This week we take a side road from our usual therapeutic conversation road trip to discuss how the program we run is funded. Please take a listen to learn how we pay the bills...all the bills!

TRL will talk about the Special Diabetes Program and its sister program, the Special Diabetes Program for Indians, operated by the Indian Health Service and funded through mandatory Congressional budget approvals.

The SDP/I has been around since President Bill Clinton signed it into existence in 1997 during the 105th Congress. The biggest change occurred in 2004. Since then it has been pretty static despite the increases in costs to operate an effective program and best serve our populations. The 116th Congress, in 2020 did vote to increase the re-funding process to three years from 2, although the sponsoring legislators requested 5 years and they voted against an increase in funding to $200M from the 2004 amount of $150M.

Please take a few minutes to contact your elected Senators and House of Representatives to ask them to support the SDP/I funding, increase in period and an increase in the amount they will fund each year.  You can find your elected officials contact information here: Find Your Representative or your Senator: Find Your Senator
