  • #129: Kneeling in Solidarity
    #129: Kneeling in Solidarity

This week's episode begins with a discussion on Memorial Day. The duo talks about their feelings for the holiday, the special happenings in their lives, and how they handle this holiday with relatives and others who celebrate it.

They continue with an interview with Blasphemy Apparel , a local Michigan company dedicated to free speech, while driving forward the image that nothing is held above ridicule, discussion, and approach.

The episode closes with a powerful segment talking about the new NFL rule where they claim to fine NFL teams for players who refuse to stand for the national anthem. This topic hits close to home as Chris Squared work together as allies fighting against oppression of POC and the many deaths our government has dealt them. They express their honest opinions of what they feel the NFL has done, and where the NFL’s loyalty lay.

#128: Rome is Burning and We are Drinking Gasoline

After a week leave of absence, the hosts rejoin reality and the show to talk about some important discoveries and opinions. Back in episode 105, the team talked about baby drop boxes and how they had been successful in other states as a means to drop off a baby without alerting the law to it. Recently a law has been passed for Michigan that will allow for some of these baby drop boxes to be placed in Michigan. They talk through what the means and how important of a bipartisan step that Michigan lawmakers have made.

The without much ado, Chris Squared talk about #45 nomination of Gina Haspel, the Queen of Torture. They discuss their disappointment an this pick as well as all the members who help confirm her to the Director of the CIA seat. In an effort to be impartial, they look at her record, how it fits into where we are at as a country, and if we get to “Hilary Did It” to wash any dirty laundry Gina may bring to the table.

The show ends discussing a study on CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility. The study dove into how corporations are going above and beyond to drive social change, and what that allows for employees to do. You would think this would be good for society and in turn for the world. But the study is not as favorable to this as one would hope.

  • #127: Center For Inquiry and Civics Day
#127: Center For Inquiry and Civics Day

Today’s episode is special and one that Tanner felt was needed after a long day of talking to legislators. This episode is done in solo as Hanna has taken off a few weeks to be with his wife and newborn daughter.

This episode will focus on the recent Civic’s Day hosted by CFI Michigan at the Michigan State capitol building. The episode will talk about his experiences, the desire to start working toward changing people’s minds when it comes to interacting with local politics, and staying involved with up to date information about the bills going around in Michigan.

The goals the Chris Squared Duo have set for themselves and their desire to promote local politics first, lead them to start researching and attending different events in an effort to continue their pursuit of a better government.

Sit back, relax, grab a drink (especially unsweetened ice tea), and listen in as Tanner talks about learning to become more involved politically.

#126: Alpha God: The Psychology of Religious Violence and Oppression

This episode is a solo effort by Tanner, as Hanna’s wife just had their second child and he is taking time off to be with the family. We wish him the best and are excited to see all the amazing baby pictures whenever he recovers from the shock of being a father a second time.

The episode though is close to Tanner’s heart as he interviews Dr Hector Garcia, author of Alpha God The Psychology of Religious Violence and Oppression. As we all know Tanner loves evolution and this discussion hits home as he talks with the doctor about religion and how evolution played a big role in how it developed, adapted, and gives us even more reason to disbelieve the fairy tale that has encapsulated millions throughout the last couple millenia.

But without giving away to much of the book check out this latest episode with the amazing Dr Hector Garcia as he inspires Tanner with new theories and discussion points on the origins of religion.

125: Occupy Till I Come and Other Tales from the Cellar

Cellar Door Skeptics Podcast is at it again with another episode solely focused on the Chris Squared discussions of current events and relevant science topics. The show begins with a discussion of the recently deceased Barbara Bush, Justin Bieber’s religious musical, and a discussion on Stephen Hawking’s final paper.

If that was not enough to entice you, the duo resurrects “Crazy S*** Chris Used to Believe”. They delve into a look at the internet pastor Dave who thinks masturbation makes you gay. And they do not stop their as they talk about Tanner’s upbring with the willfully ignorant church who taught Tanner things it took years to correct. They examine how “Pastor Dave” is not the coach he seems and work toward engaging the bible in a thoughtful discussion on how crazy “Pastor Dave” spews toxicity in the ears of those who listen.

The show wraps up talking about artificial sweeteners, the science or lack thereof, and how we should all do our due diligence to ensure that we do not believe the trending garbage spewed in the name of “natural health”.

  • #124: Women v. Religion: The Case Against Faith
#124: Women v. Religion: The Case Against Faith

This week on Cellar Door Skeptics, Tanner interviews three amazing authors representing their new book, Women VS Religion. Alexis, Candace, and Karen join the show to talk about their essays on how religion has affected them as women.

