  • June 4, 2020 – National Cognac Day | National Cheese Day

    Transcript for June 4th

Welcome to June 4th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate in cheesy style.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Marlo: Hello, friends. Today I am pleased to celebrate one of the most delightful alcohols ever bottled.

Anna: Are you wearing a smoking jacket? Where did the fireplace and leather chair come from? And are you drinking from a brandy snifter??

Marlo: Yes, it’s a brandy snifter. It’s National Cognac Day. Cognac is a special brandy that’s only made in the Cognac region of France.

Anna: I don’t know about this new look for you, Marlo.

Marlo: I think I look good in this jacket. May I pour you a glass, my good woman?

Anna: Wow, Marlo. I thought maybe all this cheesiness was in celebration of National Cheese Day.

Marlo: Cognac pairs well with the big, bold flavor of a Stilton cheese.

Anna: That’s good to know. I’ll need to try it.

Marlo: Or you can enjoy a glass with a lovely Swiss Gruyere.

Anna: Okay. Well, as I was saying…

Marlo: Cognac’s delicate perfume, with just a hint of vanilla, mirrors the cheese’s subtle floral aroma

Anna: Oh lord. I’ll have that glass of brandy now.

    Marlo: Cognac, Anna. Cognac.

  • June 3, 2020 – National Egg Day | National Repeat Day

    Transcript for June 3rd

Welcome to June 3rd, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate which came first.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

Which came first…the chicken or the egg? Well, if the answer is based on our calendar, the chicken came first. Yesterday we celebrated rotisserie chicken, but today it’s National Egg Day. There aren’t many foods as versatile as eggs, whether you like scrambled, hard-boiled, over easy, or poached…the variations are practically endless. And while doctors and nutritionists can’t seem to decide whether eggs are a health food or an indulgence, eggs provide 6 grams of protein, only 5 grams of fat and a mere 75 calories each.  Sounds like a sure way to satisfy hunger to me!

Marlo: Which came first…the chicken or the egg? Well, if the answer is…

Anna: Marlo, what are you doing? I just said that.

Marlo: What are you doing? I just said that.

Anna: Are you mocking me? What’s this all about?

Marlo: It’s National Repeat Day. Today, you can repeat things that you love. Like listening to your favorite song over and over, eating the same thing for lunch and dinner, or even…

Anna: Repeat things your friends say.

    Marlo: Exactly!

    Anna: [pause] Exactly!

Marlo: Are you repeating me now?

Anna: Are you repeating me now?

  • June 2, 2020 – National Rocky Road Day | National Rotisserie Chicken Day

    Transcript for June 2nd

Welcome to June 2nd, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate comfort food that makes life a little bit easier.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Around the time of the Great Depression, ice cream makers William Dreyer and Joseph Edy combined chocolate ice cream, walnuts, and marshmallows to create a new flavor that they dubbed Rocky Road. This  name was a nod to the tough times everyone faced and the new ice cream was a big hit. Up till then, ice creams came in basic flavors, but a new refrigeration technology allowed for more ingredients to be mixed in and thus Dreyer and Edy rolled out a silver lining in an otherwise difficult time. On National Rocky Road Day, celebrate the good things in life and the small things that make the road smoother.

Speaking of small things that make a big difference, why is rotisserie chicken so delicious?  We all know that slow cooking makes meat more tender and juicy but how is it that the slow rotation of a plain old chicken over heat produces flavor that’s hard to beat!  There is no simpler way to make a quick easy meal than whipping up a few side dishes and purchasing a rotisserie bird to go with them.  That is by far my favorite meal hack.  Are you with me Marlo?

