Celluloid Barbara

WHADDYA GOT? GREAT ASS!

It's Al Pacino week at Celluloid Barbara HQ. We take a deep dive into one of his lesser known masterpieces, 'Danny Collins', where he plays a debauched and decadent rockstar relic from the 70s. It's a real tear jerker, and again, further proof of Pacino as one of the planet's greatest ever actors!

This week we welcomed in special guest star, Joe Jackson, to discuss his favourite ever film: 'Ikiru', by Akira Kurosawa. A 1950s Japanese film about bureaucracy, ageing, and the sweet embrace of DEATH. So it's obviously a light romantic comedy! Listen in as Henry, Matty & Joe wrestle with this black and white epic in scintillating detail and ball aching honesty.

The first in what we hope will be many Ghibli visitations, John & Jono clamber aboard Totoro's warm fuzzy belly and snuggle down for some podcast fun. A truly enchanting Hayao Miyazaki film, this is a quite simply a juggernaut in Japanese animation...

“Sometimes when I think of how good my book is going to be, I can't breathe.”

Oh sweet lord it's another podcast from those legendary intergalactic Tydeman bros. We spent time on a sweet Sunday afternoon waxing lyrical about 'Capote', a 2005 biopic about the troubled and talented Truman Capote and his writing of his famous book 'In Cold Blood'. There were only two of us in this podcast so we hope you can hear the syrupy intimacy in our voices.

WE'RE BACK! Celluloid Barbara lopes back into your life with Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Inherent Vice'. A woozy look into the 70s sleaze of Los Angeles, two of our hosts actually didn't make it through the film, so we instead engaged in a vicious trilogy, with a returning stab from the masterful Jono Bond.

This week, we took on the gargantuan that is 'The Graduate'. A wonderful, epic comedic piece of celluloid that sees a little bloke have it off with a fiery cougar. But is there more than meets the eye? Vast lighters and low lit bars, driving while drunk, crashing weddings and problematic plot lines and problematic actors (we're looking at you Dustin Hoffman) it's all here in the rich, wonderful world of our podcast.

Our first ever guest, the mercurial Jono Bond swings by with his favourite ever film, Martin Scorsese's 'Silence'. It's a big old, swampy religious work, and there's a whole lot to wade through. Come with us through the reeds and bring your wellingtons.

After some gremlins in the machinery fudged us, we splutter back into life with Luca Guadagnino's 'Call Me By Your Name'.  A wonderfully rich, sun kissed romance set in Northern Italy, we enjoyed rambling on about this masterpiece, and we hope you do too!
