We terrorize ourselves with fear thoughts. We exaggerate them. We magnify them. We take our fear thoughts to catastrophic "what if" levels which are usually unfounded and irrational, and then we react to the unfounded, irrational catastrophic thoughts with intense anxiety, panic and dread. It's dysfunctional. It's short-sighted. It's self-destructive. Because it causes us to make bad decisions based on fear not facts. In the case of Donald Trump, catastrophic thinking has led people to false conclusions, such as: he's Hitler, he's going to tank the stock market, he's going to end the world, etc. He may prove to be a terrible president were he to be elected. He may prove to do a lot of stuff that upsets many people. But he's not Hitler and he's not the devil incarnate and he's not going to bring Armageddon crashing down upon us. Distorting reality never pays off because it leads to making bad decisions based on false data. Staying grounded in facts is a much better approach.
