A Religious Freedom Resolution whose time has come...

Words spoken can change a heart. Words written can change a culture.

Words agreed upon can change the world. The constitutions of any country codify the words of the people and its leaders. The Bill of Rights that

America holds so dear was dreamed of by oppressed people, spoken of by freedom-loving leaders, signed by men of vision. These words of liberty were codified as an umbrella for a society to be sheltered form the reigns of tyranny.

Freedom of religion now needs its own "Bill of Rights." Lives are lost each day to the fanaticism of religion. Every generation has seen it and no religion can look at its history and be without blame. It is time for the moorings of religion to be acknowledged globally. They should not be politicized nor ignored. Every mainline religious leader of all faiths speak of the peace that their people want.

The Religious Freedom Resolution gives individuals and leaders the opportunity to come together, not as one religion, but for the freedom of all religions. Ambassadors for Peace.

In our ongoing series, today I will discuss the early developments between Marcion and Ebionite thought and how these two groups became a large factor in how the face of Christian doctrine would be developed. Traces of the impact of these two groups can be seen on the face of much Christian belief here in our time. Who was Marcion and what did he reason was the purpose of Jesus? What were some of the beliefs that caused the early Gentile followers of Jesus to not be overly excited about the Ebionite practices? These questions and more as we study the early formations of our faith.

Amy-Jill Levine is E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, Graduate Department of Religion, and Program in Jewish Studies. Holding a B.A. from Smith College, M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University, and honorary doctorates from the University of Richmond, the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, and the University of South Carolina- Upstate, Professor Levine has been awarded grants from the Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council of Learned Societies. She has held office in the Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Biblical Association, and the Association for Jewish Studies. Her most recent books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus (HarperOne), the edited collection, The Historical Jesus in Context (Princeton) as well as the fourteen-volume series, Feminist Companions to the New Testament and Early Christian Writings (Continuum). She has recorded "Introduction to the Old Testament," "Great Figures of the Old Testament," and "Great Figures of the New Testament" for the Teaching Company. A self-described "Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches in a predominantly Christian divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt," Professor Levine combines historical- critical rigor, literary-critical sensitivity, and a frequent dash of humor with a commitment to eliminating anti-Jewish, sexist, and homophobic theologies."
