Our guests in The Sustainable Hour on 19 June 2019:
Alex Marshall calls for community support to get Surf Coast Council to vote for a climate emergency declaration on their 25 June meeting. 19-year-old Alex has been driving a petition which got more than 1,000 signatures in just a few weeks. This petition in itself ought to be a strong motivator for Councillor action, she says. If you haven’t signed yet, please do.
Bella Sheridan-Moore from the newly established AYCC Geelong branch, which launches with the event ‘Art can change the climate’ on 21 June. AYCC is now the biggest youth association in Australia.
Jennifer Morrow and Lachie Gordon introduce us to their new book, ‘Walking the Barwon River from Source to Sea’, a book that documents the walk along the length of the Barwon river to the sea and which Jennifer is co-author of. They give a detailed account of the journey and comment on the photographs in the book. The book is available at local outlets and online at Friends of the Barwon.
Lene Foghsgaard investigates how people are using and reusing bags. And we play a radio nostalgia clip from 1958, where the tv show Bell Science Hour brought a clear scientific message to the American public about climate breakdown, already 60 years ago. The message then was just like todays – it lines up with the recent comments by the UN climate change secretariat: “We literally are in a climate emergency.”
We round the hour off with a song by Dub FX – ‘One’.
“For all who walked, the simplicity of walking and talking, sharing knowledge, and appreciating our own backyard and the importance of the Barwon River was a unifying and uplifting experience.”~ Jennifer Morrow, co-author of ‘Barwon River from Source to Sea’
