Today I share a deeply personal episode of Change In Course. This is not a story of despair; it's a testament to resilience, growth, and the unwavering human spirit. Glenn Tatro's narrative is more than an exploration of fear; it's a journey through the unknown, a transformation that has reshaped his outlook on life via sobriety, self-reflection, and gratitude.

In 1988, the Navy frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts was tasked with escorting Kuwaiti oil tankers in and out of the Persian Gulf. Iraq and Iran were at war, a conflict often referred to as the "Tanker War." It was not Quartermaster Danny Nicholson's first deployment to the Persian Gulf, but it was, along with his 214 shipmates, a truly unforgettable voyage as he and the crew of the Roberts were put to the ultimate test when they found themselves deep in the middle of a minefield. 

I had the pleasure of sitting down with the now Master Chief at a VFW in Portland, Maine to listen to what happened when the Roberts hit an Iranian M08 mine and blew a twenty foot hole in the bottom of the ship. However, the story is less about the mine and more about how 215 shipmates came together in a moment of crisis, fought as a team and survived. 

Over the holiday break, I tried sitting on the other side of the mic. Our super social media guru Molly Nicholson was gracious enough to play host so I may have the opportunity to share more of my story-- call it a "meet the host" episode, if you'd like. Molly and I discuss my background, how the podcast came to be, and plans for 2024. I'm psyched to dive into this year!

Today's episode is dedicated to Maine State Police Detective Benjamin J. Campbell (1987 - 2019). I spoke with Hilary Campbell and we discuss the loss of her late husband. We discuss grief and everything that comes along with it-- the anger, sadness, numbness, exhaustion and pain. However, we also explore the other side of loss and grief: community support, immense gratitude and love. 

ER doctor, marathon runner, mother of five– for Dr. Christine Hein, powering-through and rapid decision making is standard practice in her daily life. But no amount of training ever prepared her for the phone call that would so rapidly uproot her life.

I catch up with friend and former Coastguard shipmate Brian Duffy. Duffy and I became good buddies all those years ago. Back then life wasn't so bad-- driving boats, hanging on the beach, drinking beers. From afar his career and life looked to be moving along just fine. But Brian's story-the one that I knew anyway--wasn't exactly an accurate depiction of what was going on underneath. Here is his story.
