Canada has been flirting with the idea of a guaranteed basic income for decades - but our most recent flirtation has now come to an end. For the last year, 4,000 people in Ontario have been receiving a basic income cheque from the provincial government - up to $17,000 a year. It’s part of a pilot project to study how effective it could be at reducing poverty and poverty-related costs. But today, the Doug Ford government axed the study, as part of a larger promise to revamp social assistance programs over the next 100 days.
