The Bible has a lot to say about money. For starters, there are over 2,500 Bible verses about handling our money and stuff. Jesus also talked more about money than He did faith or prayer combined and 11 of his 40 parables had money or possessions as the central themes. For all the money talk in the Bible there’s still confusion about what the Bible actually says about this topic. The church is often at the center of the confusion by teaching only what is comfortable or personally beneficial instead of exploring the depth of what God actually has to say. Living a generous life helps us live a life fulfilled. This is the truth and living this truth out with our life, has the power to set us free in our finances.

The book of Judges is full of both tragedy and hope. In this book we see a repetitive pattern of sin and oppression from God’s people followed by repentance and deliverance. The story of Gideon is one of the central moments in this book where we see this pattern play out. God calls Gideon, who sees himself as the weakest man from the weakest tribe, to deliver His people from their oppressor. Gideon burns the boats of his past to step into his future but, on the other side of the victory, what was once a willing life and humble heart becomes one full of pride and arrogance. In this sermon, we are reminded about the importance of unpacking the baggage we were not designed to carry.

In Exodus 3:7-8 God promises Moses that He will lead His people out of slavery and to a new land that is “flowing with milk and honey”. It’s an odd reference for two things that are common commodities in our world today but the meaning ran much deeper for Moses and the Israelites. This land was first promised to Abraham over 400-years before Moses and through it all, God is reminding his people that His goodness will always follow them as long as they stay committed to following Him.

There is terrible, wonderful news and that news is that we are not in control. Our desire for control is real and, in this sermon, Pastor Chris argues it’s a boat we need to burn because God can’t be in full control of our life if we always need to control what’s happening in it. Throughout the pages of Scripture we are reminded that God is in control but this doesn’t mean we don’t have a part to play. The thing we can control the most is the choice we make to surrender control to Jesus.

The year was 1519 and Hernan Cortes stood on the shores of Verecruz with an army ready to take a treasure from the Aztecs that had been protected for over 600 years. After sharing his plan for the mission, Cortes did something unexpected. He ordered that the ships they arrived on be burned. The only option for a safe journey home was to survive and take the boats of their enemy. It was an unorthodox strategy but it worked. One could make a case that the guidance Paul gives in Philippians 3:12-14 isn’t that different from the advice Cortes gave to burn the ships. We will either let our past shape us or define us and the choice is up to us.

The resurrection is the moment of all moments in the life of Jesus but there are many moments that set the stage for this moment to happen. One of those moments is found in Luke 5:17-26 where Jesus heals a paralyzed man. The friends of this paralyzed man literally tear off the roof of a house to make it happen and radical faith is at the center of the story. Faith is the ingredient that moves us forward. The Book of Jonah is the only book in the Bible that ends with a question in chapter 4. That question is one God asks Jonah that focuses on how much He loves people. There’s a Hebrew word in the beginning of Jonah chapter 4 that can best be defined as benevolent love. To be benevolent is to give freely and without bias. This is what God’s love looks like and, once we receive it, we are called to extend it to those around us…especially the people we might be tempted to call our enemy.
