The clearest anticipation of Christ in Amos is found at the end of the book. He has all authority to judge (1:1-9:10), but He will also restore His people (9:11-15). While the hearers of this in Amos’ time were thinking of a return to the glories of the Israelites kingdom, Amos is looking forward to the redeemer and restorer of all creation.

In chapter 2, verse 9 Haggai speaks about a temple that will be even greater and grander than the one Solomon built. In John 2, Jesus talks also talks about the temple, only instead of talking about a building, he is talking about himself. It is in Jesus that we have our perfect temple because he is the perfect presence of God dwelling amongst his people.

God’s prophecy spoken through Nahum underscores God’s intolerant hatred of sin, His intention to shame and destroy the wicked, and the fact that He is simultaneously good, slow to anger, a refuge for those who love Him. The rhetorical question is asked, “Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.” (Nahum 1.6)

Hosea prophesied during the latter half of the eighth century B.C. (c. 753–722 B.C.). This period was an extremely difficult time in Israel’s history, just before the northern kingdom went into exile. Hosea’s primary audience was Ephraim (another name for the northern kingdom, Israel), which is mentioned 35 times in the book. Hosea wanted to see Israel turn back to God.

The book of Malachi points us to some difficult truths about the nature of our hearts and how difficult it is to love God fully. Thankfully, we have Jesus and because of him and his work on the cross, we have a new heart to love God with all that we have. Malachi speaks to a people that are apathetic and in need of A new heart, Jesus speaks to all of us and offers us a new heart.

Advent is not only a time to look back. It’s also a time to look forward. The same Jesus that came and “dwelt among us” is coming again - as King and Lord of all! In this message we consider the wonderful comfort of The Promise of Jesus’ Return.

Among the first to worship Jesus were Magi from the East. This scene in the Advent whispers an incredible mercy: God reveals His Son and extends salvation to the nations. Men and women from every people, tribe and tongue will taste the honey-like sweetness of Jesus’ name upon their lips, confessing Him as Lord and worshiping Him as King. Because of God’s great love for the world, He sent His Son.

Today, the ability to share exciting news with others is quick and easy. With one tweet, post, #hashtag, or group text, we can communicate with the masses. Of course, Mary & Joseph didn’t have such abilities. But God announced the good news through heavenly angels and unlikely shepherds. We too are called to herald this message of Jesus’ coming.
