The African theologian Augustine summarised our situation well. He wrote about God; “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in you.” We try to fill our need for God with other religions, other things such as relationships, money, alcohol, and so on. But we will only ever be fulfilled when we fill our God-shaped hole in our lives with God himself. He calls us to come, his gift of salvation and renewal is free, and fulfills us more than we could imagine, and enables us to live as we ought to, loving God with all our heart, mind soul and strength, and loving our neighbour as ourselves. The free gift is offered to us. Will you take it?
Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (Matthew 11:28–30, NLT)
