their place of “work” to remind you how exhausting it is to be them.  Make sure you pack extra juice boxes and goldfish crackers and maybe some pb&j because going to distance with your kids takes lots of extra energy.  And you might wanna hide those annoying kid leashes in case they get any bright ideas about really sticking it to you.

  • May 16, 2020 – National Do Something Good for Your Neighbor Day| National Barbecue Day

    Transcript for May 16th

Welcome to May 16th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate what’s cooking in the neighood.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

“Won’t you be my neighbor?” We heard this question every day from Mr. Rogers, who taught us how to be considerate and kind to those around us. And if you haven’t been feeling too neighborly these days, it’s never too late to start. Yeah, the guy two houses down borrowed your drill a month ago and hasn’t returned it yet. And the family across the street plays their music too loudly, but you know what? They’re part of what makes our neighborhoods what they are. On National Do Something Good For Your Neighbor Day, celebrate the folks who make up your backyard community and be the neighbor you wish to see in the world.

And speaking of neighbors, nothing brings people together quite like a good old-fashioned barbecue. Fire up the charcoal briquets and you  instantly conjure up memories of summer days and back yards full good friends. Whatever’s cooking on the grill doesn’t matter so much as the company and the laughter because food that’s cooked outdoors just seems to taste better…that is, unless Dad burns the hamburgers again and we have to order a pizza. On National Barbecue Day all it takes is a little sunshine, some burgers, and potato salad, it really is a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
