Grace breeds generosity. Paul closes his letter grateful not only for the financial support of the Philippians, but for their true partnership which resulted in mutual joy and their personal growth. We are all called to partner in the work of the kingdom of God.

Conflict happens. Wherever there are people, there are problems. Paul received news that there was ongoing disunity in Philippi. It was serious enough for him to mention in his letter, and holds good wisdom for us as we inevitably face conflict. Unity is important. And handling conflict in a biblical way is crucial.

Not all of life, or the Christian life, is a summer vacation. Times get tough. It’s in those times that we need the confidence, humility, community, and hope to press on and stand firm. These are Paul’s exhortations to the Philippians, and good words for our “winters” as well.

We all “stand” on something. It is either our own supposed sufficiency or the grace-given standing of God. A secure standing comes from God by faith, not by works. And it makes possible a relationship with God - a relationship that promises power, is transformative (through suffering), and ends in eternal life with God. It's a relationship worth the loss of all other gains and standings.

WARNING: Don’t confuse religious activity for a relationship with God. Don’t equate morality with Christianity. Don’t assume that a strict lifestyle means a true faith. Paul recounts his religious deeds before Christ, but now counts them as rubbish compared to the righteousness that come from Jesus. We can reject God by our self-righteousness as well as our unrighteousness.

Graduation is a time of celebration and reflection. Pastor Brent encourages our High School graduates to step back and consider how the next few months and years will impact the Kingdom. He charges students to be passionate, humble and purposeful believers.

Heroes are in short supply today. Paul commends two faithful men, Timothy and Epaphroditus, as exemplary servants and soldiers and charges the Philippians to honor such men.
