Expect a mild and muggy start to yield to another quite warm day as highs top out in the mid-90s in the afternoon with heat indices pushing 100-101° for a time. A thunderstorm or two can’t be ruled out, but much of us look to stay rain-free.

NHC is watching an area in the Atlantic for possible tropical development with a wave that’s approaching the southeast US for the weekend. Right now, there’s nothing too much to worry about here, but we’ll watch it.

The oppressive ridge of high pressure that drove temperatures into the danger zone repeatedly this past week is a thing of the past, replaced by a trough digging in from the north. Highs top out in the low 90s with heat indices around 100° each afternoon before thunderstorms develop.

An area in the tropics also has a 70% chance of development in the next seven days as it moves westward toward the Lesser Antilles. No imminent threat to the Lowcountry, but it’s worth watching.

Friday will see temperatures soaring back into the upper 90s one more time before the subtropical ridge loses influence across the area, sending highs a little lower for Saturday and Sunday. Heat indices approaching 110° will be possible Friday, and another heat advisory might be needed. We could also see another thunderstorm complex, but guidance suggests it misses us to the south and west. (Wait and see.)

Scattered afternoon storms persist into the weekend, but nothing that indicates a total washout by any stretch.

Thursday will once again feature heat indices approaching 110° in the Charleston metro area before a disturbance ripples by, which is expected to instigate some showers and thunderstorms. A few of those storms could be severe with gusty winds and large hail.

The heat wave peaks on Friday with air temperatures in the upper 90s and heat indices returning to 110°+ before scattered storms in the afternoon. As we get into the weekend, a trough digging in to our north makes the weather a bit more unsettled, but also a bit “cooler” as highs “only” top out around 90 by Sunday.
