Brooklyn Nets finally ended the 9-game losing streak and Bruce Brown had a huge night. He says the locker-room vibe is great now and everybody likes everybody. After defeating the Sacramento Kings 109-85 Brooklyn Nets snapped the losing streak without KD, Kyrie, and Harden. Seth Curry and Andre Drummond were in the starting lineup on their debut night.  Curry went for 23 points, 7 assists, and 5 assists whereas Drummond had 11 points and 9 rebounds. The star of the night however was Bruce Brown with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals, and 3 blocks. In addition to that, he had 0 turnovers in the 37 minutes he clocked in last night.  The rumors about James Harden pushing for a trade have been doing rounds for a long time. That must have led to tension in the locker room for the Brooklyn Nets. Kyrie Irving’s reluctance to get vaccinated and KD’s injury frustrated James Harden. The losing streak was quite likely the final nail in the coffin.

The biggest deal of 2022 happened just hours before the deadline when the Brooklyn Nets agreed to send James Harden to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Ben Simmons, a move that shakes up two major Eastern Conference contenders.  The Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets had trade discussions centered around swapping Russell Westbrook for John Wall, according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, with the deal stalling after the Rockets wanted further compensation. The Lakers also had traction on a three-team deal with the Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks that would have involved trading guard Talen Horton-Tucker, but fell apart because of draft picks that would have needed to be included, sources told ESPN.  Chris Paul was considered damaged goods when he was dealt from Houston to Oklahoma City. All the Point God did with the Thunder was up his value and turn himself into a wanted commodity. Enter Phoenix. They picked up Paul for Kelly Oubre Jr., Ricky Rubio, Jalen Lecque, Ty Jerome and a protected 2022 first-round pick. It worked out pretty well for Phoenix, as Paul led the Suns to the NBA Finals in his first year in the Valley.

One of the biggest criticisms of the modern NBA is that the players are too soft. Because of the change in rules over the last few years, the league has buckled down on the level of physicality that is allowed in the league. Fans have been quite vocal about this over the years. And one picture from the 70s that has gone viral has given new fans even more ammunition against the modern generation.   A recent picture of former NBA champion Gerald Henderson playing with a neck brace on sent NBA fans into a frenzy. The Tweet with the picture highlighted how modern players partake in load management and used this player as an example of how much tougher and physically perseverent NBA players were in the prior era.  NBA fans reacted to this picture, with most of them talking about how tough Gerald and players from his era were. One fan even brought up Calvin Murphy, a hall of fame player who wore a helmet at one point in his career because of a concussion. Some fans did point out that making players' health a priority is actually a good thing, but very few fans agreed with him.  Clearly, NBA fans think that the modern generation of the NBA is not as tough as it used to be. These fans also called Devin Booker 'soft' after his incident recently with the Toronto Raptors mascot, and how he complained to the referee about how he was trying to distract him.  On the other hand, we do need to acknowledge that, as tough as this move from Henderson was, it was a big risk, and could have jeopardized the rest of his career if something had gone wrong. To an extent, we should be happy that players don't have to risk themselves in order to ensure their playing time and pay aren't affected.

Long before Russell Westbrook was benched down the stretch of Wednesday's 111-104 loss to the Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel was given assurances that the organization would support him in taking a hard line while coaching the star, sources told ESPN. Over the past week and a half, Lakers management has told the coaching staff to coach Westbrook as the coaches see fit, even if that means pulling him from a game, as Vogel did for the final 3 minutes, 52 seconds of the fourth quarter against Indiana, sources told ESPN.   One source close to the situation described the message from management to the staff as, "You got to do what you got to do."Westbrook was 5-for-17 from the field when Vogel put in Malik Monk for him with L.A. trailing 101-94. Apart from his offensive struggles, Westbrook failed to execute on the defensive end. The final straw, pushing the staff to honor their instinct to bench him, was when Caris LeVert blew by Westbrook on defense for a layup with 7 minutes, 13 seconds remaining.

Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker came under fire earlier this week when he complained about the Toronto Raptors mascot distracting him while taking a free throw during a game in an empty Scotiabank Arena.  Booker got an official to move the mascot away from underneath the basket. The drama led to fans taking a jab at Booker for not being more like the player he looked up to – the late Kobe Bryant.  Booker addressed the issue.  "I'm really enjoying this, and I always have enjoyed social media," the Suns guard said of the beef with the Raptors mascot and how far it went on social media. "I check it daily, and when they're saying good things about it, I don't get too high, I don't get too low on it.  "The only problem I have is people still comparing me to Kobe Bryant when I told them in the playoffs stop bringing up Mamba mentality. I'm inspired by Kobe Bryant and Mamba mentality, but I am not Kobe Bryant. … And people are out here yelling Mamba mentality from their mama's house. I'll leave you with that."  Booker made the remarks after scoring 35 in the team’s 112-94 win over the Indiana Pacers. Teammate Deandre Ayton added 27 points and 12 rebounds.

In This Episode: Texas principal forced to resign over critical race theory and more  The Black principal of a majority-white Texas high school who has been embroiled in a controversy over critical race theory was forced to resign after months of accusations that he indoctrinated students.  The Grapevine-Colleyville Texas Independent School District board of trustees voted Monday to part ways with the principal, James Whitfield, who was suspended this year at Colleyville Heritage High School in the Fort Worth area.  The school board had voted in September not to renew Whitfield’s contract, NBC Dallas-Forth Worth reported.  “This is beyond me,” he said in an interview Monday with NBC News. “I’m hopeful that we can use this to move forward and to progress and get some true meaningful change and for people to be OK with teaching the truth, people to be OK with embracing inclusivity and diversity, celebrating every student that walks through the doors of our schools."   Whitfield will remain on paid administrative leave until August 2023.  In a joint statement, Whitfield and the school district said they had “mutually agreed to resolve their disputes.”  “Both the District and Dr. Whitfield each strongly believe they are in the right. However, each also agrees that the division in the community about this matter has impacted the education of the District’s students,” the statement read in part. “The District and Dr. Whitfield have mutually agreed to resolve their disputes.”  Parents accused Whitfield of pushing critical race theory, or CRT, which has become a flashpoint for people who say efforts to teach America’s difficult history on race and to make classrooms more comfortable with diversity have become too divisive.

Welcome back to the Channel Of Kool On Youtube.  The NAACP called on members of the NBA, WNBA, NFL, NHL and MLB to consider not signing with teams in Texas as a protest against several controversial laws passed recently in the state.  In the two-page letter given first to ABC News, the NAACP took jabs at state lawmakers, calling the state "a blueprint by legislators to violate constitutional rights for all, especially for women, children and marginalized communities." The NAACP noted the state's controversial laws on abortion, voting rights and mask mandates as reasons for free agents not to sign with Texas teams.

There are nine Texas teams playing the leagues mentioned by the NAACP: the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets; the NHL's Dallas Stars; the WNBA's Dallas Wings; MLB's Texas Rangers and Houston Astros; and the NFL's Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys.  With the NHL, NFL and NBA seasons less than halfway over, the leagues won't welcome free agency until well into 2022. MLB free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series, where the Astros are currently playing.  The letter comes just a few months after MLB took a stand against Georgia's voting overhaul this past baseball season when it moved the All-Star Game out of Atlanta in protest.  The civil rights group is calling on athletes to "seek employment with sports teams located in states that will protect, honor and serve your families with integrity."  The group added, "Until the legislation is overturned, Texas isn't safe for anyone."  What are your thoughts?