  • June 1, 2020 – National Heimlich Maneuver Day | National Penpal Day

    Transcript for June 1st

Welcome to June 1st, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate small acts with a big impact.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

It’s tough to say how many lives have been saved by the procedure developed by Dr. Henry J. Heimlich in 1974.  Some estimate that abdominal thrusts, otherwise known as the Heimlich Maneuver have been successfully performed over 50,000 times.  This technique is so simple to use that even young people, with very little training have been able to save choking victims.  And perhaps most remarkable of all is the fact that Dr. Heimlich did not use it himself until he was 96 years old, when he was able to save a woman in his nursing home.  On National Heimlich Maneuver Day we celebrate this life saving technique and the man who invented it.

It’s important to let the people we love know how much they mean to us and that’s especially true at the moment. We have bridged the gap with our loved ones via calls, texts, and countless video chats. But if you want to give your correspondence that personal touch, try composing a handwritten letter. While it may feel outdated, a physical letter has the quality of permanence because it can be read and reread many times. If you’re not convinced of your own way with words, just imagine the smile on the recipient’s face when they open the mailbox and see something handwritten from you. On National Penpal Day celebrate the big impact of a simple gift from the heart.

  • May 31, 2020 – National Smile Day | National Macaroon Day

    Transcript for May 31st

Welcome to May 31st, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate things that make our mouth happy.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

Contrary to popular belief, it does not take fewer muscles to smile than to frown. The simple act of smiling can use up to 53 muscles, while frowning takes only 11. But the good news is that all this upward, facial exercise is actually good for your health. Psychologists say that a smile can instantly improve your mood, even if you have to force it.  And smiles relax our bodies too, which is good news for our immune systems. Hey Marlo, what are you smiling at over there? (muffled response) Did you know it was National Smile Day? Is that a cookie I see?

Marlo: Not just any cookie, it’s a macaroon.

Anna: The kind made with coconut?

Marlo: Is there any other kind?

Anna: Nope, I was checking to see if you were confusing them with macarons, which are French.

Marlo: I wouldn’t do that, Anna.  I’m fluent in “cookie.”

Anna: Yes I see that.  Did you know that macaroons originated in Italy in the 8th or 9th century?

    Marlo: (muffled reply while chewing)

Anna: Not much else in that cookie except coconut. (no response)Pretty chewy huh?  I’m glad you’re enjoying National Macaroon Day, Marlo.

It’s also National Speak in Sentences Day.  Guess there’s no chance you’re celebrating that today.

  • May 30, 2020 – National Water a Flower Day |National Hole In My Bucket Day

Welcome to May 30th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate life in full bloom and holy buckets.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

If you have a garden or a potted plant or two, chances are good that something is blooming around you right about now!   If not you can celebrate getting up to speed with some gardening tips on National Water a Flower Day.  The good news is that with just a little effort you can be an expert by paying attention to which flowers are drought resistant and which ones like to stay moist.  And with Pollinators Month right around the corner, you’ll be rewarded with the beautiful display of the web of life right in your own backyard.

    Marlo: Holy Buckets!

    Anna: What’s wrong Marlo?

Marlo: Nope, that’s just what I’m celebrating today on National Hole in My Bucket Day.

    Anna: Isn’t that a song?

Marlo: Yep. Can you sing it?

Anna: Nope.  I mean, am I allowed to?

    Marlo: Nope.

Anna: But I bet a holy bucket makes a good planter for flowers?

Marlo: Yep, or a compost bin.

Anna: Yep, or a beer bong!

    Marlo: Now you’re talking!

  • May 29, 2020 – National Coq Au Vin Day| National Paperclip Day

    Transcript for May 29th

Welcome to May 29th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate French classics and trading up legends.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

You may not be impressed to see “Rooster with Wine” on the menu but any culinary expert knows that a good Coq Au Vin is the hallmark of French cooking.  Dating all the way back to the days of Julius Caesar, the dish from the Gaul region features a braise of chicken, cooked with wine, salt pork, mushrooms, and garlic.

Marlo: “Did you say “bruised chicken?”

Anna: No, braised, as in cooked in liquid.

Marlo: Oh, I thought that might be something they did in ancient times.

Anna: Stay out of my kitchen, Marlo.

