If you’re seeing this, it’s because I’m now a Dad of 2! And that means I’m already sleep deprived to the point that you wouldn’t want to see me right now - so we’re taking some old blogs from back at the very beginning of Checkpoint before these nerdy sermons even existed. We’re remastering them and making them for you to enjoy probably for the first time - since those blogs have been read like, 8 times. All this is to say that, if these feel different than normal, it’s because they are. But I’m excited to offer them to you anyway!

Today’s is from Violet Evergarden, which is a show that you really need to watch, if you’re still sleeping on it. Maybe wait until you’re ready for a good cry, but then get ready for an excellent and emotional story. Violet Evergarden is a show that I’ve actually recommended to many of the pastors in my field because I think it’s probably the best possible presentation of pastoral care that exists - which we’ll talk about in this video. But more than that, Violet Evergarden does an incredible job of exploring the action after the action. How do we cope with the things that happen after the action movie rolls credits? And what can we learn about as people who live in the day-to-day life of humanity? Let’s talk about it.

Today’s is from Fullmetal Alchemist - one of my favorite anime of all time and the one that got me into anime to begin with. One of my favorite characters in that show - although most of the characters in FMA fit that description - anyway I love Alex Louis Armstrong. And I had to write about how Alex exemplifies one of the things that the church doesn’t like to highlight so much - tradition.

So Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came out and is doing ridiculously well, which makes me crazy happy for the character that shaped my childhood: Tails. Yeah, I was always a Tails fan and still am. So when I learned Tails would be featuring in the film, I was ecstatic. And then we learned that Idris Elba was going to be bringing together another huge Sonic mainstay - Knuckles the Echidna. This movie was destined to be one of my favorites of the year - no matter how dodgy the writing would be. 

One of the best parts of this series of movies is how true to the source material they seem to be staying. Video game movies are notorious for making random and unprecedented changes needlessly to the franchise to differentiate themselves - like IDK Master Chief charging into battle without his helmet on or something. But no one would do that right? 

Given that, this movie was going to for sure follow Knuckles being the initial antagonist of the film. He was just going to be manipulated by Dr. Robotnik, as he always is - whether it’s the show, the games, or even Sonic 3. Knuckles is always kind of a doofus that gets tricked. And, while I’d love to claim my own intellect superior, odds are I’m pretty used to getting tricked myself and maybe you are too. In this video, we’re gonna take a look at how Knuckles always gets duped and what we can do as Christians to stop it from happening to us. Let’s talk about it.

Look - if you get to know me through our streams or the #anime channel on our Discord, it won’t take long to learn that I’m not the biggest Shonen fan. I grew up on the likes of DBZ, Bleach, One Piece, and Naruto and I’ve just read and watched too many of them at this point. Demon Slayer is one that continues to put me on the fence. With perhaps the most boring first season I’ve ever experienced, Demon Slayer has considerably upped the pace for season 2 and the transitional arc of Mugen Train. The latter of which we’ll be tackling in this video.

Ace - I mean, Kyojuro Rengoku is a fascinating character and is definitely more than just a big brother character. The spoilers that happen during the Mugen Train film and series tell a familiar story to some of the concepts of sacrifice that Jesus presented during his ministry on earth. So for this one - let’s take a look at the flame hashira and see if he can teach us about more than tasty food. Let’s talk about it.
