I always loved this story.

This is my version, comes from the tellings I listened too - all enchanted - from the Old Ones in the village, and from Dad who was a cyfarwydd, that’s a taleweaver in the old tongue.

There’s many layers in the story as there always are in what we know now as fairy stories. They’re a simple story on the top … but read more, dig deeper …

I must have been very small when I first heard this tale, I’ve a feeling it was Uncle jack told it of a Midwinter’s Eve as I do have recollections of the tillylamps hissing and eyeing them very carefully in caase they turned out to be toads in disguise 😊.
