There’s a story in Luke 10:38-42 about Jesus and two women named Mary and Martha. Jesus comes to town and Martha is busy preparing while Mary simply wants to sit at the feet of Jesus. Who was wrong and who was right is the question most people ask but Jesus is more concerned about why they both did what they did instead of what they did. In Isaiah 9 there is a prophecy about the birth of Christ nearly 700 years before Jesus was born. When Isaiah gives this prophecy he doesn’t share it through a lens of wishing it would be but rather from a certainty of what he was certain would be. Because of Jesus, we always have hope. When the darkness surrounds you, never forget to hold tight to the hope that’s within you.

God works through the silence. This is a reminder that will help us grow in our faith instead of struggling through it when we feel God is distant and quiet. Rather than running from the silence, what if we ran to it and let God use it to strengthen our faith and dependence on Him?

In 1 Kings 18 there’s a story about a prophet, a king, a famine and fire that falls from heaven. At the center of this story is a moment of sacrificial generosity where a group of people give what they do not have enough of to watch God do what only He can do. When we take our just enough, God multiplies it and turns it into more than enough.

The order of things matters when you commit your life to following Jesus. Part of what God invites us to do with our money is to trust Him with our first and our best. Proverbs 3:9-10 and Malachi 3:10 make the ask clear while Paul reminds us to check out motivations for giving in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7. I give God my first and my best because He gave me His first and His best. When I trust His plan, I have the opportunity to experience true freedom in my finances.

Money can be a messy conversation in the context of church. Lots of people have lots of feelings when the church talks about our wallets but God has a plan that offers us freedom in our finances and the chance to make an eternal impact through our generosity. The challenge is that most of us don’t know what that plan actually is. In this sermon, Pastor Chris reminds us that we are stewards not owners and that when we remember everything we have is God’s, giving becomes a privilege not a problem.

The end is not about escape but restoration. Those of us who are Christ Followers have a part to play in the last days. Jesus reminds us clearly in Matthew 24:14 that a great awakening and revival will precede his return and, in the meantime, we are to be about our Fathers business just like Jesus was when He was on this earth.

In Matthew 24:6-10, Jesus lists some scary things that are going to happen as the end of the world approaches. It’s disturbing enough that some people just skip this part of the text and move to the good stuff. In reality, you can’t have the good stuff without the hard stuff.
