Drug-Induced Phototoxicity in Vitiligo: The Role of Hydrochlorothiazide in Photosensitivity Dermatitis.
Dr. Celina Dubin, MD, is a resident physician in dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She co-authored this study, which was published in Case Reports in Dermatological Medicine. The study examines the impact of hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic commonly used as an antihypertensive agent, in photosensitivity dermatitis, a multifactorial condition characterized by an exaggerated cutaneous response to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, often exacerbated by exogenous agents, particularly photosensitizing medications. This case highlights the need to recognize drug-induced photosensitivity in vitiligo and to better understand how UV vulnerability and photosensitizing medications interact.
