Hyper empathy refers to an above-average level of empathy, which leads individuals to have an intense emotional reaction to the emotions of others. While empathy is generally a positive trait, allowing us to understand and respond to the feelings of others, hyper empathy can sometimes be overwhelming and can lead to emotional burnout. Hyper empathy is often observed in neurodiverse individuals, such as those with Autism, Bipolar Disorder, and OCD (Smith, 2009; Bernhardt et al., 2013).
Signs of Hyper Empathy
1. Feeling overwhelmed in social situations.
2. Difficulty distinguishing one's own emotions from the emotions of others.
3. Emotional burnout or exhaustion due to constant empathy.
4. Becoming overly involved or distressed by the problems of others.
Managing Hyper Empathy
1. Set boundaries: It's important to know when to distance oneself emotionally from others to avoid emotional burnout.
2. Self-Care: Prioritize self-care and remember that it's okay to put your own needs first.
3. Practice mindfulness: This can help individuals stay grounded in their own experiences and prevent them from becoming too absorbed in the emotions of others.
4. Seek support: If hyper empathy is causing distress, consider seeking support from a mental health professional.
