Are you an introvert that gets confused as an extrovert or ambivert?
You might be a social introvert!
I’ll briefly go through each type of introvert, but spend most of the time talking through social introversion. I’ll look into the differences between a social introvert and ambivert, and I’ll end with some insight into how to use your social introversion as a speaker and what it might say about you as speaker in general if you do identify as one.

Today I’m talking about how you can start getting paid to speak.
I share the first time I ever got paid to speak and what that process was like, how much you can expect to be getting paid even as a beginner, and what things should be included in your speaker portfolio to ensure you’re ready to go when opportunity comes knocking.
Note: I mention my upcoming workshop Build Your Public Speaking Toolkit happening on Wednesday, January 17th from 6-7pm Pacific Time. If you'd like to attend, head over to chatswithyvonne.com to learn more and register.
In today’s episode I reflect on something that I have gone back and forth on for many years. Do I need to say that I am Latina?
I’m going to share some key moments in my life that have shaped my ever changing, often contradicting perspective on this as well as some thought leadership in this topic of identity from literature that I think discusses it really well.

The goal of this podcast is for us to reflect on our lived experiences and use them to form the foundation for how we show up as speakers. In today’s episode, I’m doing a look back on 2023, the lessons I’ve learned (and in some cases still learning) that have shaped me into the current version of myself as a Public Speaker.
And, because our comfortability with public speaking is mostly in our practice of the art, I’ll outline some of the practices I want to bring with me into the new year. I hope that my reflection will prompt you to also reflect and find the connections between your lived experiences and the art of public speaking. And better yet, be inspired to also share it.

In today’s episode titled: Changing what academia looks, feels, and sounds like. We’re talking with Jennifer Cabrera about how she’s doing just that with her platform Academic Latina. We’ll hear about her upbringing, how her sense of community started at home, and we’ll get a behind the scenes into one of her recent speaking engagements.
Jennifer Cabrera is a first-generation Latina and proud daughter of immigrants from Sinaloa, Mexico. She is currently enrolled in a Sociology PhD program where she is pursuing her doctorate degree with an emphasis in Chicano/Latino Studies. As a researcher she studies the supportive social relationships and academic achievement of Latinas in doctoral programs. To increase the number of Latinas with doctorates, Jennifer founded Academic Latina - a social media platform that supports Latinas in higher education. Since launching Academic Latina in 2020, her authenticity has been reflected through her inclusive support and guidance to over 30,000 Latinas virtually (Instagram, TikTok, Twitter) and in-person through one-on-one mentorship, academic coaching, and scholarship opportunities. In addition to the free and low-cost resources, she is a dedicated first-generation faculty leading a course at the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) that guides underrepresented students to prepare and submit competitive graduate school applications. Jennifer is a bold and passionate change maker committed to uplifting the Latinx community through education.

This episode is part 2 of my conversation with Abby Benedetto, Educational Consultant and Founder of Core Shifts. https://core-shifts.com/ We chat public speaking, anti-racism in the classroom, and how she is changing the education game.
Abby Benedetto has taken on designing and changing systems for the last two decades from a wide variety of roles and perspectives - honing her skills around deep listening, collaborative innovation, and equity-centered learning design, and driven by the purpose of working to ensure that ALL young people (and adults) have access to the type of deeper learning they deserve so that they feel seen and valued, and develop the skills that they need to go out into the world and thrive. As 2020 unfolded and the world was newly turned upside down because of covid, the persistent and inexcusable murders of unarmed Black men and women, forest fires raging around us, and clear threats to our democracy, Abby found herself heavy with so many questions of "what am I doing? what can I do?" Those questions led her to some new lenses of purpose and focus, specifically around supporting other white-identified folks to build an anti-racist practice, and develop tools to reduce the hold that white supremacy culture has on our system of public education.
