And How My Dress-Up Darling Proves Christians Can (and Should) Like Anime
I'll take 'Things I Never Expected My Pastor To Talk About" for 500, Alex.
Look, okay, I know how this looks. I try to keep my embarrassing guilty pleasures to myself. I am a sucker for the anime romance genre. Between confessing to my love for dating sims two weeks ago to defaming King Solomon at the beginning of this season - I’m really just holding on for dear life at this point.
But it didn’t take long into the first episode My Dress-Up Darling to realize that this show is doing something different. Not everything - it certainly has its cringier moments and earns it’s rating, but the story being told in this new anime isn’t the same-old, same-old story. So far, it’s not even a love story. It’s a story about passion and drive and equality. In this way, the show is breaking down it’s own expected stereotypes from the anime community.
Not only that - but by breaking down these expectations, this show answers the age-old question of whether or not Christians can play video games, watch anime, or do cosplay. Let’s talk about it.

Looking at Ranking of Kings - I couldn’t help but keep putting off watching this show. I thought it was going to be some kind of childlike fantasy story that wouldn’t keep me hooked. What I got instead was Studio Ghibli presents’ Game of Thrones. This story is packed to brim with betrayal, political intrigue, and some horribly complex characters. And I love it.
But above everything about this show, one thing is the most clear: I would die for Bojji. The central character of the series is this leel guy and I love him as if he were my own child. Not only do I just love the way the animators have presented him as a character - I think I love Bojji because he reminds me a lot of the ideal follower of Jesus that Paul talked about over and over again. Yes, I’m serious. No, I will not apologize for making this comparison. Bojji is a better Jesus follower than I could ever be - let’s talk about it.

If you’re anything like me, then you’ve logged way too many hours already into the world of Pokémon Legends Arceus. I may or may not have spent like thirty hours in the game before beating the second frenzied lord. I’m not even gonna deny it - I’m obsessed.
But there’s something different about this Pokémon game. Game Freak has always been pretty good about hiding bits and pieces of Poké-lore into the background of the games and the bookshelves, but with this jaunt into history - we’re literally experiencing the lore that Pokémon is built upon. And it’s brought with it this seriously heavy religious strife between the Pearl and Diamond clans. So what’s going on there? Can we as Christians learn from the feud going on between these two factions? Or could they learn from us? Let’s talk about it.

I gotta be real with you folks - I really didn’t want to like this show. And I’m still not totally sure that I do. But for some Mushoku Tensei was the #1 anime of 2021. And so I had to watch it to find out why. I’m not convinced that it’s the best anime of 2021 yet, but it does tell an interesting enough story and present some pretty fascinating themes that aren’t super typical for the Isekai genre.
While I would’ve preferred ever more subverted expectations, the expectations it does subvert are actually pretty important to one of the biggest problems plaguing Christianity today. How could this lecherous anime have anything to do with that? Let’s talk about it.

What better way to kick off the new season than with everyone’s favorite web-slinger Spider-man? Spider-Man: No Way Home hit theaters at the end of 2021 and is still holding strong in the cultural zeitgeist today. Except we apparently all just agreed that the spoiler warning thing didn’t exist, I guess? I’ve seen more exposé articles from reputable news sources than I would have expected.
But that’s not our goal for today - we want to touch on the why behind the what. Most importantly, we want to answer the question that Spidey is faced with… just how much power comes with how much responsibility? Should we really have to sacrifice everything? Let’s talk about it.