The book is a collection of essays by different women, from different walks of life, all talking about the damage that religion has done to women. Each essay is a different story told through different lenses to allow for a unique blend of upbringing, beliefs, apostasy, and an understanding on how to survive the different aspects of religion as a women.

The show is important because it helps to highlight the unique struggles women face during and after religion has touched or been apart of their lives. This episode is special as it gave Tanner a perspective of how others suffer differently than he has while showing the amazing strength of others and what they have to go through.

#123: Orbitcon and Secular Women Work Conventions

This episode is jam packed with amazing convention talk.

Cellar Door Skeptics hosts return from their talk at the Michigan Atheist Convention. They talk about their time there, the friendships they made, and the other AMAZING speakers. They reflect on the whole convention and what it means to them.

    BUT…..

The best part of the show is when Tanner does an interview with Stephanie Zvan orchestrator of Orbitcon, an online convention that is designed to meet the needs and interests of the socially active atheist community while providing entertainment and education all from an online platform easily available to everyone.

They also talk about the future conference Secular Women Work, what it means to the community and how they are preparing this year to have even more workshops to inspire you to be better activists. This conference is exciting because it talks about women as activists and how we can all learn different tips and tricks pertaining to being better activists in our own communities.

  • #122: Is the Atheist Movement the Sensible Middle
#122: Is the Atheist Movement the Sensible Middle

Cellar Door Skeptics begins the episode this week talking about the media corporations, specifically Sinclair, and what it means to have one corporation own 70% of the media networks. The discussion surrounds printed newspapers and if the country would move back to printed media if we started to have to pay for online articles.

The duo also look at Bill “Shootee” new proposal to help children read. Essentially his idea was to have a public place and demand kids read. This sounds like an authoritarian version of a library. Funny how in the last 5 years that the GOP has controlled Michigan we are only now trying to deal with our education problem.

Lastly Chris Squared decided to talk about a recent article in Vice about how the Atheist movement looks like it is veering toward an alt right political position. They tackle the dialog between the Vice article and a Friendly Atheist article. As they flesh out these two articles, an earnest discussion started with a look at a prominent Atheist whose political beliefs have veered toward a Neo-con mentality. They deconstruct whether the “Sensible Middle” is where the Atheist movement has always been or if it is leaving and heading more conservative.

  • #121: MRSA Infects Facebook
    #121: MRSA Infects Facebook

Cellar Door Skeptics pulls out all the stops this week with an Amazing episode ready for your listening pleasure. The show begins with a look at a new antibiotic that is in animal trials that could help super flu diseases like MRSA. They look at what the new study has found and how promising it could be to helping stop the rate of death caused by this awful disease.

After they pour out a little hand sanitizer on their microphones, the duo look at Facebook and its breach of personal integrity and a degradation of Facebook morals. Tanner downloads his facebook history and they talk about the damage done and how it feels Facebook does not want to admit wrongdoing.

The show closes tonight talking about ICE detention centers. After an NPR article was released a few months ago, they decide to look into what detention centers mean and how awful it is to live in a government mandated housing run by for profit companies.

Do not forget if you want to meet Cellar Door Skeptics and share a pint or two with them, they will be at the Michigan Atheist Convention April 7th in Detroit.

#120: Betsy Devos Dumpster Fire and Jesus Returns

Cellar Door Skeptics returns this week with an in depth look into Betsy Devos and her recent interview blunder. The duo talks through the fact that she was not able to present her platform with anything more than talking points. They also examine the school rankings in hopes that Betsy will listen to the episode and be able to actually go to some of the schools that may need help. They also compare the difference in rating from Charter Schools to Public Schools to see if there is any truth behind Betsy Devos candid claim that Choice is Better.

Later Tanner interviews Author Matthew James a PHD Neuroscientist who has written a book about Jesus Returning. Now this is not your average book and the interview is full of irrelevance and laughter. The book is about Jesus coming back to try and reclaim the earth after the failure of his father, God, to do so. Humans are just running to wild without his divine presence and Jesus tries to rectify it. This light hearted interview will let you get to know the author and preview a funny book.

The show ends on a high note, talking about Fusion and how it is playing a role in changing how we perceive energy. They talk through the science behind a new experiment done recently and examine what fruits may come from this type of discovery.

Don’t forget you can join Cellar Door Skeptics April 7th at the Michigan Atheist 30th State convention in Farmington Hills Michigan.
