  • Cult of the Lamb from the Perspective of Jesus | Nerdy Sermon

Yep - you read that title right. We’re going to talk about it. I have to be honest that this whole topic makes me crazy uncomfortable, but I couldn’t help myself. I mean, if you want me to play your rogue-lite cult simulator game, then you better make it with adorable art and a ding-a-dang farming sim structure.

Y’all know I’m a sucker for that Stardew Valley style of gaming. I had to dive into this game.

And what I found when I started playing Cult of the Lamb was a brutally fair depiction of cult behavior. It’s hilarious. It’s disturbing. It’s adorable. And it’s brutal. And I loved every second of it. But can Cult of the Lamb teach us anything as Christians? Can it do anything other than just make us question our own indoctrination? I think it’s a great way to understand what sets the Lamb of God apart from this leel lamb. So let’s talk about it.

Welcome to Checkpoint Church - where nerds, geeks, and gamers come together to talk about faith, games, and if it’s good enough for Hideo Kojima, it’s good enough for me. I’m your Nerd Pastor Nate. If you like these weekly deep-dives, be sure to sub and hit that bell to find out when our next one drops.

  • Why Chisato is the PERFECT Mentor for Takina in Lycoris Recoil | Nerdy Sermon [No Spoilers]

If I’m honest, I wouldn’t have started Lycoris Recoil without Hideo Kojima tweeting about it. But hoo boy, am I glad that I did! If I hadn’t taken that first step into the world of the Lycoris, I would have missed out on perhaps some of the best spy world-building of this anime season. Plus, it’s essentially John Wick, but cute.

Not to mention Chisato’s ability to singlehandedly takedown Goku, more than likely. She’s kind of my hero right now. But more than anything, this anime presents us with one of my favorite stories - balance. Takina and Chisato are opposites, or are they? Let’s talk about it.

Welcome to Checkpoint Church - where nerds, geeks, and gamers come together to talk about faith, games, and if it’s good enough for Hideo Kojima, it’s good enough for me. • The Warning Behind Jordan Peele's Spectacle in NOPE | Nerdy Sermon

Upon watching Jordan Peele’s summer monster movie Nope, I was… unhappy. After obsessing over Get Out and enjoying Us for years, I had high expectations for this movie to… *mean* something. But when I rolled credits on it, I felt like I had watched a summer monster movie.

Where was the scathing critique on race, government, capitalism, or whiteness? It wasn’t there. All I could think about was the haunting first five minutes of the film over and over.

And so, I took to studying; I’ve written about five different nerdy sermons on this movie. One was about flipping the optics from the watched to the watchers; the other was about owning a historical inclusion and manipulation of racial relationships and the actual presentation of the monster itself.

But, in the end, I’ve scrapped all of them. And come back to this: Jordan Peele stated from the beginning that this film was supposed to be a spectacle. And it was. The word that comes to mind for this nerdy pastor when I consider the spectacle is: miracle. Maybe it’s a bad miracle like OJ mentions in the film, but maybe not. Let’s talk about it.