    Marlo: (french accent) “With pleasure”

Marlo: So have you heard about the guy who traded a red paperclip for several items over time until he eventually traded for a house?

    Anna: Say what?

Marlo: Yep, Canadian blogger Kyle MacDonald used the childhood game of Bigger, Better to trade a red paperclip for a fish-shaped pen and so on and so forth up to fourteen trades until in the end he traded a movie role for a two story farm-house in Kipling, Saskatchewan.

    Anna: Huh?

    Marlo: Happy National Paperclip Day

Anna: You’re the King of non sequiturs today

Marlo: That’s better than the Queen of bruised chickens.

Anna: So what’s going on tomorrow?

  • May 28, 2020 – National Hamburger Day | National Brisket Day

    Transcript For May 28th

Welcome to May 28th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate fast and slow beef.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Hamburgers are one of America’s most popular foods, so it’s no surprise that dozens of people take credit for their invention. The idea for a cooked patty of ground beef originated in Hamburg, Germany, and years later someone put the patty between two slices of bread. And those are the only details anyone seems to be able to agree on. This culinary superhero doesn’t appear to suffer any setback from it’s lack of an agreed upon origin story, however, with McDonald’s selling 75 of them every second! On National Hamburger Day fire up the grill or grab your favorite takeout for a flavor that always delivers the taste of home.

And if you’ve got some time on your hands, take the slow and steady approach with a home cooked brisket that answers the question, “Where’s the beef?”  Brisket is a relatively inexpensive cut of meat that comes out fork tender with a little searing, seasoning and extending cooking time that’s well worth the wait.  On National Brisket Day take it easy with a home cooked meal that has all the comfort of home without a lot of fuss.

  • May 27, 2020 – National Grape Popsicle Day | National Cellophane Tape Day

    Transcript for May 27th

Welcome to May 27th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate happy accidents.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Like so many good things, the Popsicle’s creation was a happy accident. In 1905, 11-year-old Frank Epperson was sitting on his front porch, stirring a cupful of powdered soda and water with a stick. That night was unusually cold, and the forgotten mixture left out on the porch was transformed by the next morning into a frozen pop, that would later be known as the Popsicle. On National Grape Popsicle Day you can celebrate warmer weather with this cool treat in one of the most underrated flavors. Purple is the color of royalty for a reason.

Unlike the popsicle, cellophane tape was not an overnight success.  The inventor, Richard Gurley Drew created “invisible tape” in 1930 to seal cellophane packages sold in groceries and bakeries but when folks began heat sealing those packages his invention missed the mark completely.  3M company had the last laugh however, when the product found a market in homes and offices and you’d be hard pressed to wrap a package today without this handy invention. On National Cellophane Tape Day you may also celebrate the happy accident of tying up your little brother with this surprisingly strong restraint.  (Marlo: that doesn’t sound like an accident.) Wait, did I say that out loud?

  • May 26, 2020 – National Paper Airplane Day | National Blueberry Cheesecake Day

    Transcript for May 26th

Welcome to May 26th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate some friendly competition in the air and on the ground.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

You may think that making paper airplanes is kid stuff, but some people take it very seriously. Ken Blackburn set the record for the longest paper airplane flight, by staying aloft for an unbelievable 27.6-seconds. In fairness, he is an aeronautical engineer for the Air Force who has written books on the science of folding paper airplanes. No doubt his skills would make even the Wright Brothers jealous. On National Paper Airplane Day, get your kids in the game with a friendly competition of folding and flight, and who knows, you may find yourselves breaking some World Records in no time.

Ask someone in New York City to name the best cheesecake and hands down they will direct you to Junior’s—a classic-looking diner on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. Junior’s has been in the same location since 1950 and its renowned cheesecake has attracted celebrities, famous athletes, and even U.S. presidents. But there’s no need to get cocky if you think the best cheesecake is closer to home. You may even have  bragging rights in your very own kitchen. On National Blueberry Cheesecake Day celebrate in a smooth, laid back style like this creamy and decadent dessert.
